<p>BACKGROUND AND AIMS:</p> <p>The role of new psychological factors such as psychopathological patterns and defense mechanisms in the care of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been poorly investigated. We aimed to assess the psychological characteristics and defense mechanisms of IBD patients.</p> <p>METHODS:</p> <p>This was a single-center, observational, cross-sectional study. Consecutive adult IBD patients were enrolled and stratified according to disease activity. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, and validated questionnaires (Symptom Checklist-90-R [SCL-90-R]) for psychological distress, Defense Mechanism Inventory (DMI) for psychological defense mechanisms, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ) for quality of life (QoL) were administered.</p> <p>RESULTS:</p> <p>Two hundred one patients were enrolled: 101 in remission and 100 with active disease. The mean score for IBDQ was below the cutoff level (156.8 ± 37.8), with a significantly greater impairment of QoL in subjects with flares (136.5 vs 177.5, P < 0.001). Lower scores were associated with female gender. No patients had psychological scores above the cutoff for normality. Statistically higher SCL-90-R scores were found in active patients for obsessive-compulsive disorder (P = 0.026), depression (P = 0.013), anxiety (P = 0.013), phobic anxiety (P = 0.002), psychoticism (P = 0.007), global severity index (GSI) (P = 0.005) and positive symptom total (PST) (P = 0.001). A significantly increased probability of higher global indexes was associated with Crohn's disease and disease flares. None of the defensive Defense Mechanism Inventory (DMI) styles resulted above the cutoff in our cohort.</p> <p>CONCLUSIONS:</p> <p>Further data are needed to demonstrate the potential key role of psychological intervention in the therapeutic strategies utilized for IBD patients, and the identification of specific psychological patterns based on the patients profile is necessary to optimize psychological intervention.</p>

PMID: 31292628.</p> <p> </p> <p>This is the abstract:</p> <p><strong>Aims: </strong>The Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an inherited disease associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Often, the genetic cause remains undetected. Perhaps due at least in part because the NaV1.8 protein is expressed more in both the central and peripheral nervous systems than in the heart, the SCN10A gene is not included in diagnostic arrhythmia/sudden death panels in the vast majority of cardiogenetics centres.</p> <p><strong>Methods and results: </strong>Clinical characteristics were assessed in patients harboring either SCN5A or novel SCN10A variants. Genetic testing was performed using Next Generation Sequencing on genomic DNA. Clinical characteristics, including the arrhythmogenic substrate, in BrS patients harboring novel SCN10A variants and SCN5A variants are comparable. Clinical characteristics, including gender, age, personal history of cardiac arrest/syncope, spontaneous BrS electrocardiogram pattern, family history of sudden death, and arrhythmic substrate are not significantly different between probands harboring SCN10A or SCN5A variants.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Future studies are warranted to further characterize the role of these specific SCN10A variants.</p> <p> </p>
Length of hospital stay, Clinical and Therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19
<p>Background: The Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic marked unprecedented on healthcare sector globally with increase demand of hospital beds, intensive care facilities, lifesaving supplies and equipments. This retrospective study of two healthcare centers focuses on length of hospital stay, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19. These parameters help to identify the available resources and to determine the optimum requirements of healthcare units in pandemics.</p> <p>Materials and Methods: The retrospective data was collected between 12<sup>th</sup> of March and 30<sup>th</sup> of Jun 2020 of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirming SARS-COV-2 patients and categorized into mild, moderate, and severe diseased groups based on symptoms and its severity of COVID 19.</p> <p>Results: A total of 843 SARS-COV-2 positive patients were identified for this study, 132 were mild symptomatic cases<em>, </em>168<em>, </em>moderate symptomatic, and 17 were severe symptomatic with mean age of 34.95 ± 15.9 years. The mean length of hospital stay was 16.38, 13.18, 13.72, 9.30, 6.96, 10.86, 5.77 and 7.37 from 1 to 8 treatments consecutively, with 156.327 Chi-square, and 0.000* p-value. Kruskal-Wallis test shows there were significant differences seen between the length of hospital stay among different treatment groups with chi-square (7) = 156.327, with p-value of 0.000(p-value<0.005). Treatment group 1 who were on antiviral had the highest mean no. of hospital stay while treatment group 7 patients who were on no treatments had the lowest stay with mean duration of 5.7days.</p> <p>Conclusion: Length of hospital stay, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19 are crucial indicators of pandemic management.
