Why did the chicken NOT cross the road? Anthropogenic development influences the movement of a grassland bird

<p>Movement and selection are inherently linked behaviors that form the foundation of a species space-use patterns. Anthropogenic development in natural ecosystems can result in a variety of behavioral responses that can involve changes in either movement (speed or direction of travel) or selection (resources used) behaviors which in turn may cause differential population level consequences including loss of landscape level connectivity. Understanding how a species alters these different behaviors in response to human activity is essential for effective conservation. In this study, we investigated the effects of anthropogenic development such as roads, power lines and oil wells on the greater prairie-chicken (Typanuchus cupido) in the post-nesting and nonbreeding season. Our first objective was to assess if greater prairie-chickens alter their movement behaviors or their selection patterns when encountering oil wells, power lines, or roads using integrated step selection analysis (iSSA). Our second objective was to determine if prairie-chickens avoided crossing linear features such as roads or power lines by comparing the number of crossing events in greater prairie-chicken movement tracks to the number of movements that crossed these features in simulated movement tracks. Based on the iSSA analysis, we found that greater prairie-chickens avoided oil wells, power lines, and roads in both seasons, but found little evidence for changes in speed or direction of movement at the population-level. However, at the individual level we observed individuals using a number of strategies near development including avoidance and increased rates of movements. Furthermore, prairie-chickens traveled across roads and power lines at much lower rates than expected. Consistent avoidance of development resulted in indirect habitat loss for greater prairie-chickens. These behaviors also resulted in a potential loss of landscape connectivity for this species. By considering both movement and selection we were able to develop an ecological understanding of how increasing human activity may influence the space-use of this species of conservation concern. This research provides insight into the decision-making process by animals when they encounter anthropogenic development by considering multiple behavioral responses. --</p>

Rapid shoaling of Aragonite Saturation Horizon (ASH) in the Indian Ocean: Influence of accumulation of anthropogenic CO2 and atmospheric pollutants

<p>This data set contains the various cruise data of Aragonite saturation depth in the Northern Indian Ocean.&nbsp;</p> <p>The shallowest aragonite saturation horizon (ASH) was observed in the Bay of Bengal (BoB; 219&plusmn;10 m) within the tropical Indian Ocean. The ASH shoaled at the rate of 6.3&plusmn;5 and 4.4&plusmn;3 m y<sup>-1</sup> in the past two and half decades in the BoB and Arabian Sea respectively. As a result, an increase in total alkalinity (TA) was observed at the rate of 0.5&plusmn;0.3 and 0.25&plusmn;0.2 mmol kg<sup>-1</sup> y<sup>-1</sup> at the depth of ASH in the BoB, and Arabian Sea respectively. The rapid shoaling of ASH in the BoB than the Arabian Sea may result from the higher accumulation of anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> due to the freshening of the upper ocean associated with an increase in river discharge/ precipitation and deposition of atmospheric pollutants leading to corrosion of the aragonite skeletal material. Under a business-as-usual scenario, aragonite-secreting organisms may not survive by the middle of this century in the BoB.</p>

Sources and molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal rivers have been tightly linked with its reactivity and fate, thus influencing element and nutrient cycling. The DOM in coastal rivers is usually sourced from both terrestrial and marine inputs, with further complication by anthropogenic activities, which is less understood in coastal rivers located near populated industrial regions. In this study, DOM in a typical anthropogenically influenced coastal river, Daliao River, was analyzed for optical analyses and for molecular composition via Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to give a better scope of composition and sources of DOM. The DOM was enriched in autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs at upstream sites according to high chlorophyll a concentrations, strong protein-like fluorescence, and nonoxygen heteroatomic CHOS formulae (19–24% by relative peak intensity) detected by FT-ICR MS analysis. A series of surfactant-like formulae, indicative of wastewater inputs, were identified and showed a decreasing trend from upstream to the river mouth. Compared with large world rivers, the DOM of Daliao River is characterized by higher abundances of heteroatomic (excluding O) formulae and molecular lability, which is likely caused by strong autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs. In general, we demonstrate that in addition to optical properties, the molecular composition can assess the specific anthropogenic imprints and molecular lability of DOM, which is essential for constraining sources and identifying processes during the transit of DOM from the river to estuary with increasing urbanization and industrialization.
