Data from: Conserved G-matrices of morphological and life-history traits among continental and island blue tit populations

The genetic variance–covariance matrix (G-matrix) summarizes the genetic architecture of multiple traits. It has a central role in the understanding of phenotypic divergence and the quantification of the evolutionary potential of populations. Laboratory experiments have shown that G-matrices can vary rapidly under divergent selective pressures. However, because of the demanding nature of G-matrix estimation and comparison in wild populations, the extent of its spatial variability remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigate spatial variation in G-matrices for morphological and life-history traits using long-term data sets from one continental and three island populations of blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) that have experienced contrasting population history and selective environment. We found no evidence for differences in G-matrices among populations. Interestingly, the phenotypic variance–covariance matrices (P) were divergent across populations, suggesting that using P as a substitute for G may be inadequate. These analyses also provide the first evidence in wild populations for additive genetic variation in the incubation period (that is, the period between last egg laid and hatching) in all four populations. Altogether, our results suggest that G-matrices may be stable across populations inhabiting contrasted environments, therefore challenging the results of previous simulation studies and laboratory experiments.

<p>26 Mitochondrial genomes from the paper &quot;Life history traits impact the nuclear rate of substitution but not the mitochondrial rate in isopods&quot; submitted to Molecular Biology and Evolution.</p> <p>We reconstructed mitochondrial genomes using both the de novo transcriptome assemblies from Francois et al. (2016) and low coverage genome sequencing reads available for 22 species from Lef ebure et al. (2017). Since mitochondrial genomes are present in multiple copies per cell, a very low sequencing effort is sufficient to yield a high coverage for mitochondrial sequences. Using the DNA-seq reads, mitogenomes were assembled with MITObim (Hahn et al. 2013) using the COI gene as a seed to build the complete mitogenome.</p>

Data from: Intraspecific variations in life history traits of two pecky rice bug species from Japan: mapping emergence dates and number of annual generations

<p>The mirid bugs Stenotus rubrovittatus and Trigonotylus caelestialium, which cause pecky rice, have become a threat to rice cultivation in Asia. Damage caused by these pests has rapidly become frequent since around 2000 in Japan. Their expansion pattern is not simple, and predicting their future spread remains challenging. Some insects with wide ranges have locally adapted variations in life-history traits. We performed laboratory rearing experiments to assess the geographical scale of intraspecific variations in life-history traits of S. rubrovittatus and T. caelestialium. The experiments were aimed at increasing the accuracy of occurrence estimates and the number of generations per year. These results were compared with previous research, and differences in development rates were observed between populations of different latitudes, but not of the same latitude. Finally, plotting the timing of adult emergence and the potential number of generations per year on maps with a 5-km grid revealed that they differed greatly locally at the same latitude. These maps can be used for developing more efficient methods of managing mirid bugs in integrated pest management.</p>
