Aerodynamics code used in Wind Energy Science paper "Comparison of a coupled near- and far-wake model with a free-wake vortex code"

<p>This research code&nbsp;has been developed from the start of my PhD as a first step before the HAWC2 implementation of the near wake model.</p> <p>It can be used to make aerodynamic computations of a stiff wind turbine rotor, and it includes</p> <ul> <li>A BEM and far wake model implementation based on the one in HAWC2</li> <li>An attached flow unsteady airfoil aerodynamics model including the modifications described in the WES article</li> <li>Most importantly a near wake model implementation including all major modifications except the recent stand still extension presented at&nbsp;TORQUE 2016</li> </ul> <p>All the data files need to be in a subfolder &#39;NREL_5MW&#39; located in the same folder as the compiled source code.</p> <p>With the present (hardcoded) settings, the program will simulate the NREL 5 MW reference turbine for 650 seconds, with blade vibrations&nbsp;according to&nbsp;different prescribed mode shapes&nbsp;after steady state is reached. The aerodynamics model is a coupled near and far wake model. The integrated aerodynamic work during 1&nbsp;period&nbsp;of the different prescribed vibrations will be output in the file &#39;aerowork.out&#39; .</p> <p>The NREL 5 MW turbine is described in:</p> <p>Jonkman, J., Butterfield, S., Musial,W., and Scott, G.: Definition of a 5-MW Reference Wind Turbine for Offshore System Development, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2009.</p>

India Onshore Wind Energy Atlas Accounting for Altitude and Land Use Restrictions and Co-Located Solar

<p>India faces the simultaneous challenges of meeting rising energy demand and reducing carbon emissions. To address these, India must transition to renewable energy sources. These high-resolution maps are used to quantify available areas for wind farms, after accounting for restrictions, including airports, buildings, protected land use, military zones, railways, roads, water bodies, waterways, wildlife and nature, high elevation and slope, and existing solar farms, to which policy-informed setback distances are applied. This study finds the wind and solar potential within available areas considering three altitudes (100 m, 150 m, 200 m) and four wind speed thresholds (5-8 m/s), and modern wind turbine and solar array dimensions. The raster files included here indicate available areas after aggregating restrictions for different combinations of altitude and wind speed threshold. Availability is indicated with a binary system in which available land is designated with a value of zero and restricted land is designated with a value of one.</p>

Plaster finish on ceiling, nylon carpet on floor<br> Double glazed window. Five panes available: one large central fixed, two small clerestory opening, and two large side opening.<br> For simulation purposes a single equivalent area of all openings modelled.<br> Material data sources: gov.scot, puravent.co.uk, nature.com. Effects of water source and technology on energy use and environmental impacts of rice production in northern Iran

<p>To analyze the energy flow and greenhouse gas emissions, a total of 200 paddy fields were selected based on the water source utilized for irrigation (river as the surface water source and well as the underground water source), transplanting methods (traditional and mechanical) and grain yield (low- and high-yielding rice cultivars) as a factorial experimental design (2&times;2&times;2=8 conditions). Data were collected in 2020 from 200 rice growers in northern Iran using a face-to-face questionnaire survey.</p>

Energy differences between multielectron atoms (H to Ne) with non-integer nuclear charges using SCF methods and AIT

<p>Energy difference predictions for multi-electron atoms: for the basis set def2-TZVP and the basis functions of the reference atom xenon, self-consistent field (SCF) energy differences between an atom&#39;s initial charge and an atom of final charge have been calculated using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method of <a href="https://pyscf.org/">PySCF</a>. Each energy difference is complemented by the prediction of the same difference using the <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.13794">Alchemical Integral Transform</a> (AIT), given in separate perturbative orders 1,2,3,4,5.</p>

Prey-driven behavioral habitat use in a low-energy ambush predator

<p>Food acquisition is an important modulator of animal behavior and habitat selection that can affect fitness. Optimal foraging theory predicts that predators should select habitat patches to maximize their foraging success and net energy gain, likely achieved by targeting areas with high prey availability. However, it is debated whether prey availability drives fine-scale habitat selection for predators. We assessed whether an ambush predator, the timber rattlesnake (<i>Crotalus horridus</i>), exhibits optimal foraging site selection based on the spatial distribution and availability of prey. We used passive infrared camera trap detections of potential small mammal prey (<i>Peromyscus</i> spp., <i>Tamias striatus</i>, and <i>Sciurus</i> spp.) to generate variables of prey availability across the study area and used whether a snake was observed in a foraging location or not to model optimal foraging in timber rattlesnakes. Our models of small mammal spatial distributions broadly predicted that prey availability was greatest in mature deciduous forests, but <i>T. striatus</i> and <i>Sciurus</i> spp. exhibited greater spatial heterogeneity compared to <i>Peromyscus</i> spp. We found the spatial distribution of cumulative small mammal encounters (i.e. overall prey availability), rather than the distribution of any one species, to be highly predictive of snake foraging. Timber rattlesnakes appear to forage where the probability of encountering prey is greatest. Our study provides evidence for fine-scale optimal foraging in a low-energy, ambush predator and offers new insights into drivers of snake foraging and habitat selection. </p>
