Socio-economic data for 79 households across four villages in Catimbau National Park, Pernambuco Brazil

<p>The research was funded by the British Council&rsquo;s Newton Fund Institutional Links Program, project 275896277 &lsquo;Advancing equity in Brazilian protected area management&rsquo;. The data was used in the publication of the article &#39;Protected areas and the neglected contribution of Indigenous Peoples and local communities: Struggles for environmental justice in the Caatinga dry forest&#39; published in the journal &#39;People and Nature&#39; in November 2021. This social research was funded specifically to contribute complementary understanding to the Long-Term Ecological Project (LTEP-Catimbau) in Catimbau National Park (https://www.peldcatimbau.org), led by the Federal University of Pernambuco, which explores land-use and climate change. Ethical approval to conduct interviews was obtained from the Ethics Committee in Research from the Federal University of Amap&aacute; (CAAE 82787718.3.0000.0003, Permit number 2.497.655) and the Ethics Committee of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom. Carrying out this research within Catimbau National Park was also authorized by ICMBIO (SISBIO &ndash; Authorization number 60074-1). We selected two Indigenous villages and two non-indigenous villages (determined through self-identification by people within those villages), located within the park from which to randomly select households, and from which to interview an individual over 18 years of age. Using satellite imagery and through discussion with village leaders we identified and numbered all occupied households in the four selected villages within the park and randomly selected 40 households across the two Indigenous communities and 40 across the two non-indigenous communities for semi-structured interviews, the second phase of the research. In total, seventy-nine household-level semi-structured interviews were conducted (one of the 80 selected was inadvertently missed) between April and August 2018, in Portuguese, with two members of the research team present (one male and one female), so that answers could be noted as fully as possible (see Supporting Information to the publication in the journal &#39;People and Nature&#39; for the interview template). Before each interview we explained the research funding, partners, motivations, timeline, processes, ethical approach and potential outputs in detail. We provided the option to decline or to rearrange the time, and obtained verbal consent before starting each interview. Verbal consent was deemed most appropriate due to both the high rate of illiteracy and the degree of land tenure insecurity faced by respondents, which could have caused them unease about signing a written document. Interviews lasted between one and four hours, though the vast majority took between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. Anonymised, quantitative socio-economic data are presented in the adjacent worksheet.</p>

Economic and not ecological variables shape the sparing-sharing trade-off in a mixed cropping landscape

<p>1. The framework of land sparing vs. land sharing provides a useful analytical tool to address the crop-production/biodiversity trade-off. Despite multiple case-studies testing the sparing-sharing trade-off, this framework still lacks the ability to identify the conditions in which sparing, or sharing, would be the preferred strategy for pareto-optimizing both food-production and biodiversity. Under some conditions, ecosystem services may create a positive feedback between biodiversity and crop production, affecting the optimization.</p> <p>2. This study aims to identify the conditions and the relevant variables that determine the preferred land-use strategy in terms of maximizing both biodiversity and food production, while accounting for positive feedback of ecosystem services in this analysis. We used a simulation model with data from a mixed cropping landscape (100 km<sup>2</sup>) covering seven crop types, five taxonomic groups, three biodiversity metrics and 23 bioindicators to explore the variables shaping the biodiversity-production trade-off and ecosystem services underlying it. We explored a continuum of sparing large semi-natural patches to sharing by maintaining uncultivated field margins of varying size.</p> <p>3. Land sparing outperformed land sharing in 62% of the scenarios and it was economically more predictable. The optimization was shaped by costs, associated with crop type, rather than by landscape composition and configuration, biodiversity metric, taxonomic group or bioindicator.</p> <p>4. Landscape configuration and taxonomic group results corroborate the notion that land sharing benefits mainly small organisms, and that the common width of field-margins in many agri-environmental policies (10 m) is not cost-effective compared to land sparing.</p> <p>5. Land sharing was the optimal strategy whenever it resulted in minimal costs, despite contributing little to biodiversity. Yet, when field margins were &gt;20 m wide (small-scale sparing), land sharing maintained higher biodiversity and was at least as cost-effective as sparing.</p> <p>6. <em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Our model highlights the importance of socio-economic variables compared to ecological variables in selecting land-management strategy to pareto-optimize both food production and biodiversity. Considering opportunity costs alongside economic benefits from ecosystem services in various cropping systems may therefore improve the cost-effectiveness of biodiversity conservation policies in agricultural landscapes.</p>

Chimpanzees as ecosystem service providers: Seed dispersal of an economically important plant resource

<p class="Body">Vertebrate-mediated seed dispersal is vital to the maintenance of diversity in tropical ecosystems, and seed-dispersing animals are increasingly thought to provide ecosystem services by dispersing the seeds of plant species utilized by people. However, few studies have demonstrated a link between vertebrate frugivores and plants used by people, thus limiting the generalizability of the seed-disperser-as-ecosystem-service-provider concept. We examined the effectiveness of western chimpanzees (<em>Pan troglodytes verus</em>) as seed dispersers (i.e., their influence on seedling recruitment) of an economically important fruit resource, <em>Saba senegalensis</em>, at the site of Fongoli, a savanna-woodland environment in southeastern Senegal. The fruit from the <em>Saba</em> vine is commonly harvested from the wild by local people and is also an important food item for chimpanzees. We conducted germination experiments on gut-passed seeds alongside non-gut-passed seeds and analyzed the germination success of chimpanzee-dispersed seeds <em>in situ</em>. We also analyzed the effect of habitat type and canopy cover at each seed dispersal site to determine which sites are most suitable for <em>Saba</em> germination. Germination trials showed that chimpanzee gut passage and manual pulp removal increased the likelihood of germination over seeds left intact. Nearly a quarter of chimpanzee-dispersed seeds germinated <em>in situ</em> and <em>Saba</em> seeds were distributed non-randomly throughout Fongoli, with more dispersed seeds found in habitats most suitable for <em>Saba</em> germination. These results suggest that chimpanzees aid in the early stages of <em>Saba</em> recruitment and thus provide an ecosystem service via seed dispersal that may contribute to the well-being of local people.</p>

Data from: Mycorrhizal symbiosis pathway and edaphic fertility frame root economics space among tree species

<p><span>The root economics space (RES) is multidimensional and largely shaped by belowground biotic and abiotic influences. However, how root-fungal symbioses and edaphic fertility drive this complexity remains unclear. </span></p> <p><span>Here, we measured absorptive root traits of 112 tree species in temperate and subtropical forests of China, including traits linked to functional differences between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) hosts. </span></p> <p><span>Our data, from known mycorrhizal tree species, revealed a 'fungal-symbiosis' dimension distinguishing AM from ECM species. This divergence likely resulted from the contrasting mycorrhizal evolutionary development of AM versus ECM associations. Increased root tissue cortical space facilitates AM symbiosis, whereas increased root branching favors ECM symbiosis. Irrespective of mycorrhizal type, a 'root-lifespan' dimension reflecting aspects of root construction cost and defense was controlled by variation in specific root length and root tissue density, which was fully independent of root nitrogen content. Within this function-based RES, we observed a substantial covariation of axes with soil phosphorus and nitrate levels, highlighting the role played by these two axes in nutrient acquisition and conservation. </span></p> <p><span>Overall, our findings demonstrate the importance of</span><span> evolved mycorrhizal symbiosis pathway and edaphic fertility in framing the </span><span>RES</span><span>, and</span> <span>provide theoretical and mechanistic insights into the complexity of root economics.</span></p>

Sex-specific strategies of nutrient resorption associated with leaf economics in Populus euphratica

<p><span>There are differences between sexes in physiological and functional traits and possibly in nutrient resorption, particularly in nutrient-poor environments. However, little is known about the extent of nutrient resorption from fine stems and fine roots, and how nutrient resorption is related to leaf economics in the males and females of dioecious trees.</span></p> <p><span>We investigated nutrient resorption of different organs and explored whether nutrient resorption is associated with nutrient conservation traits of leaves (e.g. leaf thickness, leaf mass per area, LMA) in <em>Populus euphratica</em> females and males in four natural forests along the Tarim River, China.</span></p> <p><span>Both female and male leaves had the highest N resorption efficiency (NRE), then stems and roots last. We found sexual dimorphism in leaf nutrient resorption at Shaya, Luntai, and Yuli forest sites, where <em>P. euphratica</em> males had higher leaf NRE than females, whereas females had a higher leaf P resorption efficiency (PRE). Moreover, the different nutrient resorption strategies were related to leaf economics. <em>P. euphratica</em> males possess a conservation strategy with a higher leaf thickness, LMA, and leaf vein density, which positively correlated with leaf NRE, while females with higher leaf PRE resorbed disproportionately more P for the reproductive investment.</span></p> <p><span><em>P. euphratica</em> males possess a conservation strategy with higher leaf NRE, while females have higher leaf PRE for reproductive investment. Due to sexual spatial segregation across environmental gradients, dioecious plants are especially vulnerable to future climate change. The differences in nutrient uptake and utilization strategies between females and males may result in a situation where one sex is more prone to future climate change than the other one. Such sex-specific nutrient resorption strategies are associated with leaf economics. The present study deepens our understanding of the plant nutrient balance and adaptation strategies under climate change.</span></p>
