Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating and Drying Research (DryPEHR): GPS Plot Locations

This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warming affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieved using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011. This dataset contains plot locations made using a differential GPS with real time kinematic correction in early August of 2017.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Thaw Gradient: GPS Plot Locations

In this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and dissolved organic carbon, in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Field measurements center on a natural experiment where permafrost has been observed to warm and thaw over the past several decades. This area represents a gradient of sites each with a different degree of change due to permafrost thawing. As such, this area is unique for addressing questions at the time and spatial scales relevant for change in arctic ecosystems. This dataset contains plot locations made using a differential GPS with real time kinematic correction in early August of 2017.

Vegetation surveys at CAP LTER ripirain-area bird-monitoring locations in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (2013)

Over the past half-century, the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA) has been one of the fastest growing regions in the US, experiencing rapid urban expansion in addition to urban intensification. This backdrop provides an ideal setting to monitor biodiversity changes in response to urbanization, and the CAP LTER has been using a standardized point-count protocol to monitor the bird population throughout the GPMA and surrounding Sonoran desert region since 2000. A subset of these bird-monitoring sites are located in riparian areas, and additional riparian-area monitoring locations centered on the Salt River as it runs through the GPMA were added in 2013 and 2014. In May and June of 2013, the CAP LTER surveyed the vegetation in 6,400 square meter plots around all of these riparian-area sites as part of an analysis of change in bird abundance and community composition. This dataset catalogs the results of vegetation surveys at nineteen bird-monitoring sites in riparian areas of the GPMA.

Tree, shrub, and herb data from 10 Hillslope Project sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin

Vegetation was surveyed on 10 sites in the upper Little Tennessee River watershed in Macon County, North Carolina during the summer of 2012. The sites represent a gradient of development, including forested sites, agricultural sites, and exurban sites. All woody vegetation >2.5 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) was measured and identified within twelve 10 x 10 m plots at each site. Woody shrubs >0.5 m in height and <2.5 cm DBH were counted and identified within a 1x10 m transect in each plot. Herbs and woody plants <0.5m in height were identified and percent cover estimated in 3 1 x 1 m subplots located within each of the larger 10 x 10 m plots.

Continuously measured soil moisture, soil temperature, and air temperature from a side-slope station located in Watershed 27, Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory

Long-term soil moisture stations were established within the Coweeta Hydrologic Lab Basin to collect measurements of soil moisture, soil temperature, air temperature, and relative humidity at a range of spatial scales, from ridge to cove and low to high elevations in the southern Appalachians, and across the regional range of rainfall amounts.

Patch occupancy sampling of invertebrates and salamanders from Coweeta Synoptic sampling sites located in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin, 2009 to 2012.

This research was conducted in Macon County, North Carolina, as part of the Coweeta LTER synoptic sampling program. In the summers of 2009-2012 we sampled and counted Tallaperla species, Elimia species, fish, and salamanders found in a 150meter stretch at the synoptic sites, a total of 44 sites. The 150meter stretch was divided into thirty 5meter plots that were sampled on three occasions each year of sampling; in 2009 all 44 sites were sample, in 2010 a subset of 8 sites were sampled, in 2011 a subset of 9 sites were sampled, and in 2012 a subset of 8 sites were sampled.

Soil lysimeter chemistry data from various locations on Niwot Ridge and in the Green Lakes Valley 1994 - 2013.

Water was collected from soil lysimeters at key sites across Niwot Ridge and the Green Lakes Valley in the tundra and subalpine forest. Zero-tension soil lysimeters in the City of Boulder Watershed were deployed in the mid-1980’s. Additional zero-tension lysimeters were installed at Subnivean and Soddie sites in 1997. At c1 in 2010, 12 Tension lysimeters (Soil Moisture Equipment Corp Model 1900 Soil Water Sampler ) were installed at C1.SO, C1.ST and C1.SW sites, with four lysimeters at each site. In 2012, 15 additional zero tension lysimeters were installed in the City of Boulder Watershed at Gl5, Arikaree, and D1 locations (with 5 lysimeters at each site).
