Downscaling mutualistic networks from species to individuals reveals consistent interaction niches and roles within plant populations.

<p>Repository containing dataset and code for the manuscript entitled&nbsp;<em>Downscaling mutualistic networks from species to individuals reveals consistent interaction niches and roles within plant populations</em>.</p> <p>For this study, we compiled 46 empirical individual-based networks on plant-animal seed dispersal mutualism, encompassing 1037 plant individuals across 29 species from various regions. We compare the structure of individual-based networks to that of species-based networks and by extending the niche concept to interaction assemblages, we explore levels of individual plant specialization. We examine how individual variation influences network structure and how plant individuals "explore" the interaction niche of the population.</p> <p>Please refer to <strong>makefile.R</strong> for project outline, explanation and codes used, and to the <strong>README</strong> in networks folder for data structure and compilation.</p>

Habitat quality drives the species-area relationship of plants and soil microbes in an ocean archipelago

<p>While the positive species-area relationship on islands is frequently observed, the mechanisms underlying this pattern remain poorly studied. By analyzing insular community diversity across spatial scales and the soil properties within the islands, we were able to explore potential mechanisms leading to the island species-area relationship of plants, as well as associated soil bacteria and fungi, from a tropical archipelago.<strong> </strong>We found that both plant and soil microbial communities showed similar positive species-area relationships across scales and the greater taxonomic diversity on larger islands was mainly driven by the higher richness within samples. These patterns arose primarily due to shifting habitat quality with island area, rather than spatial processes generally attributed to species-area relationships. Specifically, for plants, changes in soil total phosphorus content with island area were most explanatory, while changes in soil pH appeared to play the most important role in shaping soil bacteria and fungi patterns. By contrast, we found little evidence for the role of spatial processes (i.e., dispersal limitation or soil heterogeneity) within the island.<strong> </strong>Overall, this study highlights the importance of dissecting potential mechanisms underlying multi-trophic community dynamics to explain patterns of biodiversity and its variation on islands.</p>

Plant trait matrix for fire-prone Mediterranean chronosequences

<p>A database of 23 traits for 117 Mediterranean plant species. It includes three groups of traits: i) four whole-plant traits (bud height, sclerophylly, xerophily and resprouting ability), ii) ten above-ground traits (plant height, flowering time and span, leaf size, area, weight, thickness, specific leaf area, seed size and dispersal distance), and iii) nine below-ground traits (root length, depth, laterality, root depth:laterality ratio, root weight, specific root length, root C and N concentration and the root CN ratio).</p>

Data from: Canopy cover and soil moisture influence forest understory plant responses to experimental summer drought

<p>Extreme droughts are globally increasing in frequency and severity. Most research on drought in forests focuses on the response of trees, while less is known about the impacts of drought on forest understory species and how these effects are moderated by the local environment.</p> <p>We assessed the impacts of a 45-day experimental summer drought on the performance of six boreal forest understory plants, using a transplant experiment with rainout shelters replicated across 25 sites. We recorded growth, vitality and reproduction immediately, two months, and one year after the simulated drought, and examined how differences in ambient soil moisture and canopy cover among sites influenced the effects of drought on the performance of each species.</p> <p>Drought negatively affected the growth and/or vitality of all species, but the effects were stronger and more persistent in the bryophytes than in the vascular plants. The two species associated with older forests, the moss <em>Hylocomiastrum umbratum</em> and the orchid <em>Goodyera repens</em>, suffered larger effects than the more generalist species included in the experiment. The drought reduced reproductive output in the moss <em>Hylocomium splendens </em>in the next growing season, but increased reproduction in the graminoid <em>Luzula pilosa</em>. Higher ambient soil moisture reduced some negative effects of drought on vascular plants. Both denser canopy cover and higher soil moisture alleviated drought effects on bryophytes, likely through alleviating cellular damage.</p> <p>Our experiment shows that boreal understory species can be adversely affected by drought and that effects might be stronger for bryophytes and species associated with older forests. Our results indicate that the effects of drought can vary over small spatial scales and that forest landscapes can be actively managed to alleviate drought effects on boreal forest biodiversity. For example, by managing the tree canopy and protecting hydrological networks.</p>
