Monitoring data for railway bridge KW51 in Leuven, Belgium, before, during, and after retrofitting
<p>This data set is obtained from a monitoring campaign of 15 months on a steel bowstring railway bridge in Leuven, Belgium. In this period, the connections of the diagonals to the bridge deck and the arches were strengthened after the observation of damage. The monitoring consists of measurements of acceleration on the bridge deck and the arches, strain on the bridge deck and the diagonals connecting the bridge deck with the arches, strain on the rails, displacement at the bearings, and temperature and relative humidity. Data is provided for two train passages and six periods of ambient vibration per day. In addition, the evolution of the identified modal characteristics over time is added. The data set is well-suited for the validation of vibration-based structural health monitoring methods, as it includes data for different states of the structure, i.e. before, during, and after the retrofitting. </p>

<p>This Zenodo item contains the dataset of the study: Manca, S. (2020). “Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age".</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Along with advances in communication technology that are making new forms of historical memorialization and education available, social media are researched as valuable tools for supporting forms of digital memory and for engaging students and teachers about historical knowledge and moral education. This study aims to map the current state of Holocaust remembrance and Holocaust education and to identify main topics of research in the two areas. It adopts a mixed-method approach that combines qualitative analysis with bibliometric approaches to review publications that use social media for digital memory and history education about the Holocaust. Results based on 28 publications reveal several research topics and that, despite some common theoretical references, the two subfields mostly rely on separate conceptual backgrounds. While Holocaust remembrance is a well-established research field, there are few studies and a lack of theoretical elaboration about social media use for teaching and learning about the Holocaust.</p>
Mobilisation of data to stakeholder communities: Bridging the research-practice gap using a commercial shellfish species model
<p>Knowledge mobilisation is required to "bridge the gap" between research, policy and practice. This activity is dependent on the amount, richness and quality of the data published. To understand the impact of a changing climate on commercial species, stakeholder communities require better knowledge of their past and current situations. The common cockle (<i>Cerastoderma edule</i>) is an excellent model species for this type of analysis, as it is well-studied due to its cultural, commercial and ecological significance in west Europe. Recently, <i>C. edule</i> harvests have decreased, coinciding with frequent mass mortalities, due to factors such as a changing climate and diseases. In this study, macro and micro level marine historical ecology techniques were used to create datasets on topics including: cockle abundance, spawning duration and harvest levels, as well as the ecological factors impacting those cockle populations. These data were correlated with changing climate and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) index to assess if they are drivers of cockle abundance and harvesting. The analyses identified the key stakeholder communities involved in cockle research and data acquisition. It highlighted that data collection was sporadic and lacking in cross-national/stakeholder community coordination. A major finding was that local variability in cockle populations is influenced by biotic (parasites) and abiotic (temperature, legislation and harvesting) factors, and at a global scale by climate (AMO Index). This comprehensive study provided an insight into the European cockle fishery but also highlights the need to identify the type of data required, the importance of standardised monitoring, and dissemination efforts, taking into account the knowledge, source, and audience. These factors are key elements that will be highly beneficial not only to the cockle stakeholder communities but to other commercial species.</p>
The diverse nature of island isolation and its effect on land-bridge insular faunas
<p><span><span><b>Aim</b> Isolation is a key factor in island biology. It is usually defined as the distance to the geographically nearest mainland, but multiple alternatives exist. We explored how testing different isolation indices affects the inference of isolation effects on faunal characteristics. We focused on land-bridge islands and compared the relationships of multiple spatial and temporal (i.e., through time) isolation indices with community-, population-, and individual-level characteristics (species richness, population density, and body size, respectively). </span></span></p> <p><span><span><b>Location </b>Aegean Sea islands, Greece.</span></span></p> <p><span><span><b>Time period: </b>current.</span></span></p> <p><span><span><b>Taxon </b>Multiple animal taxa.</span></span></p> <p><span><span><b>Methods</b> We estimated 21 isolation indices for 205 islands, and recorded species-richness data for 15 taxa (invertebrates and vertebrates). We obtained body size data for seven lizard species and population density data for three. We explored how well indices predict each characteristic, in each taxon, by conducting a series of OLS regressions (controlling for island area when needed), and a meta-analysis.</span></span></p> <p><span><span><b>Results</b> Isolation was significantly (and negatively) associated with species richness in ten of 15 taxa. It was significantly (and positively) associated with body size in only one of seven species, and was not associated with population density. The effect of isolation on species richness was much weaker than island area, regardless of the index tested. Spatial indices generally outperformed temporal indices, and indices directly related to the mainland outperformed those related mainly to neighbouring islands. No index was universally superior to others, including the distance to the geographically nearest mainland. </span></span></p> <p><span><span><b>Main Conclusions </b>The choice of index can alter our perception of the effects of isolation on biological patterns. The nearly automatic, ubiquitous, use of distance to the geographically nearest mainland misrepresents the complexity of isolation effects. We recommend to simultaneously test multiple indices, that represent different aspects of isolation, to produce more constructive and thorough investigations and avoid imprecise inference.</span></span></p>
Bridge Construction Monitoring using LIDAR for Quantified, Objective Quality-Control Quality-Assurance (QOQCQA)
<p>Transportation infrastructure construction quality control and quality assurance demands construction monitoring by field inspectors. Currently, these inspectors monitor infrastructure by measuring and photographing structures. These tasks allow them to assess any correction decision during construction or to inform about the quality of the construction process for the future. In order to promote and objective decisions obtained during infrastructure construction, the proposed research project developed and implemented a methodology to measure construction progress and compared it with the designed 3D shape, quantifying the difference. This proposed project includes implementation for the development of DOT standards that could be added in near future bridge construction documents. The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) showed a strong interest in this topic. The experience of the PIs on bridge design and construction, field inspection, and LIDAR technology was integrated in order to evaluate the results with impact both in research and in industry. Specifically, the research results outline recommendations about standards for implementation of technology in specifications for NMDOT or other DOTs.</p>

Data from: Bridging the gap: parkour athletes provide new insights into locomotion energetics of arboreal apes
The tree canopy is an energetically challenging environment to traverse. Along with compliant vegetation, gaps in the canopy can prove energetically costly if they force a route-extending detour. Arboreal apes exhibit diverse locomotion strategies, including for gap crossing. Which one they employ in any given scenario may be influenced by the energy costs to do so, which are affected by the details of the immediate environment in combination with their body size. Measuring energetics of arboreal apes is not tractable; thus our knowledge in this area is limited. We devised a novel, custom-made experimental set-up to record the energy expenditure of parkour athletes tree-swaying, jumping and vertical climbing. The latter strategy was vastly more expensive, indicating that when energy economy is the focus arboreal apes will prioritize routes that limit height changes. Whether tree-swaying or jumping was most economical for the athletes depended upon interactions between tree stiffness, the distance to cross, number of tree-sways required and their own mass. Updated analysis of previous interspecific correlations suggests that whether the relative costs to vertical climb are size-invariant across primate species is complicated by details of the climbing context.
Data from: TAPBPR bridges UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase 1 onto MHC class I to provide quality control in the antigen presentation pathway
Recently we revealed that TAPBPR is a peptide exchange catalyst important for optimal peptide selection by MHC class I molecules. Here we asked if any other co-factors associate with TAPBPR which would explain its effect on peptide selection. We identify an interaction between TAPBPR and UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase 1 (UGT1), a folding sensor in the calnexin/calreticulin quality control cycle known to regenerate the Glc1Man9GlcNAc2 moiety on glycoproteins. Our results suggest the formation of a multimeric complex, dependent on a conserved cysteine at position 94 in TAPBPR, in which TAPBPR promotes the association of UGT1 with peptide-receptive class I molecules. We reveal that the interaction between TAPBPR and UGT1 facilities the reglucosylation of the glycan on class I, promoting their recognition by calreticulin. Our results suggest that in addition to being a peptide-editor, TAPBPR improves peptide optimisation by promoting peptide-receptive MHC class I molecules to associate with the peptide-loading complex.
