Data from: Mechanical fatigue in microtubules

<p><span>Mechanical failure of biological nanostructures due to sustained force application has been studied in great detail. In contrast, fatigue failure arising from repeated application of subcritical stresses has received little attention despite its prominent role in engineering and potentially biology. Here, taxol-stabilized microtubules are up to 256 times bent into sinusoidal shapes of varying wavelength and the frequency of breaking events are observed. These experiments allow the calculation of fatigue life parameters for microtubules. Repeated buckling due to 12.5% compression – equal to the compression level experienced by microtubules in contracting cardiomyocytes – results in failure after in average 5 million cycles, whereas at 20% compression failure occurs after in average one thousand cycles. The fatigue strength (Basquin) exponent B is estimated as -0.06. </span></p>

KupferDigital mechanical testing datasets: Stress relaxation and low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests

<p><span>The Kupfer<em>Digital</em> project deals with the development of a data ecosystem for digital materials research on the basis of ontology-based digital representations of copper and copper alloys. This document provides exemplary mechanical testing datasets for training the developed Kupfer<em>Digital</em> infrastructures. Different types of cast copper alloys were provided for this research and their mechanical testing (stress relaxation and low-cycle fatigue) was performed in the accredited materials testing laboratory, while the test results were reported according to the DIN/ISO standards and attached with the maximum possible metadata about the sample history, equipment, and calibration. The attached content file consisted of the obtained primary raw testing data as well as the secondary datasets of these tests containing the detailed metadata of mechanical testing methods. Such test data files are processed by the Kupfer<em>Digital</em> digital tools to be converted to standardized machine-readable data files.</span></p>

Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction among Registered Nurses Caring for Cancer Patients: An Explorative Survey

<p>Compassion fatigue is a complex phenomenon, increasingly studied by health services. In addition to the analysis of the phenomenon, studies also consider the factors that influence the satisfaction deriving from nursing work, characterized by the compassion inherent in the relationship with the patient, in addition to the associated fatigue and the consequent risk of Burnout. . The aim of this study, conducted at the IOV - Veneto Oncology Institute in Padua, is to describe Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction in nurses working in oncology, where the work requires a strong degree of sensitivity. An exploratory cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of nurses from homogeneous medical and surgical areas who work with cancer patients. A validated Italian version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale: Compassion Satisfaction and Fatigue was applied. Socio-demographic and professional classification variables were also recorded.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>This data publication contains&nbsp;full-field displacements and strains&nbsp;obtained by 3D digital image correlation (DIC)&nbsp;using a GOM Aramis 12M system including&nbsp;three fatigue crack propagation (fcp)&nbsp;experiments of AA2024-T3 aluminium sheet material.</p> <p>The repository consists of three datasets of different experiments named&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li>S<sub>950,1.6&nbsp;</sub>- MT950 specimen, 1.6 mm sheet thickness, load ratios R=0.3, 1.0</li> <li>S<sub>160,2.0&nbsp;</sub>-&nbsp;MT160 specimen, 2.0 mm sheet thickness, load ratios R=0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0</li> <li>S<sub>160,4.7&nbsp;</sub>- MT160 specimen, 4.7&nbsp;mm sheet thickness, load ratios R=0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0</li> </ul> <p>where S<sub>w,t</sub>&nbsp;denotes a middle tension (MT) specimen with width w and thickness t. COVID-19-related fatigue: cognitive profiles and multidomain complaints at 12 months follow-up

<p>Cognitive deficits were often reported during the acute and post-acute stages of severe COVID-19 and were often, but not always, associated with signs of brain damage. Population-wide surveys highlighted the need for investigations into the nature, the severity and the evolution of cognitive, behavioural and psychiatric deficits. In this observational study, we describe the outcome at 12 months after severe COVID-19 involving intensive care unit stay and critical chronic illness in six patients, who had no history of prior brain dysfunction. A pervading mental and physical fatigue was consistently reported as well as numerous multidomain complaints, which affect to a certain extent everyday life, and for some of the patients a certain degree of neurobehavioural (apathy) and/or psychiatric (anxiety) dysfunction. Standardized neuropsychological tests revealed for 4 of the 6 patients the occurrence relatively isolated of cognitive dysfunction or performance at the lower limit of the norm&nbsp;in some, but not all attentional, executive and/or working memory tests. Somatic scales highlighted the presence of dyspnoea, muscle weakness, an olfactory disorder and/or minor sleep problems in some but not all patients.</p>

Wearable Network for Multi-Level Physical Fatigue Prediction in Manufacturing Workers - Dataset

<p>This dataset contains data from 43 subjects following two authentic manufacturing protocols and their self-reported fatigue score. The system employs 6 wearable sensors to continuously track vital and locomotive signs from multiple body locations.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The goal of the experiment is to predict fatigue trends in a subject, while they are asked to perform pre-defined manual tasks simulating a manufacturing environment, using data from soft, flexible, wearable sensors and a vision system. The tasks in this study are repetitive and physically exerting involving intricate steps taken in real manufacturing settings. The iterative nature of the tasks facilitates comparative analyses of distinct temporal segments to characterize fatigue. The two manufacturing tasks are (1) Task Composite: Composite Sheet Layup, and (2) Task Harnessing: Wire Harnessing. The task protocol requires the subject to wear sensors to monitor vital and locomotive signs continuously. Additionally, we incorporate a weighted vest to exaggerate the induced fatigue in a reasonable duration for the study to mimic a full shift for a manufacturing worker. Each task consists of two rest periods of 5 minutes each at the start and end, as well as five segments of physical tasks. On average, each task takes a total of 1 hour. Before each data segment, the subject fills out a survey form to indicate their current fatigues as per the Borg scale.&nbsp;</p>

Data for: Deformable hard tissue with high fatigue resistance in the hinge of bivalve Cristaria plicata

<p><span>The hinge of bivalve shells can sustain hundreds of thousands of repeating opening-and-closing valve motions throughout their lifetime. We study the hierarchical design of the mineralized tissue in the hinge of bivalve, <em>Cristaria plicata</em>, which endows the tissue with deformability and fatigue resistance, and underlies the repeating motion capability consequently. This folding fan-shaped tissue consists of radially aligned, brittle aragonite nanowires embedded in resilient matrix, and can translate external radial loads to circumferential deformation. The hard-soft complex microstructure can suppress stress concentration within the tissue. Coherent nanotwin boundaries along the longitudinal direction of the nanowires increase their resistance to bending fracture. The unusual biomineral, which exploits the inherent properties of each component through multiscale structural design, provides insights into the evolution of anti-fatigue structural materials.</span></p>
