Future of Oak Forests experiment - DBH of trees in Black Rock Forest, New York, USA, 2007.

This data set contains the measurement of diameter at breast height (1.4 meters above ground) (dbh) for individual non-oak and oak trees at the Future of Oak Forests (FOF) experiment in Black Rock Forest (Cornwall, NY) during July and August of 2007. The North Slope site contains 12 square-shaped plots, each of 75 meters by 75 meters. Each plot was subdivided into nine equal-sized subplots, each of 25 meters by 25 meters. Within each plot, all individual oak trees with dbh of at least 2.4 centimeters were measured using metric DBH tapes (e.g. Lufkin executive thinline). Within each center subplot of a plot, all individual non-oak trees with dbh of at least 2.4 centimeters were measured using metric DBH tapes (e.g. Lufkin executive thinline). This data can be used to study the individual variation and metabolic scaling of oak and non-oak species in the Forest.

Soil and canopy temperature data from the LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots. In 1989 a treatment plots were established in a moist acidic tundra. Treatments include nitrogen and phosphorus addition, warming with a simple greenhouse, warming with nitrogen and phosphorus addition, shading with shade cloth and shading with nitrogen and phosphorus. In 1990 data logger was installed in block 2 to measure soil temperatures and basic meteorological data. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Sensors were placed in control, fertilized, greenhouse, greenhouse fertilized, shade house and shade house fertilized sites.

2007 pre-treatment soils pH, nutrients, texture:Nutrient Network: A cross-site investigation of bottom-up control over herbaceous plant community dynamics and ecosystem function.

This experiment is one implementation of a globally distributed experiment, known as the Nutrient Network. At Cedar Creek, as in over 70 other sites in grasslands around the world, the experiment aims to describe impacts of increased nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur and other metals) and decreased herbivory (removal of mammals by fencing). Two overarching questions are being explored with these manipulations: 1. To what extent are plant production and diversity co-limited by multiple nutrients in herbaceous-dominated communities? 2. Under what conditions do grazers or fertilization control plant biomass, diversity, and composition? By utilizing identical protocols at diverse grassland sites around the world, NutNet aims to uncover both the generalities in ecosystem functioning, and the contingencies or differences which can obscure those common mechanisms. In addition to the standard NutNet protocol, e247 includes an additional low Nitrogen gradient (1 gram Nitrogen per meter squared per year and 5 grams Nitrogen per meter squared per year in addition to the standard 10 grams Nitrogen per meter squared per year).

Dataset Abstract A compilation of data from John Hoben’s thesis work. Six rates of nitrogen fertilizer (0-225 kg N ha-1) were broadcast and incorporated prior to planting on commercially farmed fields in Michigan at four farms and one experiment station. Talus microbes and plant assessment for the upper Green Lake Valley from 2007 to 2008.

It is increasingly recognized that species distributions are driven by both abiotic factors and biotic interactions. Despite much recent work incorporating competition, predation, and mutualism into species distribution models (SDMs), the focus has been confined to aboveground macroscopic interactions. Biotic interactions between plants and soil microbial communities are understudied as potentially important drivers of plant distributions. Some soil bacteria promote plant growth by cycling nutrients, while others are pathogenic; thus they have a high potential for influencing plant occurrence. We investigated the influence of soil bacterial clades on the distributions of bryophytes and 12 vascular plant species in a high elevation talus-field ecosystem in the Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado, USA. We used an information- theoretic criterion (AICc) modeling approach to compare SDMs with the following different sets of predictors: abiotic variables, abiotic variables and other plant abundances, abiotic variables and soil bacteria clade relative abundances, and a full model with abiotic factors, plant abundances, and bacteria relative abundances. We predicted that bacteria would influence plant distributions both positively and negatively, and that these interactions would improve prediction of plant species distributions. We found that inclusion of either plant or bacteria biotic predictors generally improved the fit, deviance explained, and predictive power of the SDMs, and for the majority of the species, adding information on both other plants and bacteria yielded the best model. Interactions between the modeled species and biotic predictors were both positive and negative, suggesting the presence of competition, parasitism, and facilitation. While our results indicate that plant–plant co-occurrences are a stronger driver of plant distributions than plant–bacteria co-occurrences, they also show that bacteria can explain parts of plant distributions that remain
