St Bride's Graveyard, Callander - Cross Fragment
These stones are set into a specially heightened portion of the N wall of St. Bride's graveyard at NN 58508 09828. The section has sadly now toppled and in urgent need of restoration. The section bearing the stones lies intact but inverted in the adjoining field. The 1987 WOSAS survey of the site states 'A fragment of a cross slab with a simple incised Greek cross has been built in to the north wall of the burial ground. It was found nearby in 1932. It is about 10" square. It is now weathered and flaking'. It is difficult to square this description with the mounted section as it appears to comprise two distinct materials - it appears that the possible fragment has set into concrete (?) to make a bevelled square slab to fit with the aesthetics of the 1932 date stone setting. What appears to be the 'cross fragment' is of a pinkish stone but the 'Greek cross' shape is not discernable. It might be that WOSAS have interpreted to 10-inch sqare slab as a broken arm of of a Greek-style cross. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Antikythera Mechanism Main Fragment (CT)
3D surface model based on the highest resolution CT scan of the main fragment of the Antikythera Mechanism after improvement of the corrupted scan as detailed in https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0207430. The Antikythera mechanism (an ancient greek astronomical calculator) originally made of bronze, was recovered from the sea after 2000 years, over this time it had corroded and become a calcified lump. This has changed the homogeneity of the original metal (if there was any in the first place) making it incredibly difficult to extract the mechanism from the CT scan to produce a 3D model. Marriage Stone Fragment - Kilshane Demesne
This fragment was rediscovered during works on the 19th C. coach house at Kilshane Demesne Co. Tipperary. The stone has sprial line work on the outer edge with the date 160? and VB : B? underneath. These are likely the initial of the couple who were married. Given the date in the 17th C. it is likely this stone came from a nearby Scelin Castle (TS067-058----) c. 1km to SSW. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6), 'On the lands of Swyfine in the s[ai]d. Parish [Killshane] stands a castle in good repayre'. By 1840 the castle was no longer standing. The OS Letters (1840) description mentions, 'a small portion of a stone wall….on the summit of the hill, belongs to a Castle that formerly stood here and was called Caislean Suidh Finn. Kilshane house and assocaited farm buildings where this stone and other Medievil fragments were discovered was built in the 1800's and likely stone from the nearby castle was used in the construction. Fragment of coiled ceramic horn
3D model of a fragment of a 16th-century ceramic trumpet found during the excavation of the Skriðuklaustur monastery in eastern Iceland. ICP-MS analysis revealed that the trumpet was produced in a workshop in Lower Saxony, Germany. From there it was first transported to Bremen or Hamburg and then shipped to Iceland with Hanseatic merchants. Such trumpets were called "pilgrim horns" and were commonly used to call the brethren to services. No other ceramic pieces of this kind have been found in Iceland before. Physical object held by the National Museum of Iceland nr: 2008-36-921. Found 22/07/2008, found & logged by BB/GT Part of the Skriðuklaustur Monastery 1550 reconstruction.
