Figure 1 from: Eitzel M.V (2021) A modeler's manifesto: Synthesizing modeling best practices with social science frameworks to support critical approaches to data science. Research Ideas and Outcomes 7: e71553. https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.7.e71553

Figure 1 Workflow diagram for manifesto practices, showing which project stages may benefit from which practices. Interdisciplinary fluency, engaging with community-based modeling, and paying attention to power dynamics as well as impacts and implications are all important at all stages of modeling work. Epistemic consistency is important throughout model development (the three middle steps of model choice, construction, and description) and communication, while triangulation and mixed methods contribute largely to model development. The data biography is most important in the model description stage, though one may need to keep a journal and track details of the model development process in order to create the data biography. Treating uncertainty as openness is most important in model communication and application; however, this could feed back into iterative model development steps as well, or one could design models to aid in treating uncertainty as openness.

Engaging Health Sciences Librarians on Data Ethics: Case Study on a Pilot Curriculum (Dataset)

This repository contains de-identified evaluation data collected as part of the Ethical Considerations of Data: A Curriculum for Health Sciences Librarians pilot as well as the data collection instrument used.

These files are related to a forthcoming JMLA Case Study titled Engaging Health Sciences Librarians on Data Ethics: Case Study on a Pilot Curriculum.

Paper Abstract:
Three medical librarians developed a pilot curriculum designed to address perceived gaps in librarian training in regards to data ethics. One of the team members had additional academic training in ethics and bioethics, which helped to provide an intellectual foundation for this project. Our three-module class aimed to provide students with an overview of major ethical frameworks, skills to apply those frameworks to data issues, and an exploration of ethical considerations and challenges faced in libraries. Participants from library schools and professional library organizations were invited to apply. Twenty-four LIS professionals and students attended the Zoom-based class and shared their thoughts and attitudes by means of a survey after each session and in a focus group after the conclusion of the class.

Figure 4 - The simplified transcription replication and validation step. Following three independent transcriptions of a record, data is reconciled and returned to the original data provider. Records sent back to the provider can be fully complete, partially complete, of fully incomplete. Fully complete records are those where all three citizen scientist volunteers (CS) agree on every field of the record. Partial records include only those fields where CS agree. Fully incomplete records indicate that volunteers were largely unable to transcribe the record consistently. Data collected that does not become part of the final record is still made available for further review by the data provider.

Figure 3 - The Notes from Nature transcription tool for NHMUK museum ledgers. The tool gives users basic methods to navigate through a page of collections records while transcribing each major component of the record, viewing help dialogs, or skipping difficult to transcribe record entries. For help dialogs, we provide more than one example for each record element. The record outline is a movable window and, during transcription, the image and the tool location on that image is also captured as metadata, so that data managers can return quickly return to the source material for any record.
