Pottery Green Glaze Fragment

3D model of a fragment of green-glazed ceramic stoneware from the French town, Beauvais. It dates to the 15th-16th centuries. The physical object is stored at the National Museum of Iceland Part of the Skriðuklaustur Monastery 1550 reconstruction. Digitisation by Open Virtual Worlds, a research team within the School of Computer Science, University of St Andrews, in cooperation with the Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute at Skriðuklaustur and the National Museum of Iceland. 3D digitisation was done by Catherine Cassidy and Iain Oliver with archaeological assistance provided by Skúli Gunnarsson. The bottom-most portion of an earthenware "Olive Jar" (aka Botija in Spanish) recovered from the wreck of the Spanish galleon *Santa Clara*, sunk in 1564. The cross-mended piece is 20 centimeters at the widest, and averages between 6.0 and 6.5 millimeters thick. Remnants of a pitch coating that once made the jar impermeable can be seen on the interior face. Additionally, concentric lines on the interior face show the jar was wheel-thrown. "Turk's Head" Pipe Bowl Fragment

This clay tobacco pipe bowl fragment was recovered from an archaeological excavation at Brook Farm conducted in the early 1990s. It is likely part of a human effigy pipe referred to as a "Turk's Head," a style which peaked in popularity between 1820 an 1880. This particular example was recovered from an area of the Brook Farm property which was the site of a dairy farm from approximately 1700-1840. From 1840-1847, the property was occupied by the Brook Farm Association for Education and Agriculture, a utopian community founded by Transcendentalists. This area was the location of a communal building called the Hive. Documentary and archaeological evidence indicates that the original structure burned after the failure of Brook Farm but was rebuilt in the 1850s. It was also the location of Camp Andrew, a Civil War training camp in 1861, and a Lutheran orphanage from 1871-1948. Artifact lot # 94739. Scanned by Nadia Kline. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Kilnaboy - Romanesque Fragment

This fragment is located on the inner doorway of Kilnaboy Church in Co. Clare. The carving has Romanesque features and intidactes an earlier phase to the building of which only a few fragments survice. The carving is possibly unique in Ireland, but has parallels with carving at Killaloe in style. It may be from a doorway or window of the 12th century. It depicts a demonic head biting onto a moulding. Funded by Historic Environment Scotland and Heritage Lottery Fund. **Inchinnan 2 (St Conval), Renfrewshire, cross-shaft fragment.** **Stone type:** Sandstone. **Place of discovery:** NS 4904 6803 **Present location:** Located in a railed shelter outside Inchinnan New Parish Church. **Evidence of discovery:** Recorded by Stuart in the mid 19th century lying in the graveyard. A new church was built in 1900, and the slab was placed on raised plinths outside the church. It was taken to the New Parish Church when the old church was demolished in 1965, and displayed on a brick plinth in a shelter outside the church. Data from: Intraspecific leaf trait variation mediates edge effects on litter decomposition rate in fragmented forests

<p>There is strong trait dependence in species-level responses to environmental change and their cascading effects on ecosystem functioning. However, there is little understanding of whether intraspecific trait variation (ITV) can also be an important mechanism mediating environmental effects on ecosystem functioning. This is surprising, given that global change processes such as habitat fragmentation and the creation of forest edges drive strong trait shifts within species. On 20 islands in the Thousand Island Lake, China, we quantified intraspecific leaf trait shifts of a widely distributed shrub species, <em>Vaccinium carlesii</em>, in response to habitat fragmentation. Using a reciprocal transplant decomposition experiment between forest edge and interior on 11 islands with varying areas, we disentangled the relative effects of intraspecific leaf trait variation vs. altered environmental conditions on leaf decomposition rates in forest fragments. We found strong intraspecific variation in leaf traits in response to edge effects, with a shift towards recalcitrant leaves with low specific leaf area and high leaf dry matter content from forest interior to the edge. Using structural equation modelling, we showed that such intraspecific leaf trait response to habitat fragmentation had translated into significant plant afterlife effects on leaf decomposition, leading to decreased leaf decomposition rates from the forest interior to the edge. Importantly, the effects of intraspecific leaf trait variation were additive to and stronger than the effects from local environmental changes due to edge effects and habitat loss. Our experiment provides the first quantitative study showing that intraspecific leaf trait response to edge effects is an important driver of the decrease in leaf decomposition rate in fragmented forests. By extending the trait-based response-effect framework towards the individual level, intraspecific variation in leaf economics traits can provide the missing functional link between environmental change and ecological processes. These findings suggest an important area for future research on incorporating ITV to understand and predict changes in ecosystem functioning in the context of global change.</p>

<p>We examined whether and how woody debris removal for domestic fuel affects carbon storage and soil properties in an Indian rainforest. Fuelwood removal reduced aboveground carbon stocks, increased soil bulk density, and possibly reduced soil phosphorus stocks. Equitably balancing this subtle trade-off between climate-regulating and vital, widely-utilized provisioning functions, is a challenge for tropical forest research and management.</p>
