Life-cycle assessment of hydrogen systems: A systematic review and meta-regression analysis

<p>The high expectations placed on hydrogen as a clean fuel have led to a growing amount of life-cycle assessment (LCA) studies of hydrogen-related systems. The multiple methodological choices and diverse technical characteristics contribute to a broad set of practices, resulting in significant variability even among similar systems. This study sets the basis for the development of harmonised guidelines for LCA of fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) systems by analysing current LCA practices. The reviewed literature suggests that previous efforts on harmonisation of LCA methodological choices have led to common practices for certain choices, e.g. functional unit. However, an incomplete definition of some parameters hinders the interpretability of LCA results and hides the potential sources of variability in terms of LCA estimates. In this work, in addition to a systematic literature review of LCA of FCH systems to identify current practices and gaps, sources of variability were investigated for the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of hydrogen production systems through a meta-regression analysis (MRA). The MRA results show that the variability of LCA estimates in the literature can be explained by a limited set of qualitative (e.g. implementation of CO<sub>2</sub> capture, among other technological choices) and quantitative (e.g. electricity consumption for hydrogen processing) variables. Although a certain progress towards common methodological choices in LCA of FCH systems was identified, further work is still needed to harmonise practices, as well as to extend the application of the proposed MRA approach to other life-cycle indicators for both identification of main drivers and harmonisation of LCA impact scores.</p>

Social life cycle sustainability assessment of dried tomato products based on material and process selection through multi-criteria decision making

<h3>BACKGROUND</h3> <p>Tomatoes are a significant product of the Mediterranean region and a crucial component of the Mediterranean diet. The formulation of dried tomato products enriched with proteins and bioactive compounds could be a strategic approach to promote adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Six different novel tomato products were analyzed using different protein enrichment sources (pea proteins and leaf proteins) and drying technologies (hot-air dryer, microwave vacuum dryer, and conventional dryer). The novelty of this approach lies in combining product-specific criteria with global societal factors across their life cycles. Using 21 criteria and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) survey of experts, the social sustainability score for each product was determined through a multi-criteria assessment.</p> <h3>RESULTS</h3> <p>The tomato product's life cycles have minimal regional impacts on unemployment, access to drinking water, sanitation, or excessive working hours. However, they affect discrimination, migrant labor, children's education, and access to hospital beds significantly. The study identified nutritional quality as the top criterion, with the most sustainable design being a tomato bar enriched with pea protein and processed using microwave vacuum drying.</p> <h3>CONCLUSION</h3> <p>The study revealed that integrating sensory and nutrient compounds into social sustainability assessments improves food sustainability and provides a practical roadmap for social life cycle assessments of food products. It emphasized the importance of considering global social issues when reformulating Mediterranean products to ensure long-term adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Performance and environmental accounting of nutrient cycling models to estimate nitrogen emissions in agriculture and their sensitivity in life cycle assessment

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>Several models are available in the literature to estimate agricultural emissions. From life cycle assessment (LCA) perspective, there is no standardized procedure for estimating emissions of nitrogen or other nutrients. This article aims to compare four agricultural models (PEF, SALCA, Daisy and Animo) with different complexity levels and test their suitability and sensitivity in LCA.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Required input data, obtained outputs, and main characteristics of the models are presented. Then, the performance of the models was evaluated according to their potential feasibility to be used in estimating nitrogen emissions in LCA using an adapted version of the criteria proposed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and other relevant studies, to judge their suitability in LCA. Finally, nitrogen emissions from a case study of irrigated maize in Spain were estimated using the selected models and were tested in a full LCA to characterize the impacts.</p> <p>Results and discussion</p> <p>According to the set of criteria, the models scored, from best to worst: Daisy (77%), SALCA (74%), Animo (72%) and PEF (70%), being Daisy the most suitable model to LCA framework. Regarding the case study, the estimated emissions agreed to literature data for the irrigated corn crop in Spain and the Mediterranean, except N<sub>2</sub>O emissions. The impact characterization showed differences of up to 56% for the most relevant impact categories when considering nitrogen emissions. Additionally, an overview of the models used to estimate nitrogen emissions in LCA studies showed that many models have been used, but not always in a suitable or justified manner.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although mechanistic models are more laborious, mainly due to the amount of input data required, this study shows that Daisy could be a suitable model to estimate emissions when fertilizer application is relevant for the environmental study. In addition, and due to LCA urgently needing a solid methodology to estimate nitrogen emissions, mechanistic models such as Daisy could be used to estimate default values for different archetype scenarios.</p>

Characterization Factors for Microplastic Emissions in Life Cycle Assessment Considering Multimedia Fate Modelling

<p>These data provide supporting information for a forthcoming publication proposing new&nbsp;<strong>Regionalized Characterization Factors for Microplastic Emissions in Life Cycle Assessment</strong>.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Characterization Factors (CFs) are developed thanks to a fate model based on SimpleBox4Plastics: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5743268 and adapted to meet the USEtox methodology.&nbsp;</p> <p>They are derived from the "Regionalized_CFs_for_MP_emissions_in_LCIA.ipynb" script available on GitHub at https://github.com/Julouve/Regionalized_Characterization_Factors_for_Microplastic_Emissions_in_LCIA.git</p> <p>The CFs are developed for 14 polymers (EPS, PP, LDPE, HDPE, PS, PAN, PHA, PA, PLA, strach blend, PBAT, PET, PVC, TRWP) at 5 sizes (1, 10, 100, 1000, 5000 &mu;m) for 9 different regions (North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa &amp; Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Northern regions, Oceania, World) for 9 environmental compartments (air, lake water, river water, sea water, their sediment, natural soil, agricultural soil) on two scales (continental &amp; global) and for 3 ecosystems (marine, freshwater and terrestrial).&nbsp;</p> <p>CFs are computed thanks to 2 approaches: a surface approach (in PDF*m2*year/kg) and a species approach (in PDF*year/kg or species*year/kg).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Assessment of Accrued Damage and Remaining Useful Life in Leadfree Electronics Subjected to Multiple Thermal Environments of Thermal Aging and Thermal Cycling

A method has been developed for prognostication of accrued prior damage in electronics subjected to overlapping sequential environments of thermal aging and thermal cycling. The presented approach uses the LM Algorithm in conjunction with microstructural evolution of damage based leading indi- cator for estimating prior stress history. Specific damage proxies examined include the phase-growth indicator and the IMC thickness. The viability of the approach has been demonstrated for leadfree test assemblies subjected to thermal aging at 125 °C and redeployed in cyclic thermo-mechanical environment −55–125 °C. Damage equivalency relationships between thermal aging during storage life and the resulting reduction in thermo-mechanical reliability in cyclic thermal environments during field deployment has been derived and validated based on two damage proxies. Convergence of the damage mapping to a common solution from data based on the two separate leading indicators has been demonstrated. Assemblies subjected to sequential stresses have been prog- nosticated for accrued damage from sequential overlapping stresses of thermal aging and thermal cycling. Correlation between the prognosticated damage and the actual accrued damage demonstrates that the proposed approach can be used to assess damage accrued under overlapping thermo- mechanical stresses of thermal aging and thermal cycling. In addition, prognostics metrics have been used to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the prognostic algorithms using both the leading indicators. Results demonstrate that both damage proxies work well in estimating accrued damage and estimating residual life.
