Early snowmelt and warming experiments to study plant phenology
Phenology - the timing of life events - determines how a species’ life cycle aligns with the abiotic and biotic environment, however, climate change has altered the environmental cues organisms use to track climate leading to shifts in phenology. In high latitude environments, phenological shifts in plants are associated with both temperature and the timing of snowmelt, but the mechanism underlying the effect of snowmelt on phenology remains unclear. Here we aim to disentangle the effects of experimental warming and earlier snowmelt on the phenology of three long lived perennial wildflowers. In the summer of 2019, we factorially crossed passive warming with early snowmelt timing within a subalpine plant community in the Colorado Rocky Mountains at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory to understand the individual effects of these aspects of climate change.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data set includes aboveground plant biomass from winter warming, summer warming, and control treatment plots at CiPEHR.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Canopy coverage and frequency were recorded in 20 circular 10 sq m plots. Six treatments were sampled, three ungrazed and three to grazed by native grazers. In each case one of the three watersheds was unburned, another burned annually in April, the third burned every four years in April. In each treatment two soils were sampled: a lower-slope deep fertile nonrocky soil (tully silty clay loam), and a shallow rocky soil (florence cherty silt loam) on level to gently sloping ridges. In 1983 another ungrazed annual burn area '1c' was added 'both tully and florence soils' because original area '1d' appeared aberrant.

Plant community typing (2009 update), Andrews Experimental Forest
Plant Communities of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest (revised 2009). A total of 23 forest communities have been identified and characterized in a preliminary manner. Data used in formatting the classification had previously been collected on 300 reconnaissance plots located on the H. J. Andrews Forest and surrounding area. Vegetation classification was facilitated by similarity analysis and stand ordination procedures developed by Dr. Will Moir, formerly of Colorado State University. Results of stand ordination indicate the presence of strong moisture and temperature gradients along which forest stands array themselves. Above ground plant biomass in a mesic acidic tussock tundra experimental site from 1982 to 2015 Arctic LTER, Toolik Lake, Alaska.
Above ground plant biomass and leaf area were measured in a moist acidic tussock tundra experimental site. The plots were set up in 1981 and have been harvested in periodical (See Shaver and Chapin Ecological Monographs, 61(1), 1991 pp.1-31. Mack, et al, Nature 2004 431:440-443) This file contains the biomass numbers for each harvested quadrat and per cent carbon and nitrogen summaries for harvests through 2000. Leaf area data is presented in other data files (see http://ecosystems.mbl.edu/arc).

Above ground plant and below ground stem biomass, percent nitrogen, and percent carbon were measured in the Arctic LTER dry heath tundra experimental plots. Treatments included control, and nitrogen and phosphorus amended plots for 10 years, and exclosure plots with and without added nitrogen and phosphorus.

Leaf and plant tissue area and mass from shoots harvested from 19 1m x 1m point frame plots near Toolik Field Station, AK during the summer of 2012. Six shoots were harvested from each plot, two from each canopy layer: upper, middle, and low. Each shoot came from a different plant, and the species selected was based on the species dominant in that canopy layer. The leaf area and mass were used to correct A/Ci and light response curves taken on each shoot [data published separately]. At the time of collection, the location relative to the point frame, height, and leaf area index (LAI) of each shoot was measured; those data are included here.

This dataset contains a summary of plant species composition and abundance data from thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains in 2006. This includes stem counts by species (or genus) for all woody plants less then 2m in height (both separated by dbh size class and combined), stem counts by species for all woody plants greater then 2m in height, percent cover of each forb and graminoid species, mosses, and lichens, and percent of bare ground. The presence or absence of moose and snowshoe hare feces are also indicated.

This dataset contains leaf, aboveground stem, and fruit carbon and N concentration and natural abundance isotope data for new and old tissue fractions of common and rare plant species in burned and unburned black spruce forest stands. Stands were located in either Caribou-Poker Creek or Delta Junction, in either unburned areas, or in areas burned in 1999 fires. Biomass was collected between 2000 and 2001 in mid-July at peak biomass.

This dataset contains invasive plant and stand level data for study sites along the Dalton and Parks highways in interior Alaska in the summer of 2012. Study sites were situated in burned and mature black spruce forests to compare invasive plant colonization patterns. Invasive plant density estimates along the road adjacent to each site are included, as well as invasive plant density within study sites. Other data includes ground cover estimates for dominant ground cover types, estimates of seedling abundance for dominant tree species, soil paramters (mineral soil pH and mineral soil moisture, residual organic layer/ organic layer depths, and active layer depths).
