Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON Darwin Core Archive: Nearshore kelp forest integrated quad and swath cover, 1980-ongoing

The Santa Barbara Channel Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (SBCMBON) tracks long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This dataset contains counts of algae and invertebrates (both sessile and mobile) by integrating data from four contributing projects working in the kelp forests of the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. The four contributing projects are two research projects: The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER) and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), the kelp forest monitoring program of the Santa Barbara Channel National Park, and the San Nicolas Island monitoring program supported by USGS. Together, these projects have recorded data for more than 200 species at approximately 100 sites on both the mainland coast and on the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Sampling began in 1982 and is ongoing. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. The data table documents the number of organisms and the area over which that number was counted for calculation of areal abundance. This study began in 2000 in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. The abundance and size of all taxa of resident kelp forest fish encountered along permanent transects are recorded at nine reef sites located along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel and at two sites on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. These sites reflect several oceanographic regimes in the channel and vary in distance from sources of terrestrial runoff. In these surveys, fish were counted in either a 40x2m benthic quadrat, or in the water parcel 0-2m off the bottom over the same area. The two tables in this data package include: 1) The annual benthic fish community survey which was conducted on 11 reefs once a year around late July or early August; and 2) The monthly fish survey which was conducted once a month at a subset of the sites (3 of the annual sites) The time period of data collection for the annual benthic fish community survey varied among the 11 kelp forest sites. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This study is a survey of the density of tall shrubs, saplings, and seedlings at Bonanza Creek LTER Control Plots. Densities have been measured at some sites since 1975 while others began in the mid 1980's. In 2006 methodology was changed in attempt to better capture the spatial variability of shrub and tree species within the research sites. The current method, presented here, uses a 2 meter wide transect along two site boundaries covering 220m2. All seedlings, saplings, and tall shrubs >1m (regardless of species) are counted by species and size class along the transect. The previous method used 4m2 circular plots at 20 points on a 10mx10m grid within the control plot for an area of 80m2. The circular method measured all seedlings, saplings, and a certain set of "tall shrubs", regardless of height. The height requirement creates an issue when comparing the old and new methods for early successional stands. For Alnus and Salix this is likely only a problem in the FP0 sites as they are the only sites with a high density of shrubs shorter than 1m. Shrub community changes at these early successional sites should be analyzed using percent cover data. At the later successional sites most Alnus and Salix shrubs are greater than 1m so the transect method likely does not underrepresent density. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Taxon-specific relationships between size and mass were applied to field measurements of species abundance to estimate biomass density of each species. California Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Alert Program Data (Darwin Core Archive format)

The Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Alert Program (HABMAP) was formed in 2008 and provides updates on current algal blooms and facilitates information exchange among scientists, federal and state managers, and the general public in California. A major component of this program is regional HAB monitoring with support from the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS) and the Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS). Water samples and net tows are collected once per week at piers to monitor for HAB species, the neurotoxin domoic acid, and water quality data including temperature, chlorophyll-a, and nutrients. The sampling stations represented in this dataset include Santa Cruz Wharf, Monterey Wharf, Cal Poly Pier, Stearns Wharf, Santa Monica Pier, Newport Beach Pier, and Scripps Pier. Microbial communities in the coastal Arctic Ocean experience extreme variability in organic matter and inorganic nutrients driven by seasonal shifts in sea ice extent and freshwater inputs. Lagoons border more than half of the Beaufort Sea coast and provide important habitats for migratory fish and seabirds; yet, little is known about the planktonic food webs supporting these higher trophic levels. To investigate seasonal changes in bacterial and protistan planktonic communities, amplicon sequences of 16S and 18S rRNA genes were generated from samples collected during periods of ice-cover (April), ice break-up (June), and open water (August) from shallow lagoons along the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast from 2011 through 2013. Catalog of GenBank sequence read archive (SRA) entries of metagenomic DNA sequence analyses of bacterial and archaeal water column communities along the Eastern Beaufort Sea coast, North Slope, Alaska, 2012

In contrast to temperate systems, Arctic lagoons that span the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast face extreme seasonality. Nine months of ice cover up to ∼1.7 m thick is followed by a spring thaw that introduces an enormous pulse of freshwater, nutrients, and organic matter into these lagoons over a relatively brief 2–3 week period. Prokaryotic communities link these subsidies to lagoon food webs through nutrient uptake, heterotrophic production, and other biogeochemical processes, but little is known about how the genomic capabilities of these communities respond to seasonal variability. This study characterizes the metabolic capabilities of microbial communities across three seasons in two lagoons and one open coastal site along the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast. Mean - Variance Experiment sample archives

We designed novel field experimental infrastructure to resolve the relative importance and interactions among changes in precipitation mean and variance in regulating the structure and function of dryland populations, communities, and ecosystem processes. The Mean x Variance Experiment (MVE) adds three novel elements to prior designs (Gherardi & Sala 2013) that have manipulated interannual variance in climate in the field by (i) determining interactive effects of mean and variance in a factorial design that crosses a drier mean with increased (more) variance, (ii) studying multiple dryland ecosystem types to compare their susceptibility to transition under interactive climate drivers, and (iii) adding stochasticity to our treatments to permit the antecedent effects that occur under natural climate variability. This new infrastructure enables direct experimental tests of the hypothesis that interactions between the mean and variance of precipitation will have larger ecological impacts than either the mean or variance in precipitation alone. We collected samples of soils, biological soil crusts, leaves of the foundation plant species, and roots of the two dominant grass species each year during peak productivity (September-October). These samples enable us to address the question: How do interactions between the mean and variance of precipitation alter the biogeochemistry and microbiomes of plants and soils. This data package includes accession numbers for all samples collected from the Mean x Variance Experiment at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, Socorro, NM.

Webis-Web-Archive-17

<p>The Webis-Web-Archive-17 comprises a total of 10,000 web page archives from mid-2017 that were carefully sampled from the Common Crawl to involve a mixture of high-ranking and low-ranking web pages. The dataset contains the web archive files, HTML DOM, and screenshots of each web page, as well as per-page annotations of visual web archive quality. AgMIP's global gridded crop model intercomparison (GGCMI) phase II CTWN-A archive: priority 1 outputs from LPJmL soybean simulations

<p>This data set contains output data from simulations with the model LPJmL for soybean as part of AgMIP&#39;s Global Gridded Crop Model Intercomparison (GGCMI) phase II output data set. Output variables included are: crop yield, above-ground biomass, plant day, maturity day, potential irrigation water withdrawal, actual growing season evapotranspiration . Simulations are based on 31-year simulations using the AgMERRA data set with 4 atmospheric CO2 mixing ratios (C=360, 510, 660, 810 ppm) uniform offsets for temperature (T= -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 K), water (W= -50, -30, -20, -10, 0, 10, 20, 30 %, and infinite/irrigated), and 3 nitrogen input levels (N= 10, 60, 200 kgN/ha) using 2 assumptions on adaptation (A= &#39;none&#39;, &#39;regain original growing season&#39;).</p> <p>Version 2 of these files has been corrected with respect to the temporal sequence of results, which is not important if looking at 30-year averages as in Franke et al. 2020, but becomes relevant if looking at individual years.</p>
