<p>This record contains raw data related to article &ldquo;Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: A Single-Center Retrospective Study and Literature Review&quot;</p> <p><strong>Objective: </strong> Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is a challenging condition to manage that is treated with Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS). The aim of this report is to assess the safety, efficacy, and durability of GKRS for the treatment of TN in patients with MS. Our findings are compared with those of the existing literature and discussed.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong> We retrospectively reviewed all patients at our institution who underwent GKRS for the treatment of TN secondary to MS and had 1 or more years of follow-up. Preoperative and postoperative pain intensities and facial numbness were evaluated with the Barrow Neurological Institute scores. Durability of successful pain relief was statistically evaluated with Kaplan-Meier analysis. The prognostic role of perioperative factors was investigated and analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong> There were 29 patients with MS-TN who underwent GKRS at our institution. Two patients underwent bilateral treatment. Four patients underwent repeat GKRS for pain recurrence. The median period of follow-up assessment was 33 months. Rates of reasonable pain reduction at 1, 3, and 5 years were 70%, 57%, and 57% respectively. All patients who underwent repeat GKRS had durable pain reduction. No prognostic factor for successful pain reduction was found.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong> Our study shows that GKRS for the treatment of TN secondary to MS is a safe and effective procedure in controlling pain in the short term but often fails to provide long-term pain control. GKRS can be safely repeated to prolong the time of pain reduction.</p>

<p>This record contains raw data related to article &quot;Hypofractionation with simultaneous boost in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy A prospective evaluation of a case series and review of the literature&quot;</p> <p>To evaluate acute toxicity and cosmetic outcomes of hypofractionated simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) as adjuvant treatment after breast-conserving surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy and to review the association of chemotherapy and short fractionation with boost.</p> <p>MATERIALS AND METHODS:</p> <p>Patients presenting early-stage breast cancer were enrolled in a phase II trial. All patients received VMAT-SIB technique to the whole breast and tumor bed in 15 fractions, for a total dose of 40.5 and 48 Gy. Acute and late skin toxicities and breast pain were recorded. Cosmetic outcomes were also assessed as excellent/good or fair/poor.</p> <p>RESULTS:</p> <p>Between August 2010 and December 2015, 787 consecutive patients were treated and had at least 2 year follow-up. A subset of 175 patients underwent adjuvant chemotherapy (median age of 55 years) and was analysed. The median follow up was 39 months (range 24-80). At the end of RT treatment, skin toxicity was G1 in 51.1% of patients, G2 in 9.7%. At 2 years of follow up, it was G1 in 13.5% of patients, no cases &ge; G2; cosmetic outcome was excellent in 63.5% and good in 36.5% of the patients. No significant difference compared to the patients without systemic therapy was observed.</p> <p>CONCLUSION:</p> <p>Hypofractionated VMAT-SIB in patients who had undergone adjuvant systemic therapy was safe and well tolerated in terms of acute and early late settings and cosmesis. Our data confirmed the results of other studies published on the association of hypofractionation and chemotherapy or concomitant boost.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>This record contains raw data related to article &ldquo;Tentorial Notch Meningiomas: Innovative Preoperative Management and Literature Review&quot;</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p><strong>Background: </strong> Tentorial meningiomas account for only 3-6% of all intracranial meningiomas. Among them, tentorial incisura (notch) location must be considered as a subgroup with specific surgical anatomy and indications, morbidity, and mortality. In this study, we propose an update on preoperative management in order to reduce postoperative deficits.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong> We retrospectively collected adult patients treated for incisural meningioma between January 1992 and December 2016 in two different neurosurgical departments. Demographic, clinical, and neuroradiological preoperative and postoperative data were analyzed. In the most recent subgroup of tumors, a preoperative digital simulation was performed to define a volumetric digital quantification of the tumor resection. A review of the pertinent literature has been also done.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong> We included 26 patients. The median age was 58.4 years. Onset neurological signs were cranial nerve deficit in 9 patients, hemiparesis in 7, gait disturbance in 3, and intracranial hypertension in 3 patients. Simpson grade I removal was achieved in 12 patients, II in 10, III in 3, and IV in 1 patient. An overall rate of 23% postoperative complications was observed. The average follow-up duration was 68.5 months. Residual tumor was reported in 8 patients. Five patients underwent gamma knife radiosurgery. In 34.6% of patients, the surgical approach was chosen with preoperative digital planning estimating the potential volume of postoperative residual tumor, the target for radiosurgical treatment.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong> A multidisciplinary approach to plan incisural meningiomas management is important. To lower postoperative morbidity and mortality, a careful preoperative case analysis is useful. A planned residual tumor, supported by preoperative simulation imaging, could be safely treated with radiosurgery.</p>

<p>This record contains raw data related to article &ldquo;Mutation profile and immunoscore signature in thymic carcinomas: An exploratory study and review of the literature&quot;</p> <p><strong>Background: </strong> Significant efforts have been made to investigate the molecular pathways involved in thymic carcinogenesis. However, genetic findings have still not impacted clinical practice. The aim of this exploratory trial was to evaluate the immunoscore and molecular profile of a series of thymic carcinomas (TCs), correlating this data with clinical outcome.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong> Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) TC tissues were retrieved from our center archive. The immunoscore was evaluated according to Angell and Gallon. DNA was extracted from FFPE tumor samples and, when available, from adjacent histologically normal tissues. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed targeting hotspot regions of 50 oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong> A series of 15 TCs were analyzed. After a median follow-up of 82.4 months, the median overall survival was 104.7 months. The immunoscore was &gt;2 in 5/15 patients (33%). Among the investigated genes, absence of mutations was observed in 5/15 patients (33%), whereas three variants in 1/15 (6%) patient, two variants in 4/15 (26%) patients, and one variant in 5/15 patients (33%) were found. The most recurrently mutated genes were FGFR3 (five mutations) and CDKN2A (three mutations, two of which were nonsense). Patients with CDKN2A loss showed a statistically significantly worse survival (P = 0.0013), whereas patients with FGFR3 mutations showed a statistically significantly better survival (P = 0.048).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong> This study adds data to the few existing reports on the mutational landscape of TCs, providing the first comprehensive analysis to date. Here, we confirm the low rate of mutations in TCs and suggest FGFR3 and CDKN2A mutations as intriguing potential therapeutic targets.</p>

What Influences Algorithmic Decision-Making? A Systematic Literature Review on Algorithm Aversion

<p>Abstract</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>With the continuing application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into decision-making, algorithmic decision-making is becoming more efficient, even often outperforming human counterpart. Despite this superior performance, people often consciously or unconsciously display reluctance to rely on algorithms, a phenomenon known as algorithm aversion. Viewed as a behavioral anomaly, algorithm aversion has recently attracted much scholarly attention. With a view to synthesize the findings of this literature, we systematically review 80 empirical studies identified through searching in seven academic databases and performing citation chaining. We map the emergent themes following grounded theory and categorize the influencing factors of algorithm aversion under four main themes: algorithm, individual, task, and high-level. Our analysis reveals that although algorithm and individual factors have been investigated extensively, very little effort has been given to explore the task and high-level factors. We contribute to algorithm aversion literature by proposing a comprehensive framework, highlighting open issues in existing studies, and outlining several research avenues that could be handled in future research. Implications for research and practitioners about the findings of the study are discussed.</p>
