Soil water and chloride concentration profiles in 20 playas at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2014
This data package contains soil water and chloride content data from cores collected in 20 playas in the Jornada Basin of southern New Mexico, USA. The objectives of this work were to assess the rates and controls of groundwater recharge through playas in the Southwestern USA. The twenty playas were cored to 5 meter depth and we used the chloride mass balance (CMB) approach to empirically estimate groundwater recharge beneath playa surfaces. The measured variables are gravimetric soil moisture (kg water/kg soil), soil bulk density (kg/m3), volumetric water content (m3/m3), and porewater chloride (mg/L). Determination of the Chloride Ion Deposition by the Bresle Method
<p> In corrosion science, accurate determination of chloride ion deposition rates is critical to mitigating the environmental impact on structures. Traditional methods, such as the wet candle and dry plate methods (ISO 9225), are often inaccurate in capturing localized conditions and are also time consuming and costly. The Bresle method, which measures soluble salts directly on metal surfaces, offers a more targeted approach. This article examines the Bresle method as an alternative for determining average monthly chloride ion deposition rates, including a regression analysis comparing the Bresle method with the wet candle method, and examines the long-term salinity of exposed surfaces in comparison with the additive approach to surface salinity. The paper hypothesizes that the Bresle method can be used as an alternative to the wet candle method. Linear regression analysis shows a strong correlation in chloride ion deposition rates compared to those measured by the wet candle method. However, cumulative measurements using long-term exposed coupons are unreliable due to inconsistent trends.</p>

Data from: Oral exposure to benzalkonium chlorides in male and female mice reveals sex-dependent alteration of the gut microbiome and bile acid profile
<p>Benzalkonium chlorides (BACs) are commonly used disinfectants in a variety of consumer and food-processing settings, and the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased usage of BACs. The prevalence of BACs raises the concern that BAC exposure could disrupt the gastrointestinal microbiota, thus interfering with the beneficial functions of the microbes. We hypothesize that BAC exposure can alter the gut microbiome diversity and composition, which will disrupt bile acid homeostasis along the gut-liver axis. In this study, male and female mice were exposed orally to d<sub>7</sub>-C12- and d<sub>7</sub>-C16-BACs at 120 µg/g/day for one week. UPLC-MS/MS analysis of liver, blood, and fecal samples of BAC-treated mice demonstrated the absorption and metabolism of BACs. Both parent BACs and their metabolites were detected in all exposed samples. Additionally, 16S rRNA sequencing was carried out on the bacterial DNA isolated from the cecum intestinal content. For female mice, and to a lesser extent in males, we found that treatment with either d<sub>7</sub>-C12- or d<sub>7</sub>-C16-BAC led to decreased alpha diversity and differential composition of gut bacteria with notably decreased actinobacteria phylum. Lastly, through a targeted bile acid quantitation analysis, we observed decreases in secondary bile acids in BAC-treated mice, which was more pronounced in the female mice. This finding is supported by decreases in bacteria known to metabolize primary bile acids into secondary bile acids, such as the families of Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae. Together, these data signify the potential impact of BACs on human health through disturbance of the gut microbiome and gut-liver interactions.</p>

Bacteria-based agents (BAS) and crystalline admixtures (CA) are explored as healing agents to enhance chloride resistance and prevent corrosion. Healing of 100 µm and 300 µm wide cracks was investigated, in combination with two conditioning methods. Either the samples were subjected to wet/dry cycles for 3 months before exposure (“healed”), or they were directly exposed to artificial seawater after crack creation (“unhealed”). </p> </div> <h2>Files</h2>

Paleohydrology on Mars constrained by mass balance and mineralogy of pre‐Amazonian sodium chloride lakes
<p>Included are the raw results obtained by running the numerical models and analyzing the remote sensing maps. Data for: Comparison of contributions to chloride in urban stormwater from winter brine and rock salt application
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>The use of road salt to increase roadway safety during winter storms releases high concentrations of chloride into urban and suburban stormwater. This stormwater flows into nearby streams, resulting in concentrations of chloride that can exceed water quality standards intended to protect aquatic life. As chloride pollution is not readily filtered by soil or plants, mitigation will require reductions in the amount of salt used. In this study, cities in St. Louis County, Missouri, U.S., were used as a test case for brining as a best management practice (BMP) to reduce salt use relative to the standard practice of spreading solid rock salt. The practice of brining involves the dissolution of road salt in water and the application of the resulting brine solution to roadways in advance of a forecasted winter storm. During the winters of 2016-17 and 2017-18, stormwater runoff from residential areas was monitored in paired cities to determine if the availability of brining as a BMP for salt application on residential roads would result in a decrease of chloride in stormwater and, therefore, a decrease in chloride reaching urban streams. The use of brining by city governments resulted in a 45% average reduction of chloride loads conveyed to streams, demonstrating that brining is a highly viable BMP for local municipal operations.</p> <p><strong>Publication DOI:</strong></p> <p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.9b02864">https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.9b02864</a></p>
Data for: Chloride-dependent mechanisms of multimodal sensory discrimination and nociceptive sensitization in Drosophila
<p>Individual sensory neurons can be tuned to many stimuli, each driving unique, stimulus-relevant behaviors, and the ability of multimodal nociceptor neurons to discriminate between potentially harmful and innocuous stimuli is broadly important for organismal survival. Moreover, disruptions in the capacity to differentiate between noxious and innocuous stimuli can result in neuropathic pain. <em>Drosophila</em> larval Class III (CIII) neurons are peripheral noxious cold nociceptors and innocuous touch mechanosensors; high levels of activation drive cold-evoked contraction (CT) behavior, while low levels of activation result in a suite of touch-associated behaviors. However, it is unknown what molecular factors underlie CIII multimodality. Here, we show that the TMEM16/anoctamins <em>subdued</em> and <em>white walker</em> (<em>wwk</em>; <em>CG15270</em>) are required for cold-evoked CT, but not for touch-associated behavior, indicating a conserved role for anoctamins in nociception. We also evidence that CIII neurons make use of atypical depolarizing chloride currents to encode cold, and that overexpression of <em>ncc69</em>-a fly homologue of <em>NKCC1</em>-results in phenotypes consistent with neuropathic sensitization, including behavioral sensitization and neuronal hyperexcitability, making <em>Drosophila</em> CIII neurons a candidate system for future studies of the basic mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain</p>
