Data from: Stable isotope labeled n-alkanes to assess digesta passage kinetics through the digestive tract of ruminants
We describe the use of carbon stable isotope (13C) labeled n-alkanes as a potential internal tracer to assess passage kinetics of ingested nutrients in ruminants. Plant cuticular n-alkanes originating from intrinsically 13C labeled ryegrass plants were pulse dosed intraruminally in four rumen-cannulated lactating dairy cows receiving four contrasting ryegrass silage treatments that differed in nitrogen fertilization level (45 or 90 kg nitrogen ha−1) and maturity (early or late). Passage kinetics through the gastrointestinal tract were derived from the δ13C (i.e. the ratio 13C:12C) in apparently undigested fecal material. Isotopic enrichment was observed in a wide range of long-chain n-alkanes (C27–C36) and passage kinetics were determined for the most abundant C29, C31 and C33 n-alkanes, for which a sufficiently high response signal was detected by combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Basal diet treatment and carbon chain length of n-alkanes did not affect fractional passage rates from the rumen (K1) among individual n-alkanes (3.71–3.95%/h). Peak concentration time and transit time showed a quantitatively small, significant (p≤0.002) increase with carbon chain length. K1 estimates were comparable to those of the 13C labeled digestible dry matter fraction (3.38%/h; r = 0.61 to 0.71; p≤0.012). A literature review has shown that n-alkanes are not fermented by microorganisms in the rumen and affirms no preferential depletion of 13C versus 12C. Our results suggest that 13C labeled n-alkanes can be used as nutrient passage tracers and support the reliability of the δ13C signature of digestible feed nutrients as a tool to measure nutrient-specific passage kinetics.
Data from: Starvation effects on nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes of animals: an insight from meta-analysis of fasting experiments
Nitrogen and carbon stable isotopic compositions (δ15N and δ13C) of consumers have been used for physiological and food web studies. Previous studies have shown δ15N and δ13C values are affected by several biological and environmental factors during starvation, but the generality of the effect of starvation on δ15N and δ13C values has not yet been tested. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of starvation on δ15N and δ13C values of consumers, and the underlying factors that may explain the observed variation. The δ15N and δ13C values were calculated as the differences between the final δ15N and δ13C values of consumers (post-starvation) and the pre-starvation values on each experiment. Our meta-analysis showed a large variation in the δ15N and δ13C values of consumers (δ15N range: –0.82 to 4.30‰; mean: 0.47‰ and δ13C range: –1.92 to 2.62‰; mean: 0.01‰). The δ15N values of most consumers increased along the length of the starvation period and were influenced by nitrogen excretion and thermoregulation types, probably because differences in nitrogen metabolism and thermoregulation affect nitrogen processing and excretion rates. None of our predictor variables accounted for the variation in δ13C values, which showed both increases and decreases due to fasting. Our findings suggest that starvation results in changes in consumer δ15N values which are mainly explained by the length of the fasting period and by nitrogen and energy metabolism, but the underlying mechanisms of the starvation effects on δ13C values seem to be more complex than previously thought.
Dietary availability determines metabolic conversion of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in spiders: a dual compound-specific stable isotope approach
<p>The following dataset contains fatty acid contents (in mg.g<sup>-1</sup> and in %), stable isotopes (‰), and compound specific isotopic analyses of carbon and hydrogen (‰) data for insects (terrestrial and semi-aquatic) and spiders collected around Lake Lunz (47°85'N, 15°05'E), Austria from June to September 2020. Measurements were done after storage at -80°C for 2 hours, and freeze drying (24h), followed by taxonomic identification. Spatial variability of stable isotopes in river water over the Tibetan Plateau
<p>Stable isotopes dataset for the manuscript "Spatial variability of stable isotopes in river water over the Tibetan Plateau". </p> <p>This dataset includes 437 new available isotopic data of river water firstly sampled from May 2013 to July 2016 covering eight great river basins over the TP, including the Upper Ganges, Upper Brahmaputra, Upper Mekong, Upper Salween, Upper Indus, Upper Yangtze, Upper Yellow, and the Endorheic Rivers. River water isotopic date from twelve previous studies are also complied, including 1178 samples with both δ<sup>18</sup>O and δD values, 231 with only δ<sup>18</sup>O values and 6 with only δD values. All data used in this study are accompanied by geographical information.</p>
