IODP Expedition 396 RGB channels (calculated from core photos)
<p>Red, green, and blue pixel data were extracted from Section Half Imaging Logger (SHIL) linescan images, typically binned at 0.5 cm resolution using the central 2 cm of the image.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Core orientation
<p>Core orientation data were measured downhole during advanced piston corer (APC) coring, either by Minex FlexIT or Icefield MI-5 core orientation tool. These tools measure magnetic strength and orientation, 3-axis accelerometer data, and tool temperature data.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Natural gamma radiation
<p>Natural gamma radiation (NGR) data in the ~0.1 to 3.0 MeV range were measured using eight custom-designed sodium iodide (thallium) [NaI(Tl)] detectors arranged along the core measurement axis at 20 cm intervals. The NGR system uses layers of passive shielding (lead) and active shielding (plastic scintillators and coincidence electronics) to reduce the cosmic-ray signal for low-count analysis of sediment core sections and to obtain the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. Data are reported on a total counts per second basis and the raw spectral files are available as compressed files for later analysis.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Scanning electron microscope images
<p>Microscopic images of discrete samples were acquired using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and captured as image files. These files were uploaded along with a brief description and a record of the microscopic conditions when the image was taken.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Whole-round core section composite 360 degree images
<p>Images of the outside of hard rock whole-round sections were acquired using a linescan imager (Section Half Imaging Logger [SHIL]) and a special holder that allows each 90 degree segment of the outer surface to be positioned properly. The images were taken at a resolution of 20 lines/mm (50 micropixels). JRSO staff take these quadrant images and compile them into a side-by-side rollout photograph of the section. Composite images are available as both JPG and TIF image formats. Individual quadrant images are available as JPG images only through this report; contact the <a href="mailto:database@iodp.tamu.edu">IODP-JRSO Data Librarian</a> if quadrant TIF files (~160 MB) are needed.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Spectrophotometry
<p>Interstitial water constitutents were measured by UV-VIS spectrometry using colorimetric methods (e.g., ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silica, and sulfide) by an Agilent CARY 100 UV-VIS spectrophotometer.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Laser height profile (section half)
<p>Height profile data were measured on the Section Half Multisensor Logger (SHMSL) by a rangefinding laser and recorded in uncorrected height units in millimeters in CSV files.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 P-wave velocity caliper (section/discrete)
<p>P-wave velocity data were measured on undisturbed section halves (JRSO-defined x-axis) and/or discrete cube and cylinder samples (x, y, or z-axis) using pairs of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a caliper system. IODP Expedition 396 Magnetic remanence (SRM-longcore)
<p>Magnetic remanence was measured on section halves (and rarely on whole-round sections) using a 2G Enterprises 760R cryogenic magnetometer, first as natural remanent magnetization (NRM) and then after demagnetization steps were performed on the samples by alternating field (AF) demagnetizer coils mounted in-line within the instrument.</p>

IODP Expedition 396 X-ray diffraction (XRD)
<p>X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to identify minerals and their proportions in sediment or hard rock sample powders on a Bruker AXS D4 Endeavor X-ray diffractometer. Results are returned as diffractograms in a viewable format (either PDF or PNG).</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Moisture and Density
<p>Moisture and density (MAD) data were acquired on ~10 mL sediment or rock samples by measuring three out of four material parameters: wet (saturated) mass, wet volume, dry mass, and/or dry volume after 24 h drying in a convection oven at 105 degrees C. From the moisture and volume measurements, the following phase relationships are calculated: wet and dry water content, wet bulk density, dry bulk density, grain density, porosity, and void ratio. The combination of measurements is defined by the submethod chosen: A, B, C, or D. Wet (A, B, or C) and dry (A, B, C, or D) mass is determined using motion-compensated balances. Wet volume is determined either by helium pycnometry (A) or by the sample's geometric dimensions using calipers (A or D). Dry volume (C or D) is measured by helium pycnometry. Submethods A and B are not recommended by IODP. Submethod C is suitable for saturated materials such as fine-grained sediments. Submethod D is suitable for unsaturated porous material such as certain limestones and basalts.</p>

IODP Expedition 396 Color reflectance
<p>Color reflectance data were measured on section halves using an integration sphere and a UV-VIS spectrophotometer mounted on the Section Half Multisensor Logger (SHMSL). Spectral counts are recorded in the range of 380 to 700 nm, covering the visible spectrum, and binned in ~2 nm bins. Spectral data are reduced from spectra and recorded in tristimulus XYZ values, CieLAB L*a*b* values, and other units.</p>

IODP Expedition 396 Thermal conductivity
<p>Thermal conductivity was measured using the heated needle method in either full-space needle configuration (soft/saturated sediments) or half-space needle configuration (harder materials) of a TeKa Berlin TK-04 thermal conductivity meter. Heat is applied to the sample and then thermal equilibrium is sought. The heating and equilibration curve is reduced to derive the thermal conductivity value. Raw data are stored if a user wishes to do off-line or postexpedition reduction.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF)
<p>Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) is a rapid, non-destructive technique for determining qualitative and quantitative changes in chemical composition. Aboard the JOIDES Resolution, pXRF is used for measuring points on section halves, rock pieces, and sometimes powders. Spots are typically irradiated at multiple conditions to excite and measure a wide range of elements. The peak intensity changes (we do not provide concentrations) are then used to help recognize and define major chemo-stratigraphic units without the need for destructive sampling.</p>
IODP Expedition 396 Source rock analyzer (SRA)
<p>SRA is run for the purpose of safety monitoring and yields information about thermal maturation and source of hydrocarbons, as well as petroleum potential, in the sediment or rocks at a drilled site. Samples are heated in a pyrolysis oven in an inert atmosphere to quantitatively and selectively determine free hydrocarbons contained in the sample and the hydrogen- and oxygen-containing compounds that are volatilized during the cracking of unextractable organic matter in the sample (kerogen).</p>
IODP Expedition 396 X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
<p>Elemental peak intensities in section halves were measured by an Avaatech X-ray fluorescence (XRF) Core Scanner postexpedition. Each measurement position may be measured at multiple XRF conditions in order to excite and measure specific ranges of elements (e.g., 10 kV and no filter for light elements). Peak intensity changes (concentrations not provided) are then used to help recognize and define major chemostratigraphic units without the need for destructive sampling. Data are presented in comma-delimited (CSV) files by section and by energy/instrumental conditions.</p>
