This dataset contains the GPS-ed locations of the quadrats used for the 2017-2018 Space for Time substitution experiment in tidal creek marshes off the Rowley River and Plum Island Sound in Rowley Massachusetts. Locations of Uniola paniculata on selected Virginia Barrier Islands, 2017
A survey was made of the dunes of Assawoman, Northern Metompkin, Cedar, Cobb, Parramore, Hog, Wreck, Smith and Fisherman's islands and the locations of patches of Uniola paniculata were identified. No patches were found on islands for which there is no data. Inflorescence (seed head) stalks of the plants were counted from each location. Pictures were taken at some locations. Travel to the islands and logistical support was provided by the Virginia Tech Shorebird crew. Tree ages and Locations on the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge
Cores were taken from live trees in the hillslope site in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. "TreeAges.csv" has the ID of the tree, the UTM 18N Easting and Northing and the NAVD88 Elevation (these are identical to the hillslope "ALIVE" points in the topographic surveys - dataset VCR19288), and the year that the tree was established from the dendrochronology analysis. Complete methods for the dendrochronology analysis can be found in Fernandes et al. (2018) Declining radial growth response of coastal forests to hurricanes and nor'easters. JGR: Biogeosciences. (https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JG004125) Location and elevation data were collected using a real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.
Muskrat Lodge Locations near transect 1 on northern Hog Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve 2005-2015
Locations of lodges of muskrats near Transect 1 on the northern end of Hog Island in May 2005 and repeated in May 2007, April 2009, May 2011, April 2013 and March 2015. In April 2009 no active muskrat lodges were observed from Transect 1. The remains of two lodges were observed, but they were less than 20 cm in height, had vegetation growing out of them, and showed no sign of activity, so they were not surveyed. Similarly in April 2011 a survey yielded no lodges. So for 2009 and 2011 GIS files were not created, because they would not have contained any points. In 2013 and 2015 one and three lodges were observed, respectively. Data collection was ceased after 2015, when the spread of Phragmites decreased visibility along the open areas of the transect to a few meters, making it impossible to detect lodges adjacent to the transect. Comments in the attribute tables in the layers contains information on the diameter and height(in decimeters or meters) of lodges.

Data from: Sierra Nevada mountain lake microbial communities are structured by temperature, resources, and geographic location
<p><span>Warming, eutrophication (nutrient fertilization) and brownification (increased loading of allochthonous organic matter) are three global trends impacting lake ecosystems. However, the independent and synergistic effects of resource addition and warming on autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms are largely unknown. In this study, we investigate the independent and interactive effects of temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC, both allochthonous and autochthonous), and nitrogen (N) supply, in addition to the effect of spatial variables, on the composition, richness, and evenness of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities in lakes across elevation and N deposition gradients in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, USA. We found that both prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities are structured by temperature, terrestrial (allochthonous) DOC and latitude. Prokaryotic communities are also influenced by total and aquatic (autochthonous) DOC, while eukaryotic communities are also structured by nitrate. Additionally, increasing N availability was associated with reduced richness of prokaryotic communities, and both lower richness and evenness of eukaryotes. We did not detect any synergistic or antagonistic effects as there were no interactions among temperature and resource variables. Together, our results suggest that (a) organic and inorganic resources, temperature, and geographic location (based on latitude and longitude) independently influence lake microbial communities; and (b) increasing N supply due to atmospheric N deposition may reduce richness of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes, likely by reducing niche dimensionality. Our study provides insight into abiotic processes structuring microbial communities across environmental gradients and their potential roles in material and energy fluxes within and between ecosystems.</span></p>
Effects of sampling seasons and locations on fish environmental DNA metabarcoding in dam reservoirs
<p>Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis has seen rapid development in the last decade, as a novel biodiversity monitoring method. Previous studies have evaluated optimal strategies, at several experimental steps of eDNA metabarcoding, for the simultaneous detection of fish species. However, optimal sampling strategies, especially the season and the location of water sampling, have not been evaluated thoroughly. To identify optimal sampling seasons and locations, we performed sampling monthly or at two-monthly intervals throughout the year in three dam reservoirs. Water samples were collected from 15 and 9 locations in the Miharu and Okawa dam reservoirs in Fukushima Prefecture, respectively, and 5 locations in the Sugo dam reservoir in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. One liter of water was filtered with glass-fiber filters and eDNA was extracted. By performing MiFish metabarcoding, we successfully detected a total of 21, 24, and 22 fish species in Miharu, Okawa, and Sugo reservoirs, respectively. From these results, the eDNA metabarcoding method had a similar level of performance compared to conventional long-term data. Furthermore, it was found to be effective in evaluating entire fish communities. The number of species detected by eDNA survey peaked in May in Miharu and Okawa reservoirs, and in March and June in Sugo reservoir, which corresponds with the breeding seasons of many of fish species inhabiting the reservoirs. In addition, the number of detected species was significantly higher in shore, compared to offshore samples in the Miharu reservoir, and a similar tendency was found in the other two reservoirs. Based on these results, we can conclude that the efficiency of species detection by eDNA metabarcoding could be maximized by collecting water from shore locations during the breeding seasons of the inhabiting fish. These results will contribute in the determination of sampling seasons and locations for fish fauna survey via eDNA metabarcoding, in the future.</p>
Data from: Geographic location and food availability offer differing levels of influence on the bacterial communities associated with larval sea urchins
Determining the factors underlying the assembly, structure, and diversity of symbiont communities remains a focal point of animal-microbiome research. Much of these efforts focus on taxonomic variation of microbiota within or between animal populations, but rarely test the proportional impacts of ecological components that may affect animal-associated microbiota. Using larvae from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, we test the hypothesis that, under natural conditions, inter-population differences in the composition of larval-associated bacterial communities are larger than intra-population variation due to a heterogeneous feeding environment. Despite significant differences in bacterial community structure within each S. droebachiensis larval population based on food availability, development, phenotype, and time, variation in OTU membership and community composition correlated more strongly with geographic location. Moreover, 20-30% of OTUs associated with larvae were specific to a single location while less than 10% were shared. Taken together, these results suggest that inter-populational variation in symbiont communities may be more pronounced than intra-populational variation, and that this difference may suggest that broad scale ecological variables (e.g., across ocean basins) may mask smaller scale ecological variables (e.g., food availability).
WEGE: A new metric for ranking locations for biodiversity conservation
<p>Aim Effective policy making for biological conservation requires the identification and ranking of the most important areas for protection or management. One of the most frequently used systems for selecting priority areas is Key Biodiversity Areas (hereafter KBAs), developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, KBAs cannot be used to rank areas, potentially limiting their use when limited funding is available. To tackle this shortcoming and facilitate spatial prioritization, here we develop and validate the "WEGE index" (Weighted Endemism including Global Endangerment index), consisting of an adaptation of the EDGE score (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered). WEGE allows the ranking of any set of locations according to the KBA guidelines and on a continuous scale. Location Global. Methods We calculated the EDGE score, Weighted Endemism, Evolutionary distinctiveness, Extinction risk and our newly developed WEGE index for all terrestrial species of amphibians, mammals and birds accessed by IUCN. We then compared the performance of each of those five indices at prioritizing areas according to the KBA guidelines. Results We found that for all taxa surveyed, WEGE was consistently better at identifying areas that trigger KBA status. Main conclusions In our analyses, WEGE outperformed all other methods and metrics designed for similar purposes. It can therefore serve as a robust evidence-based methodology to prioritize among otherwise equally qualified sites according to the KBA categories. WEGE can therefore support transparent, evidence-based and biologically meaningful decision-making for conservation priorities.</p>
