Towards automated early detection of risks for a CO2 plume containment from permanent seismic monitoring data
<p>This storage contains the training data for neural networks proposed in a manuscript 'Towards automated early detection of risks for a CO2 plume containment from permanent seismic monitoring data'. The data consists of output from reservoir simulations of a small-scale CO2 injection at CO2CRC Otway Project Stage 2C (Victoria, Australia). The output is presented as a set of images, where each pixel in a portable network graphics is a plume thickness for a particular injection scenario at a particular day after the injection has commenced. The format is unsigned integer 16-bit. The data set contains images of two major types:</p> <p>1. REALISTIC: plumes are obtained from reservoir simulations in a complex geological model that was calibrated on an extensive set of geophysical surveys. File naming follows this convention 'plume_thick_real_scenario_%S_day_%N.png', where %S represents a string that encodes the injection scenario name and %N denotes day number after the injection started.</p> <p>2. VANILLA: plumes are obtained from reservoir simulations in a simple model of a reservoir that reflects only few typical features of the Otway injection interval. 'plume_thick_vanilla_scenario_%S_day_%N.png', where %S represents a string that encodes the injection scenario name and %N denotes day number after the injection started.</p>
Synthesis of a novel aluminum salt of nitrogen-containing alkylphosphinate with high char formation to flame retard acrylonitrile –butadiene–styrene
<p>A novel nitrogen-containing alkylphosphinate salt----aluminum β-(p-nitrobenzamide) ethyl methyl phosphinate (AlNP) was synthesized and used to flame retard acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS). The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, <sup>1</sup>H, <sup>13</sup>C and <sup>31</sup>P nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy (XRF) were applied to characterize the structure and composition of products. The flame retardancy performance, thermal properties and mechanical strength of the ABS/AlNP with respect to AlNP loading were investigated. AlNP was stable before 330 <sup>o</sup>C and decomposed very slowly with residues high up to 56.1 % at 700<sup> o</sup>C. Adding 25-30 wt% of AlNP alone can make ABS to pass V0 rating in the vertical burning tests (UL 94). The results according to the micro combustion calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis showed that AlNP can depress the heating release and retard the thermal degradation of the ABS. Scanning electron microscopy observation for the residues from LOI test indicated that AlNP formed the condensed and tough residues layer during combustion; XRF analysis showed that the residues contained phosphorus and aluminum element and nitrogen element was not detected. The compact phosphorus/aluminium-rich substance acted as a barrier to enhance flame-retardant properties of the ABS.</p>
NMR data in 'Ca2+-dependent release of Synaptotagmin-1 from the SNARE complex on phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate-containing membranes' by Voleti, Jaczynska and Rizo, eLife 2020
<p>The Ca<sup>2+</sup> sensor synaptotagmin-1 and the SNARE complex cooperate to trigger neurotransmitter release. Structural studies elucidated three distinct synaptotagmin-1-SNARE complex binding modes involving 'polybasic', 'primary' and 'tripartite' interfaces of synaptotagmin-1. We investigated these interactions using NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Synaptotagmin-1 binds to the SNARE complex through the polybasic and primary interfaces in solution. Ca<sup>2+</sup>-free synaptotagmin-1 binds to SNARE complexes anchored on PIP<sub>2</sub>-containing nanodiscs. R398Q/R399Q and E295A/Y338W mutations at the primary interface, which strongly impair neurotransmitter release, disrupt and enhance synaptotagmin-1-SNARE complex binding, respectively. Ca<sup>2+</sup> induces tight binding of synaptotagmin-1 to PIP<sub>2</sub>-containing nanodiscs, releasing synaptotagmin-1-SNARE interactions. Specific effects of mutations in the polybasic region on Ca<sup>2+</sup>-dependent synaptotagmin-1-PIP<sub>2</sub>-membrane interactions correlate with their effects on release. Our data suggest that synaptotagmin-1 binds to the SNARE complex through the primary interface and that Ca<sup>2+</sup> releases this interaction, inducing PIP<sub>2</sub>/membrane binding and allowing cooperation between synaptotagmin-1 and the SNAREs in membrane fusion to trigger release.</p>
Data from: A study of bacteria adhesion and microbial corrosion on different stainless steels in environment containing Desulfovibrio vulgaris manuscript
<p>Stainless steel is an important material used in many applications due to its mechanical strength and corrosion resistant properties. The high corrosion resistance of stainless steel is provided by the passive film. Different stainless steels have different alloy elements and surface properties which could have a significant influence on bacterial attachment to the surface and thus might result in different microbial corrosion behaviours. In this study, the effect of adhesion of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) and corrosion behaviour in artificial seawater on different stainless steels was investigated. Stainless steel materials used were SS 410, SS 420, SS 316 and DSS 2205 and pure chromium. The contact angle was measured to study the effect of surface properties of materials. Adhesion was measured by counting cells attached to the surface of materials. The corrosion behaviour of the materials was measured by electrochemical testing including measuring open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic behaviour. The long-term corrosion behaviour of each material was studied after six months exposure by measuring weight loss and surface analysis with SEM-EDX. The results show the high dependency on hydrophobicity of materials surfaces to bacterial attachment. However, bacterial attachment did not have a significant effect on the corrosion rate of the materials. Pure chromium had the best corrosion resistance to MIC with reduced bacterial attachment compared to the stainless steel samples. The nature of bacterial attachment and corrosion behaviour of the materials are discussed.</p>
Madagascan highlands: originally woodland and forest containing endemic grasses, not grazing-adapted grassland
Long considered a consequence of anthropogenic agropastoralism, the origin of Madagascar's central highland grassland is hotly disputed. Arguments that ancient endemic grasses formed grassland maintained by extinct grazers and fire have been persuasive. Consequent calls to repeal fire-suppression legislation, burn protected areas, and accept pastoralism as the 'salvation' of endemic grasses mount, even as the IUCN declares 98% of lemurs face extinction through fire-driven deforestation. By analysing grass data from contemporary studies, and assessing endemic vertebrate habitat and feeding guilds, we find that although the grassland potentially dates from the Miocene, it is inhospitable to endemic vertebrates, and lacks obligate grazers. Endemic grasses are absent from dominant grassland assemblages, yet not from woodland and forest assemblages. There is compelling evidence that humans entered a highland dominated by woodland and forest, and burned it; by 1000 CE grass pollens eclipsed tree pollens, reminiscent of prevailing fire-induced transformation of African miombo woodland to grassland. Endemic grasses are survivors from vanished woody habitats where grassy patches were likely small and ephemeral, precluding adaptive radiation by endemic vertebrates to form grazing guilds. Today forests, relic tapia woodland and outcompeted endemic grasses progressively retreat in a burning grassland dominated by non-endemic, grazing-adapted grasses and cattle.

Data from: Shared decision-making as a cost-containment strategy: US physician reactions from a cross-sectional survey
Objective: To assess US physicians' attitudes towards using shared decision-making (SDM) to achieve cost containment. Design: Cross-sectional mailed survey. Setting: US medical practice. Participants: 3897 physicians were randomly selected from the AMA Physician Masterfile. Of these, 2556 completed the survey. Main outcome measures: Level of enthusiasm for "Promoting better conversations with patients as a means of lowering healthcare costs"; degree of agreement with "Decision support tools that show costs would be helpful in my practice" and agreement with "should promoting SDM be legislated to control overall healthcare costs". Results: Of 2556 respondents (response rate (RR) 65%), two-thirds (67%) were 'very enthusiastic' about promoting SDM as a means of reducing healthcare costs. Most (70%) agreed decision support tools that show costs would be helpful in their practice, but only 24% agreed with legislating SDM to control costs. Compared with physicians with billing-only compensation, respondents with salary compensation were more likely to strongly agree that decision support tools showing costs would be helpful (OR 1.4; 95% CI 1.1 to 1.7). Primary care physicians (vs surgeons, OR 1.4; 95% CI 1.0 to 1.6) expressed more enthusiasm for SDM being legislated as a means to address healthcare costs. Conclusions: Most US physicians express enthusiasm about using SDM to help contain costs. They believe decision support tools that show costs would be useful. Few agree that SDM should be legislated as a means to control healthcare costs.
Data from: Seminal fluid of honeybees contains multiple mechanisms to combat infections of the sexually transmitted pathogen Nosema apis
The societies of ants, bees and wasps are genetically closed systems where queens only mate during a brief mating episode prior to their eusocial life and males therefore provide queens with a lifetime supply of high-quality sperm. These ejaculates also contain a number of defence proteins that have been detected in the seminal fluid but their function and efficiency have never been investigated in great detail. Here, we used the honeybee Apis mellifera and quantified whether seminal fluid is able to combat infections of the fungal pathogen Nosema apis, a widespread honeybee parasite that is also sexually transmitted. We provide the first empirical evidence that seminal fluid has a remarkable antimicrobial activity against N. apis spores and that antimicrobial seminal fluid components kill spores in multiple ways. The protein fraction of seminal fluid induces extracellular spore germination, which disrupts the life cycle of N. apis, whereas the non-protein fraction of seminal fluid induces a direct viability loss of intact spores. We conclude that males provide their ejaculates with efficient antimicrobial molecules that are able to kill N. apis spores and thereby reduce the risk of disease transmission during mating. Our findings could be of broader significance to master honeybee diseases in managed honeybee stock in the future.
