AGNfitter-rx: Modelling the radio-to-X-ray SEDs of AGNs (Appendix)

The folder contains the highest-likelihood SED fittings of 28 local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) obtained by applying AGNfitter-rx with diverse emission models. AGNfitter-rx is a publicly available Bayesian code, which models the broad-band photometry covering the radio, infrared (IR), optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray bands consistently, using a combination of theoretical and semi-empirical models of the AGN and host galaxy emission.

The yellow and green solid curves in the plots show the emission from the stellar population and cold dust of the galaxy, respectively. Purple, dark blue and light blue solid curves show the torus, accretion disk, and radio AGN emission models, respectively. 10 models constructed from combinations of parameters randomly selected from the posterior PDFs (called realizations) are plotted as a shaded area and the residuals of each fit realization are presented in the subplot below each source. A flexible energy balance prior was assumed so that the cold dust IR emission is at least comparable to the dust-absorbed stellar emission. Also the photometric input catalog is included as a txt file.

The physical interpretation of the inferred parameters and a discussion of the model comparison is described in an associated publication, available at https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.12111 (Martinez-Ramirez et al. 2024, accepted to A&A)

Exploring the halo occupation of AGN using dark-matter cosmological simulations

A semi-empirical model is presented that describes the distribution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on the cosmic web. It populates dark-matter halos in N-body simulations (MultiDark) with galaxy stellar masses using empirical relations based on abundance matching techniques, and then paints accretion events on these galaxies using state-of-the-art measurements of the AGN occupation of galaxies. The explicit assumption is that the large-scale distribution of AGN is independent of the physics of black-hole fueling. The model is shown to be consistent with current measurements of the two-point correlation function of AGN samples. It is then used to make inferences on the halo occupation of the AGN population. Mock AGN are found in halos with a broad distribution of masses with a mode of $\approx 10^{12}\,h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$ and a tail extending to cluster-size halos. The clustering properties of the model AGN depend only weakly on accretion luminosity and redshift. The fraction of satellite AGN in the model increases steeply toward more massive halos, in contrast with some recent observational results. This discrepancy, if confirmed, could point to a dependence of the halo occupation of AGN on the physics of black-hole fueling.

POSITIVE AGN FEEDBACK AT HUNDREDS OF KPC SCALES IN A PROTOCLUSTER AT Z=1.7

High-z protoclusters are ideal laboratories to investigate the relation between AGN feedback, ICM heating, and galaxy evolution at the peak formation epoch of galaxy clusters.

We will present multi-band observations of a z=1.7 protocluster assembling around an FRII radio-galaxy that provide strong insight into the above processes.

A deep (0.5 Ms) Chandra look at the system revealed several spots of diffuse X-ray emission, the most prominent of which (bubble A) overlaps with the Eastern radio lobe. We will discuss thermal emission or Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons (IC-CMB) as viable mechanisms to produce the observed X-ray spots, and present new LOFAR observations suggesting that bubble A is due to IC-CMB. In addition, the expanding plasma in the Western radio-jet and lobe likely shock-heats pockets of gas in the inhomogeneous ambient medium to the ~keV temperature observed in the other X-ray spots.

Bubble A is surrounded by the four galaxies with the largest specific star formation rates among all protocluster members. This calls for remarkable, positive AGN feedback produced hundreds of kpc away from the FRII nucleus by the expanding bubble.

We will discuss future observations of the system and finally present prospects for future population studies of similar, high-z protoclusters with the Survey and Time-domain Astrophysical Research eXplorer (STAR-X), a Medium Explorer mission selected by NASA for Phase A study.

AGN Feedback in the Survey era: Insights into large samples of Clusters and Groups through LOFAR, MeerKAT and eROSITA

In the last two decades, significant improvements have been made in the understanding of how AGN feedback operates in galaxy clusters. However, the vast majority of these studies involved observations of small samples, mostly lying in the high mass (M> 5 x 10^14 Msun) regime. We will present recent works in which we make use of survey observations performed by VLA, LOFAR and MeerKAT in the radio band, as well as eROSITA, Chandra and XMM-Newton in the X-rays, to investigate AGN feedback on the macro scale in large (N>200) samples of galaxy clusters and groups, down to masses of 2 x 10^13 Msun. We find a close relation between the X-ray emission -estimated within the whole cluster/group extent- and the radio emission produced by the central AGN. Statistical tests show that this correlation is not dominated by biases or selection effects. After converting the radio power into kinetic luminosity, we find an even tighter relation which seemingly exists for both disturbed and relaxed objects. Exploiting a subsample composed by COSMOS spectroscopic galaxy members, we find that Brightest Cluster Galaxies hosting strong AGN radio emission always lie within 0.2 virial radii from the cluster centre, and that there is an higher probability of stronger AGN being hosted in more massive systems. All these observations support the picture of a strong connection between the ICM and radio galaxies hosted in BCGs, which is also predicted by Chaotic Cold Accretion (CCA) models.
