EDS and XRD analysis of medieval ceramics from Beaupréau-en-Mauges (France)

<p>This dataset contains analyses of 76 ceramic samples from the medieval workshop of Les Landes (Beaupr&eacute;au-en-Mauges, Maine-et-Loire, France). The chemical composition of the samples was obtained by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDS). The mineralogical composition of the samples was studied by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD).</p> <p><strong>Method</strong></p> <p>The outer surfaces of all the samples were mechanically removed prior to analysis.</p> <p><em><strong>EDS</strong></em></p> <p>The samples were heated to 950&deg;C for one hour after 24h drying at 50&deg;C, weighted for LOI calculation and ground in a tungsten carbide mortar. Measurements were made on pelletized powders.</p> <p>The data were collected by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (Oxford INCA 300 spectrometer) coupled with scanning electron microscopy imaging (JEOL JSM 6460LV variable pressure microscope). The measurements were carried out under partial vacuum (20 Pa) with an acceleration voltage of 20 kV. The acquisition time is 90 s per spectrum, over the energy range 0-20 keV. For all EDS spectra, the dead time during acquisition is about 30%, for an average number of hits per spectrum greater than 10<sup>6</sup>. The compositions are calculated from Oxford Instruments standards made of metals, synthetic compounds and natural minerals.</p> <p>Six measurements were carried out on each pellet (the area analyzed during each measurement is approximately 5.10<sup>-2</sup> mm<sup>2</sup>). The results are expressed in mass percentages of oxides and are normalized to 100%. Ten major elements were quantified: Na<sub>2</sub>O, MgO, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, SiO<sub>2</sub>, P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>, K<sub>2</sub>O, CaO, TiO<sub>2</sub>, MnO, Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> (total iron). Although results of elementary composition below 0.5 wt% lack quantitative precision, they are mentioned in the general composition as they hold qualitative information. Values below 0.01% must be considered unreliable.</p> <p>The EDS.csv file contains all the chemical compositions, with the following columns:</p> <ul> <li><em>sample</em>: sample reference.</li> <li><em>analysis</em>: analysis reference (1 to 6 per sample).</li> <li><em>date</em>: date of the analysis.</li> <li><em>laboratory</em>: analysis laboratory.</li> <li><em>fait, stratigraphy, isolat</em>: stratigraphic unit.</li> <li><em>artefact</em>: typology.</li> <li><em>LOI</em>: loss on ignition (percent).</li> <li><em>Na<sub>2</sub>O, MgO, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, SiO<sub>2</sub>, P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>, K<sub>2</sub>O, CaO, TiO<sub>2</sub>, MnO, Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> (total)</em>: oxide mass percents.</li> </ul> <p><em><strong>XRD</strong></em></p> <p>The data were collected with a D8 Advance (Bruker) diffractometer in Bragg-Brentano configuration working at 1.6 kW (40 kV, 40 mA) and equipped with a copper anode source (k<sub>&alpha;1</sub> = 1.5406 ; the k<sub>&beta;</sub> ray being removed by a Ni-filter in the diffracted beam). The tube was equipped with a 0.3&deg; divergence slit and an 8 mm anti-scattering slit was mounted in front of the LynxEye&copy; CCD detector.</p> <p>Data recording was performed from 3&deg; to 70&deg; (2&theta;), in steps of 0.02&deg; with an acquisition time of 2 s, the sample being rotated. The stability of the device was controlled between the different series of measurements by the analysis of a standard (corundum crystal, NIST 1976).</p> <p>The XRD.zip archive contains all diffractograms in the Bruker raw format. The XRD.csv file contains all results expressed in counts, one sample per row, the first line gives the angular position (2 th&ecirc;ta) and the first columns contains the sample code.</p>

A sermon by any other name? The pseudo-Augustinian S. App. 121 and its medieval textual network

<p>The Latin sermons preached by the Fathers of the Early Church &ndash; Augustine, Gregory, Leo &ndash; and their contemporaries had a dynamic and complex medieval afterlife. Throughout the Middle Ages, they circulated in manuscript form, usually as part of collections of patristic preaching. Both the collections and the sermons themselves were heavily manipulated as part of their medieval reception. Additionally, they circulated alongside (and became intertwined with) an enormous corpus of pseudo-epigraphic sermons that were attributed to one of the authoritative Fathers but of which the origin, whether Late-Antique or Medieval, is uncertain.<br> The ERC-funded PASSIM project (2019-2023) aims at charting and analysing the complex interrelations between the manuscripts transmitting patristic sermon collections, and between the texts they contain, through the development of a database and web application. In due course, these digital tools will grant access to the corpus&rsquo; complex research tradition, manuscript transmission and textual relations. In doing so, the PASSIM project strives to open up new research avenues for the study of the reception of Latin patristic sermons in medieval manuscripts. In addition to traditional list views, we aim to include in the PASSIM web application various types of network visualisations, presenting at a glance the manuscript transmission of a sermon, the building blocks of a collection, the spread of author attributions, the popularity of a sermon over time etc.<br> In this paper, we want to focus on network visualisations of textual overlap between sermons. Specifically, we will explore the challenges inherent in creating a serviceable network of a sermon&rsquo;s textual relations that is not dependent upon a full textual analysis of the relevant texts. We want to point the user in the right direction without saying the final word on the subject. As a testcase, we will use the pseudo-Augustinian sermon S. App. 121, an anonymous text derived from various models, which also served as a model for later sermons. Moving from the conceptual to the concrete, our paper will explore the possibilities and challenges of visualisations for networks of texts, contributing as such to the accessibility of the complex corpus of patristic preaching and to the development of the PASSIM database.</p>

Text Reuse in the Medieval Chinese Public Inscriptions (618-907)

<p>It is commonly known that Chinese premodern authors preferred using a number of allusions originating from classics in their own works, which is certainly a way of text reuse. They sometimes quoted original texts directly, while sometimes substituted some characters or inverted grammatical constructions without changing the original meaning. What I want to study in this paper is to find the network of text reuse covering all the public inscriptions, including those inscribed on steles, walls or bells to which the public had access, in the Tang Dynasty China (618-907). A database including more than 1,000 inscriptions with about 1,000,000 Chinese characters / words has been built as the base of this project. Metadata such as authors, dates and places, have been manually added to each inscription. Based on the metadata, temporal and spatial distribution of the inscriptions will be visually displayed. According to my pilot studies, Confucian canons, especially the Five Classics, were quoted most frequently in the inscriptions. Based on close reading experience, history books and religious canons had great influence on medieval Chinese literati&rsquo;s writing as well. So I would like to discover the network which reflects how public inscriptions reused Chinese Confucian classics, prestigious history books, Buddhist and Daoist canons.<br> Beyond finding the network of text reuse, I also want to find out whether one author had preferences to some specific classical allusions, and which books were referred to the most frequently in different periods or places. Besides distant reading, I plan to do close reading of texts to show how genres of texts influenced authors&rsquo; choices of text reuse and how authors&rsquo; writing strategies were influenced by certain political contexts. Ideally, I want to further analyze the intellectual and political history behind the network of text reuse. This research is an experiment on applying digital humanities to Chinese history studies, in which methodological issues will be especially addressed.</p>

<p>This webinar was funded by the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, thanks to the &ldquo;Simon Barton Postgraduate &amp; ECR Conference Prize 2020&rdquo; awarded to Nerea Fern&aacute;ndez Cadenas (https://www.societymedievalmediterranean.com/simon-barton-postgraduate-conference-prize)<br> It has been designed to offer a forum in which scholars can debate and share their experiences about the difficulties and advantages of researching and teaching through Digital Humanities when exploring Medieval Mediterranean History.</p> <p>Moderated by Nerea Fern&aacute;ndez Cadenas , speakers were:<br> <strong>Dr David Natal Villazala: </strong>Lecturer in History at Royal Holloway. His research has focused on the social history of late antiquity, with special attention to the western, Latin-speaking part of the Roman Empire. Related to this subject is his monograph: Fugiamus ergo forum&rsquo;. Ascetismo y poder en Ambrosio de Mil&aacute;n with University of Le&oacute;n in 2010. His current project analyses how a &lsquo;universal&rsquo; late antique Church was constructed despite the end of the Western Roman Empire through GIS software. This project is funded by the ERC-Starting Grant scheme (&euro;1,465,316) and hosted at Royal Holloway, University of London and at the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities (Vienna).<br> <strong>Dr Antonio Blanco Gonz&aacute;lez</strong>: PhD viva 2009, held academic positions at the universities of Durham (UK) as a EU-funded Marie Sklodowska Curie fellow and Valladolid (Spain) as a Juan de la Cierva post-doctoral scholar. He nowadays works as a lecturer with the University of Salamanca (Spain). His interests include social and landscape archaeology and has published widely on these topics in top-ranked international journals.<br> <strong>Dr Evina Steinov&aacute;:</strong> Postdoctoral researcher at the Huygens ING, an institute of the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in Amsterdam. She is the principal investigator of a three-year VENI project Innovating Knowledge dealing with the early medieval manuscripts of the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville, the innovations found in these manuscripts, and the intellectual networks that served as channels for the spreading of these innovations. Her PhD research focused on annotation symbols used in Western manuscripts in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. She published a monograph on this subject, Notam supere studui: The Use of Annotation Symbols in the Early Middle Ages, with Brepols in 2019.<br> This webinar was recorded on 29/09/20.</p>

Functional changes in fortified places: Strategy and defensive architecture in the Medieval and Early Modern Era

<p><strong>Data for Scott Kirk's Doctoral Dissertation.</strong></p> <p><strong>Dissertation Abstract:</strong></p> <p>Defined as fortified elite Houses, castles are a cross-cultural phenomenon, best understood by pairing Niche Construction Theory (NCT) with the Lévi-Straussian concept of the House. NCT can be thought of as a theory of the built environment, thus the material configuration of castles and their placement on the landscape reflect elite socio-cultural requirements. My dissertation asks: How do changes in castle morphology and landscape placement reflect broad shifts in function diachronically and cross-culturally?</p> <p>Wherever elites are militarized, castles typically appear. Similarities in castle design and function are best understood through anthropological frameworks and comparative, interdisciplinary approaches. Using a sample of castles from medieval European, western colonial, and nonwestern societies, I hypothesize that: (1) castle building is a common, cross-cultural behavior, (2) geography and the environment constrain castle location, allowing for a landscape-based typology of castles, and (3) changes in castle placement and design reflect large-scale social competition between elites.</p> <p>These hypotheses contradict much of the current regionally-focused work in castle studies, which are often grounded in national ideologies. Early 20th century studies were more aligned with my hypotheses. Revisiting these earlier investigations, my dissertation uses anthropological theories within an interdisciplinary approach. It combines architectural, statistical, and geospatial analyses to quantitatively test how similar castle placement and co-occurring architectural features are cross-culturally, and how these attributes change over time in relation to elite competition.</p> <p>This research has general and theoretical significance for assessing mechanisms of elite status reinforcement, behavior, and decision-making across space and time. Building a typology that characterizes castles as resource control points, examining how similar architectural features appear in disparate cultures, and exploring social change driven by elite competition, my dissertation takes aim at nationalistic policies by illustrating cross-cultural similarities that are applicable to the modern world in terms of increasing wealth disparities and socioeconomic inequality.</p>

<p><strong>This dataset supports the under-review article "Narratives of religious dissidence in medieval inquisition records: computing the representation and sequencing of crimes in Peter Seila&rsquo;s register of sentences (1241&ndash;2)".</strong><br><br>It is composed of three sheets, containing data derived from <strong>Peter Seila's register of inquisition sentences</strong> (Paris, Biblioth&egrave;que nationale de France, MS Doat 21, fols. 185r&ndash;324r).<br><br><strong>1.
