Data from: Wildfire activity and land use drove 20th-century changes in forest cover in the Colorado front range

Recent shifts in global forest area highlight the importance of understanding the causes and consequences of forest change. To examine the influence of several potential drivers of forest cover change, we used supervised classifications of historical (1938–1940) and contemporary (2015) aerial imagery covering a 2932‐km2 study area in the northern Front Range (NFR) of Colorado and we linked observed changes in forest cover with abiotic factors, land use, and fire history. Forest cover in the NFR demonstrated broad‐scale changes 1938–2015 and overall cover increased 7.8%, but there was notable spatial variability and many sites also experienced Forest Loss. Recent (1978–2015) wildfire was the largest single driver of Forest Loss, with fires burning 14.3% of the total study area. Recently burned areas showed net losses of 36.9% forest cover. Reasons for Forest Gain were more complex, with elevation, past mining density, fire history, and topographic heat load index being the strongest predictors of increases in forest cover. Historical mining activity is one of the dominant anthropogenic impacts in ecosystems in the NFR and it had a complex, non‐linear relationship with 20th‐century changes in forest cover. Subalpine stands originating after stand‐replacing fires circa mid‐1800s to early 1900s showed some of the greatest gains in forest cover, indicative of slow and continuous post‐fire recovery through the 20th century. We also investigated factors such as land ownership, road density, forest management activities, and development intensity, which played detectable, but more minor roles in observed change. Twentieth‐century changes in forest cover throughout the NFR are a result of ecological disturbances and anthropogenic influences operating at varying timescales and overlaid upon variability in the abiotic environment.

Early 20th Century Butter Churn

A butter churn is used to make butter by agitating cream obtained from cow's milk. The "dasher model", seen here, was a popular design favoured by North American settlers. It consists of a container, which holds the cream, and a rod with a wooden x-shaped dasher at the end. This rod is plunged up and down to churn the cream into butter. In this particular churn, the dasher was made out of wood. The barrel is ceramic with a pinkish-gray glaze.<br><br> Note: The model is meant to be viewed in a virtual environment using computer software. Dataset for "Limnological changes in Lake Victoria since the mid‐20th century"

<p>Dataset of light- (Secchi depth, vertical attenuation coefficient, euphotic depth), physico-chemical- (oxygen saturation, water temperature, specific conductivity, pH) and ecological-parameters (inorganic nutrients, particulate organic carbon, particulate nitrogen and phosphorus, Chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton biomass and composition) obtained from samples collected in Lake Victoria, a large lake in East Africa. Samples were collected in 2018-2019 in nearshore and offshore waters (Uganda), during three contrasting seasons: heavy rains (March), low rains (October) and dry (June), which corresponded to distinct water column mixing regimes, respectively, late-stratified, early-stratified and mixed regimes. Sampling was carried out during day light (between 7 am and 6 pm) in shallow nearshore sites (23, 15 and 16 stations for the mixed, early- and late-stratified seasons, respectively) to deeper offshore (7, 8 and 10) sites. At each sampling site we measured light parameters and we carried out vertical profiles (at a depth interval of 10 m, from the lake surface to the lake bottom) of physico-chemical and ecological parameters. SAFARI 2000 Monthly Climatology for the 20th Century (New et al.)

This is a data set of mean monthly surface climate data over Southern Africa for nearly all of the twentieth century. The data set is gridded at 0.5 degree latitude/longitude resolution and includes seven variables: precipitation, mean temperature, diurnal temperature range, wet-day frequency, vapour pressure, cloud cover, and ground-frost frequency. All variables have mean monthly values for the period 1901-1995, several have data as recent as 1998, and more data will be added by the data originators. In constructing the monthly grids the authors used an anomaly approach which attempts to maximize station data in space and time (New et al., 2000). In this technique, grids of monthly historic anomalies are derived relative to a standard normal period. Station measurement data for the years 1961-1990, extracted from the monthly data holdings of the Climatic Research Unit and the Global Historic Climatology Network (GHCN), served as the normal period (New et al., 1999). The anomaly grids were then combined with high-resolution mean monthly climatology to arrive at fields of estimated historical monthly surface climate. Data users are encouraged to see the companion file New et al. (2000) for a complete description of this technique and potential applications and limitations of the data set.
