Nitrogen and phosphorus content of mesquite tree tissues from four habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1986

This data package contains data on measured concentrations of nutrients in mesquite tree tissues collected from four habitat types at the Jornada Basin LTER site. These habitat types include: (1)playa, (2)arroyo,(3)dunes, and (4)grassland and samples were collected in conjunction with phenology studies and natural abundance of N15 sampling during 1986. Leaves, stems, flowers, and pods were collected from mesquite sample tissues and individually digested and analyzed for total nitrogen (Kjeldahl) and total phosphorus. This data set consists of the date of collection, collection site, leaf total nitrogen, stem total nitrogen, flower total nitrogen, pod total nitrogen, leaf total phosphorus, stem total phosphorus, flower total phosphorus, and pod total phosphorus. Data from this study was collected in 1986. Further data was collected in 1987, but had differing attributes and is therefore published in a separate data package (knb-lter-jrn.210386009).

Surface soil nitrogen analyses under mesquite bush canopies and interspaces at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986

This data package contains soil nitrogen data for soils collected under, or near, mesquite at the Jornada Basin LTER site (LTER-I and II) in 1986. The purpose of this study was to analyze nitrogen concentration in soils associated with mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa). The mesquite soils were sampled at 4 habitats - playa, coppice dune, arroyo, and grassland. An ecosystem dominated by the non-legume, Larrea tridentata, and lacking mesquite was included as a reference. Samples were taken from two depths (0-15cm, 15-30cm) for three beneath canopy positions (stem base, mid-canopy, and edge of canopy) and one non-vegetated interzone position for each shrub. Four shrubs were sampled at each site. The soils were analyzed for Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), N03 nitrate, NH4 ammonium. The data set was collected on October 1, 1986 and this study is now complete.

Grassland and mesquite shrubland soil nitrogen mineralization potential from leaching soil incubations at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986

This data package contains data on soil nitrogen mineralization potential in a variety of grass and mesquite habitats during the early years of the Jornada Basin LTER project (I-II). Soil cores were collected from Jornada Experimental Range and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands in May 1986, and observed in a leaching incubation study. The purpose of this study was to measure inorganic soil nitrogen in the context of the shift from grasslands to mesquite dominated ecosystems. Sites include fluff grass (Dasyochloa pulchella), black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda), Sporobolus/Gutierrezia, playa mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa), and arroyo mesquite ecosystem types. Soil samples were collected on May 12-13, 1986 within the clumps of grass or beneath mesquite at each site, generally 20 cm deep or to the hard pan (whichever came first). During the incubation study, inorganic nitrogen leaching was measured for 28 weeks for each sample. This study is complete.

Soil chemical and physical property data for Green Lakes Valley, 1986.

Laboratory analyses were performed on soil samples from the Green Lakes Valley in the City of Boulder Watershed in order to characterize the chemical characteristics of the soil resource. The samples were collected during the 1986 excavations that were required during installation of zero-tension soil solution samplers.

Climate data for C1 data logger (CR21X), 1986 - 2000.

Climatological data were collected from a Niwot Ridge climate station (C1) throughout the year using a Campbell Instruments CR21X data logger. Maximum and minimum values are recorded instantaneously, with the sampling interval being 30 seconds, until 28 January 1999 at which time the sampling interval was changed to 2 seconds. Daily averages and totals were calculated from 2880 individual measurements until 28 January 1999 and 43200 after that date. This instrument was programmed to generate both hourly and daily output. Parameters measured include solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind vector, wind direction, and UVB.

Air temperature and solar radiation data for Arikaree Glacier data logger (DP211), 1986 - 2006.

Climatological data were collected from an upper Green Lakes Valley climate station (Arikaree Glacier) throughout the year using an Omnidata DP211 datapod. This instrument has a sample interval of 5 minutes and records averages of those 5-minute readings every 2 hours. Thus, daily totals represent totals of 288 values. Parameters measured were air temperature (averages) and solar radiation (totals).

Climatological data were collected from a Niwot Ridge climate station (D1) throughout the year using a Campbell Instruments CR21X data logger. Maximum and minimum values arerecorded instantaneously, with the sampling interval being 30 seconds. Daily means and totals are calculated from 2880 individual measurements. This instrument was programmed to generate both hourly and daily output. Parameters measured includesolar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind vector, and wind direction. Desertification/Bureau of Land Managment (BLM) Transects at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1976,1986,1996)

Responses of plant communities to mammalian herbivores vary widely, due to variation in plant species composition, herbivore densities, forage preferences, soils, and climate. In this study, we evaluated simultaneous changes in 11 plant assemblages on the 100,000 ha Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR) in central New Mexico, USA, over a 20-yr period following removal of the major mammalian herbivores (livestock and prairie dogs) in 1972-1975. Thirty study sites were established in 1976 within and outside of the SNWR, and these sites were resampled in 1986 and 1996 using line transect methods. At the landscape scale, repeated measures ANOVA of percentage cover measurements showed no significant overall net changes in total perennial plant basal cover, either with or without herbivores present; however, there was an overall increase in annual forbs and plant litter from 1976 to 1996. At the site scale, significant changes in species composition and dominance were observed both through time and across the SNWR boundary; each plant assemblage exhibited varying degrees of change, with sites dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (black grama grass) being the most dynamic and sites dominated by Scleropogon brevifolius (burro grass) being the most persistent. Species-specific changes also were observed across multiple sites: B. eriopoda cover increased while Gutierrezia sarothrae (a small, short-lived shrub) greatly decreased. The non-uniform, multi-directional changes of the different plant assemblages acted to prevent detection of overall changes in perennial vegetation at the landscape level. Some plant assemblages displayed significant changes after removal of herbivores, while others appeared to respond primarily to climate dynamics. Certain species (e.g., G. sarothrae) that were not preferred by livestock or prairie dogs showed overall declines during drought periods, while other preferred species (e.g., B. eriopoda) exhibited widespread increases during wetter periods
