The first part of a Mystical Commentary, or rather annotations on single verses of the Koran, following the order of the Sûrahs. The title and the author cannot be ascertained. This MS. is imperfect and mutilated at the beginning. Ends with Sû. 18. Colophon: تمت تمام شد هذا الکتاب الحقائق من تفسیر مسهات (؟). However, this title (as well as that of the following MSS.) seems only to be taken from one of the paragraphs into which the commentary is usually divided; viz., حقائق, لطائف, and الملتقط. The author, who quotes numerous mystical authorities of all times, belongs to a very modern period. Some passages of his work are in Persian. Begins: الادراک و حکی عن الشبلی انه قال. Plainly written. Size 71/2 in. by 5 in.; foll. 294. Nine lines in a page. A Commentary on the 12th Sûrah (سورة یوسف), combined with the legendary history (القصة) of Joseph. It is ascribed to the celebrated GHAZZÂLÎ (d. A. H. 505). Begins (fol. 2v.): تفسیر سورة یوسف و قصة یوسف علیه السلام، و السورة مکیّة باجماعهم و هی مائة واحدی عشرة آیة و الف و ستمائة کلمة و سبعة آلاف و مائة و ستة و ستون حرفا قال المصنف الغزالی (fol.3)فی سبب نزولها قولان.   This is not a real commentary, but rather a kind of homily on the double text aforesaid, illustrating it with moral stories, sentences, poetry, etc. It ends with v. 102. The rest of the Sûrah is given with the Persian Commentary of ḤUSAIN KÂSHIFÎ, introduced by the following words (fol. 288): تمت تفسیر العربی من تصنیف الامام محمد الغزالی رحمه الله تعالی و ما بقی من السورة یفسر من تفسیر حسینی. Ends: تمت قصة یوسف الصدیق علیه السلام بعون الملک العزیز العلام. Written in a large, plain hand. Coloured lines round each page. The first two pages contain a prayer.

Size 101/4 in. by 61/4 in.; foll. 530. Twenty-one lines in a page. A Commentary (ممزوج) on the Koran, entitled سواطع الالهام, by Abu’l-faiḍ b. Mubârak, commonly known by the poetical name of <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr96002485.html">FAIḌÎ</a> (born A. H. 954, at Agra, died A. H. 1004). Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iii. 629; Cat. Lugd. iv. 42; and <a href="http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n82043298/">Sprenger</a> <a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3344757">Cat. MSS Oudh</a>, p. 127. A very curious composition, in which all letters with diacritical points are avoided. The author began it at the suggestion of his father Mubârak (d. A. H. 1001), and having been interrupted in is labours by a political mission in the service of Akbar,2 completed it in A. H. 1002 at Lahore. The preface begins: الله لا اله الّا هو، لا اعلمه ما هو، و ما ادرکه کما هو، احامد المحامد، و محامد الاحامد، لله مصعدًا (مُصْعِدِ .r) لوامع العلم و ملهم سواطع الالهام It is followed by a succession of introductory remarks in two chapters. In the first, which is entitled: السواط الصالح (الصوالح r.) لصىر الكلام ، (الحوامل 1) لاحوال محرّر سواطع الالهام The author gives an account of himself and his family, as well as of the origin and nature of his work. Those names and dates which contain letters with diacritical points are expressed by logogriphs. This chapter is concluded by a poem in praise of the present work. The second chapter (foll. 8-16) treats of general subjects, and is inscribed السواطع اللوامع لعلوم کلام الله العلام، و اسراره الصوالح لصدر المرام. An indifferent copy, written in two hands. It ends in the author’s epilogue, the last leaf being wanting. Coloured lines round each page. Foll. 193-206 are misplaced, and should stand thus: 201-6, 199, 200, 193-198. Jum’ah ‘Arûsî Ḥawîzî, who completed it in A. H. 1065 at Shîrâz, as appears from the following conclusion (fol. 251): تم الجزء الاول من نور الثقلین و اتفق الفراغ منه علی ید مؤلفه العبد الفقیر...عبد علی بن جمعة العروسی الحویزی بدار العلم شیراز...فی المدرسة المبارکة عمرها الله بتعمیر بانیها ..... الخواجة المعظّم و الماجد المکرّم محمد مقیم بن المرحوم المبرود محمد امین الشهیر بالکاشی امدّه الله بالعمر السعید ... و کان ذلک یوم الجمعة السابع و العشرین من شعبان المبارک احد شهور السنة الخامسة بعد الستّین و الالف من هجرة سید الاولین و الآخرین الخ. In the preface, the author speaks as follows on the purpose and principles of his present composition: اما بعد فیقول العبد....انی لما رایت خدمة کتاب الله و المقتبسین من انوار وحی الله سلکوا مسالک مختلفة ..... احببت ان اضیف الی بعض آیات الکتاب المبین، شیا من آثار اهل الذکر المنتجبین، ما یکون مبدیاً بشموس بعض التنزیل، و کاشفًا عن اسرار بعض التاویل، و اما ما نقلت مما ظاهره مخالف لاجماع الطائفة المحقّة فلم اقصد به بیان اعتقاد ولا عمل و انما اوردته لیعلم الناظر المطلع کیف نقل و عمّن نقل لیطلب له من التوجیه ما یخرجه عن ذلک مع انی لم اخل موضعًا من تلک المواضع من نقل ما یضادّه و یکون علیه المعوّل فی الکشف و الابدآ، الخ. He also apologizes for inaccuracies in quoting his two chief authorities, the commentary of ‘Alî b. Ibrâhîm, 1 and the مجمع البیان of Ṭabarsî.2 The whole work is a mere compilation from these and from other Shî’ah books, such as اخبار الرضا, by Ibn Bâbawiah 1 ; تهذیب الاحکام, by Ṭûsî; Ṭabarsî’s 2 کتاب الاحتجاج; کتاب الخصال; معانی الاخبار or بحر الفوائد; and اصول الکافی. The Isnâds are generally reproduced. Beginning: الحمدلله الذی نزل الفرقان علی عبده لیکون للعالمین نذیرًا. The present MS. comprises Sûrahs 1-6. Well written, by Muḥammad (b. ?) H. 982), being the most valued after those of Zamakhsharî and Baiḍâwî, upon which it chiefly depends. It is dedicated to the Turkish Sultan Sulaimân I. See Ḥ. Kh. i. 249; Fleischer, Cat. Dresd. 368; Cat. Lugd. iv. 41. Printed at Bûlâḳ, A. H. 1285. Begins: سبحان من ارسل رسوله بالهدی و دین الحقّ. In two volumes bound together; well written in a small hand; richly ornamented and gilt. The first volume ends with Sû. 12, and has the following colophon: کتبه الفقیر اقل عباد الله الشیخ جمال الدین حافظ ابن الشیخ عبد الملک الحنفی مذهبا السنی عقیدة القادری طریقا الهندی مولدا البغدادی موطنا عفی عنهما. The second volume concludes with the author’s epilogue. Foll. 33-36 are misplaced. Worm-eaten. [Johnson.]

The first part of another Commentary on the Koran by <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80081636.html">Suyûṭî</a>, entitled الدرّ المنثور فی التفسیر المأثور. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iii. 192, and Bibl. Sprenger. 444. This commentary consists entirely of traditions. The author relates in his preface that he abridged it from another work of his called ترجمان القران 1, by omitting the Isnâds, with the sole exception of his own immediate authorities and of the author of each tradition. Accordingly, the explanation of Sû. 1 begins: سورة فاتحة الکتاب و اخرج عبد بن حمید فی تفسیره عن ابرهیم قال سالت الاسود عن فاتحة الکتاب امن القران هی قال نعم. Only the first words of the passages to be explained are given. The present MS. ends with Sû. 5. It is well written and ornamented. Foll. 77-80 and 81-84 should be transposed. Buddam, and signature of the latter, Calcutta, 1787.

A prayer for Muḥammad, styled درود اکبر. </li> </ol> It begins: و اشهد بانّا نشهد ان لا اله الاّ الله وحده, and is preceded by a Persian introduction, اسناد درود اکبر. Plainly written, with all the vowels. It was transcribed by Shaikh Muḥammad عرب, in Rajab, 1084, for Malik Yâḳût Ṣalâbat Khân. The vacant pages between these two pieces are filled with a prayer for Muḥammad, written in a very large hand, and at the foot of the second is a charm, ascribed to ‘Alî, in Persian, written in Shikastah. <ol> <li> Foll. 102-109. A morning prayer. </li> </ol> Beginning: بسم الله علی نفسی و اهلی و مالی اللهم انت ربّی. Well written in a large hand. For the rest of the volume, see Urdû and Persian MSS. A copious Commentary (ممزوج) on the <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4976203">preceding work</a>, entitled مطالع المسرّات بجلاء دلائل الخیرات, by MUḤAMMAD AL-MAHDÎ b. Aḥmad b. ‘Alî b. Yûsuf FÂSÎ Ḳaṣrî (الفاسی لقبا و دارا و محتدا القصری مولدا). Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iii. 235, Cat. Mus. Brit. 78, and Stewart’s Cat. 175, v. Beginning: یقول العبد الفقیر الی الله سبحانه الراجی عفوه و غفرانه The author says in his preface that this is an abridged version of a still more ample commentary which he had written before. Well written. Has the following colophon: قد من الله تعالی و انعم باتمام هذا الشرح الشریف علی ید العبد الضعیف...الفقیر موسی بن الفقیر عبدالله بن الفقیر عطیة بن الفقیر مهنة الخلفاوی بلدا الشافعی مذهبا الرفاعی طریقة .....و کان الفراغ من کتابة هذه النسخة المبارکة یوم الخمیس المبارک ۵ شهر صفر الخیر من شهور سنة الف و مائة و اثنتی عشر من الهجرة النبویة الخ Slightly injured by damp. It begins: و ثبت هنا بخطّ المؤلّف ما نصّه اللهم اغفر لمؤلّفه الخ.

Size 93/4 in. by 5 in.; foll. 378. Twenty-three lines in a page. A copious Commentary on a Religious Manual (اوراد) by “Shihâb al-dîn.” The commentator styles himself ‘ALÎ B. AḤMAD GHÛRÎ (الغوری),1 of خطه کره (?), a disciple of Shaikh Rukn al-dîn, and he entitles his work کنز العباد فی شرح الاوراد . See Ḥ. Kh. v. 254, who identifies the author of the manual with the celebrated ‘Omar Suhrawardî (d. A.H. 632). This work is written in Persian, but the commentary is in Arabic. The latter was compiled from various works in both languages, on rhetoric, lexicography, grammar, and law. The passages to be explained are introduced by قوله. Begins: اعظم المحامد لله العظیم و اکرم الصلوات علی رسوله الکریم اما بعد فان هذا شرح الاوراد للشیخ الاجل الکبیر محیی السنة ماحی البدعة الخ. Well written in two hands; terminating abruptly. The beginning is much injured. Foll. 72 and 73 should be transposed. A defect after fol. 270. Cf. Stewart’s Catal. 176, xi. [Tippu.]   1 The present MS. has الفوری.

Size 10 in. by 53/4 in.; foll. 75. Thirty-one and eighteen lines in a page. An abridgment of the preceding work. It begins: الحمدلله ...فهذا منتخب من مائة الفوائد الفائدة الاولی فی فضل التسمیة قال النبی صلعم کل امر ذی بال الخ, and concludes: تمت الفوائد و الصلوة و العوائد بعون الله الخ. Written partly in a small Nasta’liḳ, and partly in a large Naskh character. The portion in Nasta’liḳ has corrections, and indications of the contents, on the margin. It is on thin paper, and injured in some places. Red lines round the pages. Inscribed منتخب الفوائد by a later hand. [Johnson.]
