Comparing plasma and skin imprint metabolic profiles in COVID-19 diagnosis and severity assessment_dataset

<p>As SARS-CoV-2 continues to produce new variants, the demand for diagnostics and a better understanding of COVID-19 remain key topics in healthcare. Skin manifestations have been widely reported in cases of COVID-19, but the mechanisms and markers of these symptoms are poorly described. In this cross-sectional study, 101 patients (64 COVID-19 positive patients and 37 controls) were enrolled between April and June 2020, during the first wave of COVID-19, in São Paulo, Brazil. Enrolled patients had skin imprints sampled non-invasively using silica plates; plasma samples were also collected. Samples were used for untargeted lipidomics/metabolomics through high-resolution mass spectrometry. We identified 558 molecular ions, with lipids comprising most of them. We found 245 plasma ions that were significant for COVID-19 diagnosis, compared to 61 from the skin imprints. Plasma samples outperformed skin imprints in distinguishing patients with COVID-19 from controls, with F1-scores of 91.9% and 84.3%, respectively. Skin imprints were excellent for assessing disease severity, exhibiting an F1-score of 93.5% when discriminating between patient hospitalization and home care statuses. Specifically, oleamide and linoleamide were the most discriminative biomarkers for identifying hospitalized patients through skin imprinting, and palmitic amides and N-acylethanolamine 18:0 were also identified as significant biomarkers. These observations underscore the importance of primary fatty acid amides and N-acylethanolamines in immunomodulatory processes and metabolic disorders. These findings confirm the potential utility of skin imprinting as a valuable non-invasive sampling method for COVID-19 screening; a method that may also be applied in the evaluation of other medical conditions.</p><p>Journal of Molecular Medicine https://doi.org/10.1007/s00109-023-02396-3</p>

HEartS Professional Survey: Charting the effects of COVID-19 on working patterns, income, and wellbeing among performing arts professionals in the United Kingdom (April-May 2021)

<p>These data were collected using the <em>HEartS Professional Survey II</em> from performing arts workers in the United Kingdom in April–May 2021. <em>HEartS Professional II </em>is an adaptation of the <em>HEartS Professional I</em> survey which was used in April–June 2020 (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.s7h44j14z">https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.s7h44j14z</a>). Both surveys were designed as multi-strategy data collection tools with two main purposes: (1) to chart working patterns, income, sources of support, and indicators of mental and social well-being in order to identify trends in the effects of the lockdown at the time and (2) to explore the individual work and wellbeing experiences of performing arts professionals in their own words, in order to identify the subjective effects of lockdown in terms of challenges and opportunities. Questionnaire and Data of Neck Pain and Distance learning among university Students During COVID-19

<p>&nbsp;The shift to online learning during COVID-19 led to increased musculoskeletal discomforts and impacted students' quality of life. Neck pain, once a minor issue, has become more prevalent due to prolonged electronic device use in new learning methods. This study aims to measure the prevalence of neck pain among University of Sharjah (UOS) students during the COVID-19 online learning period and to investigate the factors that provoked it.</p><p>&nbsp;This cross-sectional study used an online survey distributed to UOS students via social media from February 16 to March 12, 2021. Demographic data, Neck Disability Index (NDI) assessments, and pain management information were gathered and analyzed using SPSS 24 through univariate and bivariate methods.</p><p>The prevalence of neck pain during COVID-19, among 325 UOS students was found to be 62.7%, 64.41% of which had neck pain at the time of doing the survey. The mean NDI percentage point was 19.19%. The most common location of pain was the back of the neck 38.77%). Participants reported prolonged sitting (81.23%) while leaning forward as the most prevalent cause of their neck pain. Bivariate analysis showed that the most significant factors affecting the NDI were lifting, personal care, headaches, concentration, sleeping, recreational activities, reading, anxiousness, depression, and work. Moreover, subjects who did not seek medical attention treatment had significantly higher NDI scores as compared to those who did (83.89 vs 125.80, p=0.002).</p><p>By determining the prevalence of neck pain among UOS students, this research can attract attention to the importance of postural changes and time spent in e-learning on neck pain, and the gaps of previously published articles can be filled. Future studies about neck pain and additional preventative measures should be catalyzed in the UAE.</p>

Prevalence and characteristics of long COVID-19 in Jordan: A cross sectional survey

<p>Early in the pandemic, the spread of the emerging virus SARS-CoV-2 was causing mild illness lasting less than two weeks for most people, with a small proportion of people developing serious illness or death. However, as the pandemic progressed, many people reported suffering from symptoms for weeks or months after their initial infection. Persistence of COVID-19 symptoms beyond one month, or what is known as long COVID-19, is recognized as a risk of acute infection. Up to date, information on long COVID-19 among Jordanian patients has not been reported. Therefore, we sought to conduct this cross-sectional study utilizing a self-administered survey. The survey asks a series of questions regarding participant demographics, long COVID-19 symptoms, information about pre-existing medical history, supplements, vaccination history, and symptoms recorded after vaccination.  Chi square analysis was conducted on 990 responders, and the results showed a significant correlation (P&lt;0.05) between long COVID-19 syndrome and age, obesity, chronic illness, vitamin D intake, number of times infected by COVID-19, number of COVID-19 symptoms and whether the infection was pre or post vaccination. The long-term symptoms most enriched in those with long COVID-19 were tinnitus (73.4%), concentration problems (68.6%) and muscle and joint ache (68.3%). A binomial logistic regression analysis was done to explore the predictors of long COVID-19 and found that age 18-45, marital status, vitamin D, number of COVID-19 symptoms and signs after vaccination are positive predictors of long COVID-19, while zinc intake is a negative predictor. Although further studies on long-term persistence of symptoms are needed, the present study provides a baseline that allows us to understand the frequency and nature of long COVID-19 among Jordanians.</p>

Profiling of linear B-cell epitopes against human coronaviruses in pooled sera sampled early in the COVID-19 pandemic

<p>Background: Antibodies play a key role in the immune defence against infectious pathogens. Understanding the underlying process of B cell recognition is not only of fundamental interest; it supports important applications within diagnostics and therapeutics. Whereas the nature of conformational B cell epitope recognition is inherently complicated, linear B cell epitopes offer a straightforward approach that potentially can be reduced to one of peptide recognition.</p> <p>Methods: Using an overlapping peptide approach representing the entire proteomes of the seven main coronaviruses known to infect humans, we analysed sera pooled from eight PCR-confirmed COVID-19 convalescents and eight pre-pandemic controls. Using a high-density peptide microarray platform, 13-mer peptides overlapping by 11 amino acids were in situ synthesised and incubated with the pooled primary serum samples, followed by development with secondary fluorochrome-labelled anti-IgG and -IgA antibodies. Interactions were detected by fluorescence detection. Strong Ig interactions encompassing consecutive peptides were considered to represent "high-fidelity regions" (HFRs). These were mapped to the coronavirus proteomes using a 60% homology threshold for clustering.</p> <p>Results: We identified 333 human coronavirus derived HFRs. Among these, 98 (29%) mapped to SARS-CoV-2, 144 (44%) mapped to one or more of the four circulating common cold coronaviruses (CCC), and 54 (16%) cross-mapped to both SARS-CoV-2 and CCCs. The remaining 37 (11%) mapped to either SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV. Notably, the COVID-19 serum was skewed towards recognising SARS-CoV-2-mapped HFRs, whereas the pre-pandemic was skewed towards recognising CCC-mapped HFRs. In terms of absolute numbers of linear B cell epitopes, the primary targets are the ORF1ab protein (60%), the spike protein (21%), and the nucleoprotein (15%) in that order; however, in terms of epitope density, the order would be reversed.</p> <p>Conclusion: We identified linear B cell epitopes across coronaviruses, highlighting pan-, alpha-, beta-, or SARS-CoV-2-corona-specific B cell recognition patterns. These findings could be pivotal in deciphering past and current exposures to epidemic and endemic coronavirus. Moreover, our results suggest that pre-pandemic anti-CCC antibodies may cross-react against SARS-CoV-2, which could explain the highly variable outcome of COVID-19. Finally, the methodology used here offers a rapid and comprehensive approach to high-resolution linear B-cell epitope mapping, which could be vital for future studies of emerging infectious diseases.</p>

<p>The survey questionnaire and the interview guidelines have been designed in the framework of the EU H2020 projects SENTINEL to study the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the stakeholder engagement processes in susatinability research in the longterm. We conducted interviews with researchers and engaged stakeholders, using a semi-structured interview guideline. Urban wild meat consumption across southern forested Cameroon and the limited effect of COVID-19 on wild meat consumption patterns

<p>Overexploitation of wildlife is pervasive in many tropical regions, and in addition to being a significant conservation and sustainability concern, it has received global attention given discussions over the origins of zoonotic disease outbreaks. Where unsustainable, consumption of wild meat by urban residents has been identified as a major socio-environmental challenge, given it is a significant driver of wildlife declines. Yet, information on urban wild meat consumers and possible ways to target conservation interventions remains lacking. Using one of the largest datasets of urban wild meat consumers (1,391) collected through structured questionnaires in 20 towns and cities, we model the demographic, psychographic, and spatial factors associated with wild meat consumption patterns in Cameroon. We find that nearly half of the sampled consumers ate wild meat once per week or more, and find that the probability of being a frequent consumer was greater among men, those living in smaller towns, and those who do not consider there to be a link between eating wild meat and disease. Threatened pangolin species are highly preferred among urban consumers, and most consumers do not consider there to be a link between COVID-19 and pangolins. Most respondents had eaten wild meat since the beginning of COVID-19 and had not reduced their wild meat consumption due to COVID-19. For the first time, we show that consumers with beliefs against a link between wild meat consumption and disease and those with greater income were less likely to have decreased their wild meat consumption. We identified stakeholders including teachers and religious/community leaders as potentially appropriate messengers for demand-reduction campaigns, with television and radio being the most trusted communication channels among wild meat consumers. Crucially, our study advances the current scientific understanding of the factors that influence wild meat consumption frequency and change due to COVID-19 by urban consumers (particularly health beliefs and settlement size). We discuss how our results could be used to inform the design of wild meat demand-reduction interventions to bring the consumption of wild meat towards sustainability in Cameroon, and how our approach is applied pan-tropically.</p>

Processed data for the analysis of human mobility changes from COVID-19 lockdown on bird occupancy in North Carolina, USA

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown worldwide provided a unique research opportunity for ecologists to investigate the human-wildlife relationship under abrupt changes in human mobility, also known as Anthropause. Here we chose 15 common non-migratory bird species with different levels of synanthrope and we aimed to compare how human mobility changes could influence the occupancy of fully synanthropic species such as House Sparrow (<em>Passer domesticus</em>) versus casual to tangential synanthropic species such as White-breasted Nuthatch (<em>Sitta carolinensis</em>). We extracted data from the eBird citizen science project during three study periods in the spring and summer of 2020 when human mobility changed unevenly across different counties in North Carolina. We used the COVID-19 Community Mobility reports from Google to examine how community mobility changes towards workplaces, an indicator of overall human movements at the county level, could influence bird occupancy.</p>

COVID-19 vaccine uptake data set

<p>The novel Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) caused devastating effects globally, and healthcare workers were among the most affected by the pandemic. Despite healthcare workers being prioritized in COVID-19 vaccination globally and in Ghana, hesitancy to receive the vaccines resulted in delayed control of the pandemic. In Ghana, healthcare workers had a vaccine acceptance of 39.3% before the vaccine rollout. Consequently, this study assessed the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination and associated factors among healthcare workers in Ghana in the post-vaccine roll-out period. This was an analytical cross-sectional study that used a semi-structured questionnaire to collect data on COVID-19 vaccination uptake and influencing factors. 256 healthcare workers were selected in Ayawaso West Municipality of Ghana using a stratified random sampling approach. Descriptive statistics were used to examine socio-demographic factors and Likert scale responses. Bivariable and Multivariable logistic regression were performed using IBM SPSS version 22 to identify predictors of vaccine uptake and a statistical significance was declared at p&lt;0.05. More than three-fourths of participants 220 (85.9%) had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, while 36 (14.9%) were hesitant. More than half 139 (54.3%) had adequate knowledge about COVID-19 vaccination and the majority 188 (73.4%) had positive perceptions about its effectiveness. Moreover, 218 (85.2%) of HCWs had a positive attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination. Positive attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination (AOR = 4.3; 95% CI: 1.4, 13.0) and high cues to action (AOR = 5.7; 95% CI: 2.2, 14.8) were the factors that significantly predicted uptake of COVID-19 vaccination among healthcare workers. COVID-19 vaccination among HCWs in Ghana is promising. However, hesitancy to receive the vaccination among a significant proportion of HCWs raises concerns. To ensure vaccination of all healthcare workers, interventions to promote vaccination should target key determinants of vaccination uptake, such as attitude towards the vaccination and cues to action.</p>
