Supporting students in making informed data sharing decisions: from comprehension to consenting
<p>Whether deciding to participate in research or gain access to online applications, studies on consent suggest that individuals often do not read or fail to understand the text outlining the conditions they agree to when giving their consent. Limited comprehension related to the risks of big data and habituation may contribute to consent being given in a manner that counters the best interests of individuals (i.e. a privacy paradox). Are those asking students to use new technologies and share their data ethically responsible for helping students learn to make informed decisions regarding the sharing of their data? As educational technology researchers, we conducted a quasi-experimental study involving 127 undergraduate students in which we explored the effects on study enrollment of supporting students in making informed data sharing decisions. Prior to reading the consent form for a study involving the evaluation of a collaborative learning application, one group of participants was primed to consider data sharing risks whereas the other group was not. The primed group scored lower on a consent form comprehension quiz yet had higher enrollment rates and were more likely to cite trust as reasoning for enrolling in the study.</p> <p>The data set is composed by:</p> <ul> <li>‘Classes’ spreadsheet: including the relation of flows, group of students, number of students, instructor id, day and time</li> <li>‘Participants’ spreadsheet: including the relation of ID (of each participant), if s/he consented, group class, flow and language</li> <li>‘Prior knowledge Survey’ spreadsheet: participant’s ID and ID, relevant prior knowledge questionnaire data (questions included).</li> <li>‘Quiz data’ spreadsheet: participant’s ID, quiz data and survey data (questions included)</li> <li>PDF including: <ul> <li>Table S1. Enhancing consent forms to support participant decision making in multimodal learning research
<p>Advances in the field of multimodal learning research is often accomplished by actively exploring new technologies and techniques related to the collection and analysis of data. However, the exploration of the ethical principles and procedures for governing the usage of the new technologies and techniques is not as eagerly pursued. As multimodal learning data grows in complexity, and to an extent invasiveness, a need is arising to scrutinize the ethical aspects of multimodal learning research. The process of informed consent in multimodal learning research may be an appropriate starting point as the results of bioethical studies suggest that many informed consent processes do not adequately support participant comprehension of the studies they consent to. Studies have shown that enhancing consent forms can improve participant comprehension and contribute to validating the consent received. The following data set include two types of enhanced consent forms: one form is written from a researcher perspective and the other from a participant perspective. Results of the study involving first year undergraduate students suggest that the overall level of comprehension did not differ between conditions. Yet, the participant-oriented consent form had significantly lower rates of enrollment. </p> <p>The data set is composed by:</p> <p>Anonymized Data Sheet: participant responses to the Informed Consent Test for Educational Technology and survey questions</p> <p>Enhanced Consent Forms: Enhanced consent forms for educational technology research for each condition in the study and in both English and Spanish. Form A is written from a research perspective (researcher-oriented) – which is how most forms are written. Form B is written from a participant perspective (participant-oriented).</p> <p> </p>
Data from: Exploring the role of decision support systems in promoting healthier and more sustainable food shopping: a card sorting study
<p>This study aims to identify opportunities and barriers in developing and implementing Food Shopping Support Systems (FSSS) for healthier and more sustainable choices, given the growing consumer demand and persistent societal problems related to food. The study examined the social and technical value of FSSS in an early development stage through one-on-one expert interviews (n=20) and consumer focus groups (4 groups, n=19).</p> <p> </p>
