Dietary protein and sodium co-limit cockroach growth and reproduction, 2019-2020
The dataset contains information on a feeding study done on the cockroach species Blaptica dubia. Cockroaches were assigned to a combination of treatments that contained two levels of protein (low 21% or high 27%) and three levels of sodium (low 0.06%, medium 0.15%, or high 0.3%). Cockroaches were reared until reaching maturity, growth measurements were taken every 14 days. Individuals from the same treatment were then paired to reproduce their first clutch of offspring.
Plant composition data from 67 grassland sites of the Upper Gunnison Basin, CO, USA, 2014
Here, we deposit data from a vegetation survey conducted in 2014. The data was collected to document current vegetation patterns in the region, parameterize species distribution models, and assess community turnover in flower color. The survey was conducted in the Upper Gunnison Basin and the environs around the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, CO, USA, spanning an elevation gradient from 2700-4000m above sea level. Data were acquired through visual estimates of percent cover of species within replicate quadrats in a site. We include information scraped from the USDA Plants Database (https://plants.sc.egov.usda.gov/java/) on species lifeform, life history, and invasive status.
Temporal variation in plant-pollinator interactions, Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, CO, USA, 2013 - 2015
These datafiles contain the plant-pollinator interaction data collected by Paul CaraDonna et al. at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, CO, USA during the 2013, 2014 and 2015 growing season. These data were collected to investigate temporal variation in plant-pollinator interactions; specifically, these data were collected in a manner to allow for the construction of weekly plant-pollinator interaction networks in order to investigate fine scale temporal variation in plant-pollinator interactions. The data represent extensive community-wide field observations of animal pollinators visiting flowering plants in a subalpine ecosystem for the majority of the summer growing season (May–September).
Co-exposure of uranyl acetate and sodium arsenite differentially alters gene expression in CD3/CD28 activated CD4+ T-cells.
Communities in the western region of the United States experience environmental exposure to metal mixtures from living in proximity to numerous unremediated abandoned uranium mines. Metals including arsenic and uranium co-occur in and around these sites at levels higher than the United States Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant levels. To address the potential effect of these metals on the activation of CD4+ T-cells, we used RNA sequencing methods to determine the effect of exposure to uranyl acetate, sodium arsenite or a mixture of uranyl acetate and sodium arsenite. Oxidative stress is a mechanism proposed for metal toxicity, but findings for uranium differ across cell models. No significant changes in oxidative stress genes were detected for uranyl acetate, in contrast to sodium arsenite. Sodium arsenite induced a dose dependent effect on activation associated gene expression, targeting immune response genes at the lower dose. While uranyl acetate alone did not significantly alter activation associated gene expression, the mixture demonstrated a combined effect relative to sodium arsenite alone. The results demonstrate the need to investigate uranium alone and in metalloid mixtures at environmentally relevant concentrations to better understand the toxicological impact of these mixtures on T-cell activation, function and immune dysregulation.
Co-occurrence of in-stream nitrogen fixation and denitrification across a nitrogen gradient in a western U.S. watershed, 2015 - 2016
This data was collected as part of the NSF CAREER Grant DEB 14-51919 to Amy Marcarelli to evaluate if nitrogen fixation and denitrification co-occur in streams across a gradient of nitrate concentrations. This data was collected during summer 2015 and 2016 in the Portneuf River watershed near Pocatello, ID. In summer 2015, rates of nitrogen fixation were only measured on rock substrate and denitrification only on sediment substrate. In summer 2016, both process rates were measured on both rock and sediment substrate to more accurately capture variation in rates.
Sap Flux and Microclimate Data for Co-Occurring White Spruce and Paper Birch at an Intermediate Aged Stand in the Bonanza Creek LTER Regional Site Network 2013-2018
This dataset contains hourly mean sap flux density and microclimate data for co-occurring white spruce and Alaska paper birch from early June of 2013 to mid-September of 2018. The data were published as part of a 2021 article in Journal of Ecology.
The co-occurrence of MHW characteristics and in situ sampling from CCE-CalCOFI Augmented Cruises in the California Current System,1983~2021
The intensity and duration of each MHW event and the anomalies of in situ nitracline and plankton abundance in the Southern California Current System (the region south of line 76.7; 29-36°N, 117-125°W) were calculated. In situ data are available from ~quarterly CalCOFI cruises. Data collected from 1983 onward were utilized, including nitrate, picoplankton and bacteria abundance, size-fractionated Chla concentration, vertically-integrated Chla, vertically-integrated primary production, phytoplankton taxon-specific pigments from High-Performance Liquid-Chromatography (HPLC) analysis, zooplankton displacement volume (ZDV), zooplankton taxon-specific abundance, and fish egg and larvae abundance.

This high local diversity is challenging to explain since closely related species are often functionally similar and density-dependent interactions such as competition and susceptibility to pests and pathogens should limit their co-occurrence. However, if willow species are partitioning resources, or if they are phylogenetically structured so that closely related species rarely co-occur, then the impact of these density-dependent processes could be reduced. In this study, I examined the role of niche partitioning in maintaining local willow diversity by comparing species physiology in a greenhouse.

SGS-LTER Standard Met Data: Monthly precipitation totals and temperatures from the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, CO 1941-1973
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Datasets auto12_climdb and man11_climdb have been processed for quality and missing values.

Logical model for mutually exclusive and co-occurring genetic alterations in bladder tumorigenesis
<p>Relationships between genetic alterations, such as co-occurrence or mutual exclusivity, are often observed in cancer, where their understanding may provide new insights into etiology and clinical management. In this study, we combined statistical analyses and computational modelling to explain patterns of genetic alterations seen in 178 patients with bladder tumours (either muscle-invasive or non-muscle-invasive). A statistical analysis on frequently altered genes identified pair associations including co-occurrence or mutual exclusivity. Focusing on genetic alterations of protein-coding genes involved in growth factor receptor signalling, cell cycle and apoptosis entry, we complemented this analysis with a literature search to focus on nine pairs of genetic alterations of our dataset, with subsequent verification in three other datasets available publically. To understand the reasons and contexts of these patterns of associations while accounting for the dynamics of associated signalling pathways, we built a logical model. This model was validated first on published mutant mice data, then used to study patterns and to draw conclusions on counter-intuitive observations, allowing one to formulate predictions about conditions where combining genetic alterations benefits tumorigenesis. For example, while CDKN2A homozygous deletions occur in a context of FGFR3 activating mutations, our model suggests that additional PIK3CA mutation or p21CIP deletion would greatly favour invasiveness. Further, the model sheds light on the temporal orders of gene alterations, for example, showing how mutual exclusivity of FGFR3 and TP53 mutations is interpretable if FGFR3 is mutated first. Floral density and co-occurring congeners alter patterns of selection in annual plant communities
While the evolution and diversification of flowers is often attributed to pollinator-mediated selection, interactions between co-occurring plant species can alter patterns of selection mediated by pollinators and other agents. The extent to which both floral density and congeneric species richness affect patterns of net and pollinator-mediated selection on multiple co-occurring species in a community is unknown and is likely to depend on whether co-occurring plants experience competition or facilitation for reproduction. We conducted an observational study of selection on four species of <i>Clarkia</i> (Onagraceae) and tested for pollinator-mediated selection on two <i>Clarkia</i> species in communities differing in congeneric species richness and local floral density. When selection varied with community context, selection was generally stronger in communities with fewer species, where local conspecific floral density was higher, and where local heterospecific floral density was lower. These patterns suggest that intraspecific competition at high densities and interspecific competition at low densities may affect the evolution of floral traits. However, selection on floral traits was not pollinator-mediated in <i>C. cylindrica</i> or <i>C. xantiana</i>, despite variation in pollinator visitation and the extent of pollen limitation across communities for <i>C. cylindrica</i>. As such, interactions between co-occurring species may alter patterns of selection mediated by abiotic agents of selection.
