MAED Data Note: Selected socio-economic and technical demand modelling data for Sierra Leone.
<p>This MAED Data Note contains historic annual data on electricity demand (2018 to 2023) segregated by sector (industry, services, households). Additionally, historic social and economic data on population (total, growth, urban-rural split, household size), GDP (total, sectoral split, growth) and electrification are included within this data note. This historic data can be used to create base year energy intensitities used as a foundation for energy demand modelling using the Model for the Analysis of Energy Demand (MAED) simulation software. Two illustrative scenarios are developed alongside a baseline demand projection from 2018 to 2050. </p> <p>This work was supported by the Climate Compatible Growth Programme (#CCG) of the UK's Foreign Development and Commonwealth Office (FCDO). The views expressed in this paper do not necessarily reflect the UK government's official policies.</p>
Transposase-Assisted Tagmentation: An Economical and Scalable Strategy for Single-Worm Whole-Genome Sequencing (elegans)
<p><span>AlphaMissense identifies 23 million human missense variants as likely pathogenic, but only 0.1% have been clinically classified. To experimentally validate these predictions, chemical mutagenesis presents a rapid, cost-effective method to produce billions of mutations in model organisms.</span><span> </span><span>However, the prohibitive costs and limitations in the throughput of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) technologies, crucial for variant identification, constrain its widespread application. Here, we introduce a Tn5 transposase-assisted tagmentation </span><span>technique</span><span> for conducting WGS in <em>C. elegans</em>, <em>E. coli</em>, <em>S. cervisiae</em>, and <em>C. reinhardtii</em>. This method, demands merely 2</span><span>0 minutes of hands-on time for a single worm or single-cell clones and incurs a cost below 10 US dollars. <span>It effectively pinpoints causal mutations in mutants defective in cilia or neurotransmitter secretion and in mutants synthetically sterile with a variant analogous to the oncogenic BRAF(V600E) mutation. Integrated with chemical mutagenesis, our approach can generate and identify missense variants economically and efficiently, facilitating experimental investigations of missense variants in diverse species.</span></span></p>
Data Archival for Economic Cost Modeling of Chinook Habitat Restoration in the Stillaguamish River Basin
<p>We used geospatial data to model economic cost estimates of habitat restoration in the Stillaguamish River Basin in the Puget Sound. We utilized data pertaining to the streams/rivers, floodplain habitat, subbasins, elevation, distance to roads, demographics, and land use within the Stillaguamish River Basin to do so. Analysis included using the different attributes of the Stillaguamish River Basin to create low and high cost estimates for floodplain, engineered log jam, and riparian planting habitat restoration. We specifically looked at the slope and size of streams, area of habitat that needed to be restored, slopes of the riparian area, distance to nearest road, and canopy angles as our model inputs. We followed cost estimate guidance provided by the Puget Sound Shared Strategy to identify our cost ranges and updated them to todays prices using the producer price index. An additional land use analysis was performed to quantify the total area and cost of potential agricultural land in the basin. Lastly, we investigated the demographics of the region to identify areas of POC and low income in relation to proposed restoration actions.</p>
Effects of European emissions trading on the transformation of primary steelmaking: Assessment of economic and climate impacts in a case study from Germany
<p>Supplementary Information 1: This supporting information provides information on the modeling of material and energy flows for conventional and low-carbon steelmaking in an integrated steel mill. To this end, the production activities (unit processes) are provided. Also, information on the assessment of economic and climate impacts is included.</p> <p>Supplementary Information 2: This supporting information provides information on the main mechanisms of the European emissions trading system. Thereby, a focus is laid on regulations for the free allocation of EU allowances toward companies from the sectors with a high risk of carbon leakage. Additionally, the assessment and optimization models for designing favorable transformation pathways of integrated steel mills are provided. Also, the main assumptions and complementary results are provided.</p>

Coded respondent survey data analysis of the socio-economic status of jasmine growers in Huvina Hadagali
<p><strong>Background:</strong></p> <p>This socio-economic analysis studies the influence of jasmine production on the economic well-being of farmers in Huvina Hadagali, a region known for its high-quality jasmine flowers. The Vijaya Nagara district's Havina Hadagali area is well known throughout the country for its jasmine flower farming. In addition to being referred to as Mallige Nadu, this location is also known as Malligeya Tavaru. The cultivation of the jasmine flower is protected by the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, and this flower has been popular in this region for a substantial amount of time.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong></p> <p>Data was collected from a sample of 364 jasmine growers using a structured questionnaire in Huvina Hadagali, Vijayanagar district. The data focused on different socio-economic factors such as income levels, employment, market access, and agricultural techniques. The study is analysed using IBM SPSS through frequency analysis and 2-step clustering.</p> <p><strong>Result:</strong></p> <p>The results demonstrate that the cultivation of jasmine makes a substantial contribution to the local economy, serving as a main or additional source of income for numerous households. Jasmine farming often contributes 40% of the whole household income, and during peak seasons, it provides significant economic advantages. Nevertheless, the highlighted obstacles were volatile market pricing, pest infestations, and limited access to contemporary farming practices. The study emphasizes the crucial significance of cooperative societies and local marketplaces in stabilising income and offering essential resources and training to farmers.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong></p> <p>The research highlights the necessity of governmental interventions focused on developing market infrastructure, offering financial assistance, and improving access to agricultural innovations to maintain and augment the economic advantages of jasmine cultivation in Huvina Hadagali.</p>

Data from: The spatiotemporal evolution and formation mechanism of the digital economic gap: Based on the case of China
<p>We analyzed the formation mechanism of digital economic gap (DEG), measured the DEGs at four levels (the gaps in information and communication technology accessibility, application skill, digital economic outcome, and efficiency), and explored its spatiotemporal evolution in China by using DEA–Malmquist index method, Gini Coefficent method, Kernel density, and Geodetector. Data from 263 cities in China between 2011 and 2019 were collected. The results demonstrated that (1) The four levels of DEGs showed different trends. The first-, second- and third- level DEGs showed ceiling effects, and the fourth-level DEG oscillated upward. (2) The distribution location of the four levels of DEGs varied. The first- and second-level DEGs shifted at a stable low degree. The third-level DEG increased steadily and polarized. The fourth-level DEG increased steadily and formed a multi-polarization trend, with one strong polar. (3) The long-term transfer trend of the DEGs at four levels changed little, and showed a phenomenon of "club convergence". (4) As for the formation of DEGs, the first-level DEG was influenced by most factors and was education- and policy-driven; the second-level DEG was profit-driven; the third-level DEG was profit- and education-driven; the fourth-level DEG was human resource-driven.</p>
