Dataset for downscaling, used in downscaled Spatiotemporal Precipitation Model Based on a Transformer Attention Mechanism

<p>In this research, we introduce a novel method leveraging the Transformer architecture to generate high-fidelity precipitation model outputs. This technique emulates the statistical characteristics of high-resolution datasets while substantially lowering computational expenses. The core concept involves utilizing a blend of coarse and fine-grained simulated precipitation data, encompassing diverse spatial resolutions and geospatial distributions, to instruct the neural network in the transformation process. We have crafted an innovative ST-Transformer encoder component that dynamically concentrates on various regions, allocating heightened focus to critical spatial zones or sectors. This tailored module is instrumental in enhancing the model's ability to generate outcomes that are not only more true-to-life but also more consistent with physical laws. It adeptly mirrors the temporal and spatial fluctuations in precipitation data and adeptly represents extreme weather events, such as heavy and enduring storms. The efficacy and superiority of our proposed approach are substantiated through a comparative analysis with several cutting-edge forecasting techniques. This evaluation is conducted on two distinct datasets, each derived from simulations run by regional climate models over a period of four months. The datasets vary in their spatial resolutions, with one featuring a 50-kilometer resolution and the other a 12-kilometer resolution, both sourced from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model.</p>

SUSTAINABLE FINANCING AS A FACTOR INFLUENCING ECO-FRIENDLY BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION: EXISTING CHALLENGES AND POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS

<p>This study underscores the slow adoption of eco-friendly practices, particularly in high-emission sectors ("brown" businesses), and emphasizes the role of sustainable financing in implementation of environmentally sustainable business practices, with a particular interest in such types of corporate financing as sustainability-linked loans and a relatively new type of financing provided to companies with core business falling under eligible green criteria (loans for green businesses). The purpose was to identify existing challenges preventing promotion of these two types of sustainable financing and borrowers&rsquo; sustainable transformation, and propose potential solutions addressing these challenges. The analysis was performed based on a vast literature review. The study revealed the existence of such challenges as borrowers&rsquo; profit-driven motives, lack in regulatory transparency, concerns of financial institutions about their profitability and risk of greenwashing, and insufficient governmental support. To address these challenges, regulatory measures are recommended to incentivize financial institutions to offer reduced interest rates on loans for green business and sustainability-linked loans, with governments compensating such losses through imposing higher taxes on &ldquo;brown&rdquo; businesses. The study also proposes a potential action plan on amending the regulatory framework with the main focus on the need to develop respective changes with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders. It also addresses the need of establishing mandatory criteria for recognizing businesses as green to qualify for green business loans, and obligatory KPIs for each industry outlining clear targets for improving a company's sustainability profile to be eligible for sustainability-linked loans. These obligatory criteria and KPIs may be adjusted by financial institutions depending on aspects being material for the borrower. The borrower&rsquo;s compliance with criteria set for green business loans should be regularly reported and verified by an expert company, similarly to the existing rules for sustainability-linked loans. Further, the study proposes incorporating a regulatory body to oversee compliance of financial institutions with these regulations and introducing penalties for their violations, and performing monitoring and adaptation of a regulatory framework, if necessary. The suggested amendments, being subject to a comprehensive feasibility study, are intended to promote the considered types of sustainable financing and boost transit to eco-friendly business practices.</p>

Data from: Ecological continuity and transformation after the Permo-Triassic mass extinction in northeastern Panthalassa

The Permo-Triassic mass extinction (PTME) is often implicated in the transition from the Paleozoic Evolutionary Fauna (PEF) to the Modern Evolutionary Fauna (MEF). However the exact timing and details of this progression are unknown, especially regarding the vacating and filling of functional ecological space after the PTME. Here we quantify the functional diversity of middle Permian and Early Triassic marine paleocommunities in the western US to determine functional re-organization in the aftermath of the PTME. Results indicate that while the PTME was selective in nature, many new Triassic taxa either re-filled functional roles of extinct Permian taxa or performed the same functional roles as Permian survivors. Despite this functional overlap, Permian survivors and new Triassic taxa differed significantly in their relative abundances within those overlapping functions. This shift in numerical emphasis, driven by an increase in abundance towards more MEF-style traits, may represent a first step in the transition between the PEF and MEF. We therefore suggest that the extreme impact of the PTME had significant and permanent re-organizational effects on the intrinsic structure of marine ecosystems. Early Triassic ecosystems likely bridged the gap between the Paleozoic and Modern Evolutionary Faunas, as newly originated Triassic taxa shared ecospace with Permian survivors, but shifted functional emphasis.

Data from: Swapping birth and death: symmetries and transformations in phylodynamic models

Stochastic birth--death models provide the foundation for studying and simulating evolutionary trees in phylodynamics. A curious feature of such models is that they exhibit fundamental symmetries when the birth and death rates are interchanged. In this paper, we first provide intuitive reasons for these known transformational symmetries. We then show that these transformational symmetries (encoded in algebraic identities) are preserved even when individuals at the present are sampled with some probability. However, these extended symmetries require the death rate parameter to sometimes take a negative value. In the last part of this paper, we describe the relevance of these transformations and their application to computational phylodynamics, particularly to maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods, as well as to model selection.

Data from: Reinvestigation of the type specimen of Ginkgophyllum grasseti Saporta 1875 using Reflectance Transforming Imaging

<p>Reflectance Transforming Imaging (RTI) produces photographs in which the angle of the light can be changed at will, allowing to investigate remotely minute details of the 3D structure of sub-planar objects. Here we apply this technique to the type specimen of <i>Gingkophyllum grasseti</i>, a vegetative shoot with putative ginkgophyte affinities from the early Permian of Lodève (France). <i>Gingkophyllum grasseti</i>, the type species of the corresponding genus, was originally described by Saporta in 1875 and has never been illustrated other than by drawings representing only portions of the shoot. Using RTI, we describe and illustrate the specimen and discuss some key features, such as the arrangement of the leaves on the shoot or the presence of abundant secretory structures. Through a historical account, we show how the lack of illustration led to confusions about the morphology of <i>Ginkgophyllum </i>and we discuss the importance of reinvestigating type specimens of Paleozoic ginkgophyte taxa in order to clarify their taxonomy and better understand their evolutionary history. The sharing of RTI files is one example of approaches that can be further developed to improve remote access to specimens.</p>
