Galaxy Arm
<p>Honourable mention in the 2022 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Still images of celestial patterns.</p> <p> </p> <p>Taken from the south of Iraq in January 2022, this image shows a clear sky over one of the many ancient monuments in the region which looks like a Babylonian ziggurat. The Sumerians had invented these mountain-like buildings even before the invention of script; the earliest ziggurats appear around 4000 years before the common era. They look like the frustum of a pyramid and in Babylonian times often had temples on top. Next to the stairs of the ziggurat are the constellations of the southernmost part of the Zodiac, also invented in Babylon. Today, we call them Capricorn (left, with a planet in it) and Sagittarius, whose brightest stars form the asterism of the Teapot. For the Babylonians, Sagittarius was the god Pabilsang, the city god of Larak and a god of agriculture and war. He was also the husband of the mighty goddess of medicine, Gula, and his iconography is a hybrid creature holding a bow and arrow: a male human torso and head attached to the body of a horse with four legs, two gigantic wings and two tails — a horse tail and a scorpion tail. Such a creature did not exist in Greek mythology, so the Greeks reduced it to something they knew, a centaur holding a bow and arrow. This picture still did not make sense in Greek culture because centaurs were considered wild and cruel, and not intelligent enough to use a bow and arrow. Therefore, there was another Greek figure that existed simultaneously: a man with hooves instead of feet at the ends of his legs, a satyr, but this figure vanished in Roman times. </p> <p>Capricornus is one of the most stable foreign creatures in the Zodiac and has been unchanged over millennia. It is depicted as a hybrid creature with the front part of a goat and the back part of a fish. This so-called Goat-Fish constellation has been recognised since the earliest writings of astronomy in Babylon. In Babylonian religion it is a good-natured, benevolent demon that protects humans, supports all healing processes and accompanies the god of wisdom and witchcraft. The Greeks simply adopted it and invented a saga for it. In Roman times, it became tremendously famous because emperor Augustus of Rome used it as his personal symbol, also imprinting it on coins and other political propaganda tools.</p> <p>In Sagittarius, there is also the bright bulge of the Milky Way. That this is hardly visible in this photograph is a result of modern civilization; the huge number of artificial lights that we use on Earth also illuminates the night sky and makes it impossible to see the Milky Way in areas where humans live.</p> <p>Credit: Ruqayah Mohammed/IAU OAE (<a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode">CC BY 4.0</a>)</p>

Armed to the teeth: Supplementary material, R code, Rdata, mesh, landmarks
<p>The structure, composition, and shape of teeth have been related to dietary specialization in many vertebrate species, but comparative studies on snakes' teeth are lacking. Yet, snakes have diverse dietary habits that may impact the shape of their teeth. We hypothesize that prey properties, such as hardness and shape, as well as feeding behavior, such as aquatic or arboreal predation, or holding vigorous prey, impose constraints on the evolution of tooth shape in snakes. We compared the morphology of the dentary teeth of 63 species that cover the phylogenetic and dietary diversity of snakes, using 3D geometric morphometrics and linear measurements. Our results show that prey hardness, foraging substrate, and the main foraging mechanical challenge are important drivers of tooth shape, size, and curvature. Overall, long, slender, curved teeth with a thin layer of hard tissue are observed in species that need to maintain a grip on their prey. Short, stout, less curved teeth are associated with species that undergo high or repeated loads. Our study demonstrates the diversity of tooth morphology in snakes and the need to investigate its underlying functional implications to better understand the evolution of teeth in vertebrates.</p>

Research on stress release for gob-side roadway using roof-cutting technology with chainsaw arm
The narrow pillar mining technology is usually adopted for workface in coal mines. However, in case of overlying hard roof, a suspended triangle roof palte or a cantilever will be formed near the goaf. At this point, the coal pillars will be extruded and serious deformation for gob-side roadway will occur. In order to solve the problem, the roof-cutting technology with chainsaw arm and its equipment has been developed. In this paper, the deformation and failure characteristics of 2312 roadway near the goaf of 2311 working face in Tashan Coal Mine were firstly analyzed. So, the roof-cutting technology with chainsaw arm was applied in 2311 roadway. Next, the roof-cutting process and the load acted on the coal pillar were discussed and analyzed. Then, the numerical model was established to analyze the stress releasing effects. Moreover, the roof-cutting height and the support parameters of the roadway were optimized. The numerical analysis manifested that the roof cutting was the most effective when the roof-cutting height was 6.4 m. And after roof cutting, the vertical stresses of the coal pillars decreased by about 25.0%. Finally, the roof-cutting experiment was carried out in 2311 roadway in Tashan Coal Mine. The on-site roof-cutting depth was 6.4 m and the roof-cutting width was 42 mm. To verify the stress releasing effects, the borehole stressmeters were applied to monitor the peak advanceing stresses of narrow pillars at various depths. The measured results indicated that the peak advanceing stresses decreased by 22.8% on average and thus achieved the roof cutting and stress releasing effects.
Genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity in circadian rhythms of an armed beetle, Gnatocerus cornutus (Tenebrionidae)
<p>Circadian rhythms, their free-running periods and strength of the rhythm are often used as indicators of biological clocks, and there is evidence that the free-running periods of circadian rhythm are not affected by environmental factors like temperature. However, there are few studies of environmental effects on the power of rhythms and it is not clear if temperature compensation is universal. Additionally, genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity in biological clocks are important for understanding the evolution of biological rhythm, but genetic and plastic effects are rarely investigated. Here, we used 18 isofemale lines (genotypes) of <i>Gnatocerus cornutus</i> to assess rhythms of locomotor activity, while also testing for temperature effects. We found that total activity and power of circadian rhythm were affected by interactions between sex and genotype or sex, genotype and temperature, so that while males tended to be more active and showed greater increases in activity, this effect varied across both genotypes and temperatures. The period of activity only varied by genotype and was thus independent of temperature. The complicated genotype-sex-environment interactions we recorded stress the importance of investigating circadian activity in more integrated ways.</p>
Data from: Area 2 of primary somatosensory cortex encodes kinematics of the whole arm
<p>Proprioception, the sense of body position, movement, and associated forces, remains poorly understood, despite its critical role in movement. Most studies of area 2, a proprioceptive area of somatosensory cortex, have simply compared neurons' activities to the movement of the hand through space. By using motion tracking, we sought to elaborate this relationship by characterizing how area 2 activity relates to whole arm movements. We found that a whole-arm model, unlike classic models, successfully predicted how features of neural activity changed as monkeys reached to targets in two workspaces. However, when we then evaluated this whole-arm model across active and passive movements, we found that many neurons did not consistently represent the whole arm over both conditions. These results suggest that 1) neural activity in area 2 includes representation of the whole arm during reaching and 2) many of these neurons represented limb state differently during active and passive movements.</p>
