Data from: Non-rhythmic head-direction cells in the parahippocampal region are not constrained by attractor network dynamics
Computational models postulate that HD cells are part of an attractor network integrating angular head turns. This network requires inputs from visual landmarks to anchor the HD signal to the external world. We investigated whether information about HD and visual landmarks is integrated in the medial entorhinal cortex and parasubiculum, resulting in neurons expressing a conjunctive code for HD and visual landmarks. We found that parahippocampal HD cells could be divided into two classes based on their theta-rhythmic activity: non-rhythmic and theta-rhythmic HD cells. Manipulations of the visual landmarks caused tuning curve alterations in most HD cells, with the largest visually driven changes observed in non-rhythmic HD cells. Importantly, the tuning modifications of non-rhythmic HD cells were often non-coherent across cells, refuting the notion that attractor-like dynamics control non-rhythmic HD cells. These findings reveal a new population of non-rhythmic HD cells whose malleable organization is controlled by visual landmarks.

Planets or asteroids? A geochemical method to constrain the masses of White Dwarf pollutants (video)
<p>The PLATO mission will discover a large number of terrestrial exoplanets, providing measurements of their radii. However, to determine whether an exoplanet is ‘Earth-like’, we must also understand its geological composition. The composition of a planet has wide ranging implications for its subsequent evolution and habitability. Ground-based follow-up to the PLATO detections can constrain planet masses and inform our knowledge of planetary interiors. In this talk, I will discuss a complimentary technique that can further improve our understanding of planetary composition and the geology of rocky exoplanets.</p> <p>Polluted white dwarfs which have accreted fragments of rocky objects provide a unique opportunity to probe exoplanetary interiors. These accreted fragments are often rich in either core-like or mantle-like material, which inform us about the core and mantle compositions we can expect to find in exoplanetary bodies.</p> <p>In this talk, I will present an approach to modelling the abundances of non-Earth-like core and mantle compositions observed in polluted white dwarfs. We use data from metal-silicate partitioning experiments to calculate the effect of non-Earth-like conditions on the distribution of elements between the core and the mantle. The resulting non-Earth-like compositions may be useful for interior structure models of exoplanets.</p>
Variational manifolds for ground states and scarred dynamics of blockade-constrained spin models on two and three dimensional lattices
<p>Abstract: We introduce a variational manifold of simple tensor network states for the study of a family of constrained models that describe spin-<span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>1/</span></span></span><span><span><span>2</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> systems as realized by Rydberg atom arrays. Our manifold permits analytical calculation via perturbative expansion of one- and two-point functions in arbitrary spatial dimensions and allows for efficient computation of the matrix elements required for variational energy minimization and variational time evolution in up to three dimensions. We apply this framework to the PXP model on the hypercubic lattice in one, two, and three dimensions and show that, in each case, it exhibits quantum phase transitions breaking the sublattice symmetry in equilibrium, and hosts quantum many-body scars out of equilibrium. We demonstrate that our variational ansatz qualitatively captures all these phenomena and predicts key quantities with an accuracy that increases with the dimensionality of the lattice, and conclude that our method can be interpreted as a generalization of mean-field theory to constrained spin models.</p> <p>Access will be granted upon reasonable request.</p>
