Mass and Chemistry of Organic Horizons and Surface Mineral Soils on Watershed 1 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest 1996-present
This data set includes chemistry of O-horizons ("forest floor") and the 0-10 cm mineral soil layer in Watershed 1 at Hubbard Book. Calcium in the form of wollastonite (CaSiO3) was added to Watershed 1 in October 1999. The application rate was 1028 kg Ca per ha, and the application was relatively uniform across the watershed. Pre-treatment forest floor surveys were completed in 1996 and 1998. The first post-treatment forest floor survey was completed in 2000. This data set includes mass and thickness data for the sampled layers. Chemical data include concentrations and pools of organic matter, C, N, Ca, Mg, K, P, Mn, Fe, Al, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Soil pH and exchangeable Al, Ca, Mg, K, and H are also included. Sampling is intended to continue at 4 or 5 year intervals. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) project studies N and P acquisition and limitation of forest productivity through a series of nutrient manipulations in northern hardwood forests. Mass and Nutrient Loss in Decomposing Hardwood Boles on Watershed 1 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1990 - present
In 1990-1991 segments of boles from felled sugar maple (Acer saccharum), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) and American beech (Fagus grandifolia) trees were placed in the field to study the rate of decomposition and nutrient loss (or gain) over time. The segments incubated in the field, ranging from 0.5-1.3 meters in length, were paired with fresh segments from the same trees. The fresh segments were taken to the lab shortly after felling, dried, weighed and subsampled. Fresh samples of wood and bark were collected separately. Incubated bole segments were collected in 1993 (T1), 1997 (T2), 2001 (T3), 2007 (T4) and 2015/2016 (T5). The whole bole segments were transported to the lab, measured, dried and weighed to determine mass loss. Subsamples of the bole wood and bark were collected for chemical analysis, including C, N, H, Ca, Mg, K, Si, Al, Pb, Zn, Mn and Fe. Chemical analyses were conducted concurrently on the fresh (T0) and incubated samples. This data set includes the masses of the fresh and incubated boles along with the concentrations of the chemical analytes. Element pools in the boles can be calculated by multiplying the concentrations by the mass values. This data set includes chemical data for samples collected in 1993, 2001, and 2007 and their paired fresh samples. Samples from 1997 were measured for mass, but inadvertently discarded prior to chemical analysis. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Daily Streamflow by Watershed, 1956 - present
Streamflow at 9 watersheds (12-77 Hectares) within the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, USA has been measured continuously from as early as 1955. Streams are gaged with V-notch weirs, in some cases in combination with rectangular San Dimas flumes, at the outlet of each watershed. Through 2012, stage heights were recorded by means of a mechanical spring-wound clock and pen on a strip-chart recorder. Beginning January 1, 2013, these analog chart recorders were replaced with digital sensors. Overlap with both measurement techniques occurred for several years at all weirs. Streamflow data were gathered by the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and contributed to the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The Hubbard Brook Watershed Stream and Precipitation Chemistry Record is a dataset of chemical concentration data for precipitation and streamwater samples that have been collected weekly since the summer of 1963 from streams and precipitation gauges throughout the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, a research forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. HBWatER currently collects weekly samples from nine gauged watersheds, the mainstem of the Hubbard Brook into which each small stream drains, and two long-term precipitation collection sites. HBWatER was begun in the 1960's by Gene E. Likens, F. Herbert Bormann, Robert S. Pierce, and Noye M. Johnson who began collecting and analyzing stream and precipitation (rain and snow). They had a simple idea, that by comparing watershed inputs in rain and snow to watershed outputs from streams, they could measure the behavior of entire ecosystems in response to atmospheric pollution or forestry practices. Stream and precipitation samples have been collected every week from 1963 to the present day. Insights gained from studying this long-term chemical record led to the discovery of acid rain in North America and have documented the effectiveness of federal clean air legislation in reducing coalfired power plant emissions. The collection and analysis of HBWatER samples is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and Jeff Merriam (USFS) and the dataset is curated and maintained by a team of researchers: Chris Solomon (Cary IES), Emily Bernhardt (Duke), Bill McDowell (UNH), Charley Driscoll (Syracuse U.), Keith Nislow (USFS), and Mark Green (Case Western). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: 15 Minute Solar Radiation Measurements, 2014 - present
Beginning in 2014, solar radiation sensors were implemented at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to measure solar radiation at 15-minute intervals. Two collocated LiCor sensors were installed at Station 1 in July 2014. The 15-minute record for Headquarters begins in 2018 with a single sensor. Tree Seed Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1993 - ongoing
Tree seeds sorted and counted from long-term reference area litter traps are presented for 1993 until the present. These data are part of the LTER funded quantification of tree annual productivity. Our focal species for seed counts have been sugar maple, American beech and white ash. This data set allows comparison between seed production in reference sites (BB and TF) and the calcium addition watershed (W1) for these species. Physical and chemical properties of soils on Watershed 5 of Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, before and after whole-tree harvest
We sampled soils on watershed 5 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in 1983, prior to a whole-tree harvest conducted in the winter of 1983-84. We resampled in 1986, 1991, and 1998. All sampling was performed using a quantitative soil pit method. Samples of the combined Oi and Oe horizons; the Oa horizon; 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and >20 cm layers of mineral soil; and the C horizon were collected. Grab samples of pedogenic mineral horizons were also taken from the sides of a subset of pits in each year. Here we report soil chemistry, mass of soil, percent rock, bulk density, and organic matter. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The Hubbard Brook Stream Ecology Record: Algal Biomass (Chlorophyll-a), 2018 - ongoing
The Hubbard Brook Stream Ecology record is a companion dataset to the Hubbard Brook Watershed Stream and Precipitation Chemistry record. The Stream Ecology record started in 2018 and HBWatER collects ecological samples from seven gauged watersheds: Watersheds 1 through 6 and Watershed 9. HBWatER measures algal biomass, aquatic invertebrate emergence, and stream decomposition by measuring (1) chlorophyll-a on tiles and artificial moss, which approximate algal biomass growth on bare rock and bryophyte mats, (2) preserved algal biomass on artificial moss substrates in Lugol’s Iodine solution, (3) aquatic invertebrate emergence on replicate sticky traps placed above the stream, and (4) stream decomposition through leaf litter pack and cotton strip decay. To complement these ecological records, HBWaTER installed light sensors and field cameras to obtain better information about the light and stream environment daily. Three replicate light sensors that take sub-daily measurements of light level intensity are placed at each watershed at the weir pond (full-sun), and two under the canopy (partial shade). Field cameras take daily photos at noon of the stream canopy and the stream channel. While many studies at Hubbard Brook have measured algal biomass, aquatic invertebrates, and stream decomposition, they are scattered in locations across the valley, were performed at non-continuous times, and use various semi-comparable methods. The HBWatER Stream Ecology record was created to address this gap and systematically measure any long-term changes in the organisms living in the stream. The collection of HBWatER samples is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and analyses of these samples has been performed by Heather Malcom (Cary IES), Audrey Thellman (Duke), Steve Anderson (Duke), Geoff Wilson (Cary IES), and Adam Rok (Duke). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Watershed 3 – One year of resin-extracted solutes from variably saturated soils
Hbr363: WS3 One year of resin-extracted solutes from variably saturated soils The Lateral Weathering Study looks at spatial patterns of mineral weathering processes at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. This project is characterizing mineral and elemental depletion/enrichment, soil morphology and chemistry, solute transport, and groundwater chemistry along hydropedological gradients. This dataset provides the total elemental mass of inorganic solutes (Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, P, and S) as well as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) that were extracted off resins installed into shallow groundwater wells (~30-100cm) in Watershed 3. Resin packs were deployed for a total of one year (August 2019-2020) with four consecutive deployment periods, to avoid overloading resin ion capacity. Total mass for each solute was accounted for an entire resin pack, which was 5cm in height and 5cm in diameter, containing approximately 90 g of resin. Resin packs were installed in three different topographic positions along three transects (sites = 9), to characterize solute mass fluxes through different hydropedological units.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Oak seedling demography, 2011 - ongoing
This data set was built from a larger data set of marked northern red oak seedlings surveyed from 2011-2023. In this data set, only seedlings marked in their year of germination with full environmental and seedlings measures were kept (N = 937). The data set was built for an accelerated failure time model of seedling survival that found year of germination, seedling density, shrub cover and elevation to have the largest effect on survival time. The status of the seedling acorn (attached or missing) was also important. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil type prediction raster files
This dataset consists of raster files predicting spatial patterns in soils for the entire Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Eight soil units are used, following a hydropedologic approach, based on relationships between soil genetic horizon presence and thickness, and the frequency and depth of groundwater fluctuations. Nine raster files on a five-meter grid are presented, including one raster each showing the probability of presence of each of the eight soil units; the ninth raster represents the soil unit most likely to be present at each grid cell. The methods section of the metadata includes descriptions of the eight soil units and guidance for users of the model outputs. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Relations of the O-horizon with canopy tree species and hydropedologic soil types, 2021
As the interface between plants and soil, the organic horizon is the foundation of forest ecosystems. Two potential predictors of O-layer properties, vegetation and mineral soil type, are difficult to separate because they typically covary. We conducted a factorial study involving four canopy tree species and two soil types with distinctly different hydrology and topographic position to parse patterns in chemistry and microbiota of the O-layer in a north-temperate deciduous forest. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES).
