Bethel Digital Lockdown: A Glove by Zach Haala
This is a model of one my baseball gloves. It is a Wilson A2000 1786 Model, and has been very representational of my covid-19 experience. Over the laboring months of lockdown, I was left without a job for a while, and with not much else going on becuase of the outbreak, I was left with much time to spend at the baseball field. Being an athlete at the collegiate level, working on my game is nothing new, however, this glove is not exactly representational of me improving my play, but rather provides symbolism for the hours a day I spent at the field as an escape from the reality that was the pandemic. Roles of regional transport and vertical mixing in aerosol pollution in Shanghai over the COVID-19 lockdown period observed above urban canopy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Regional transport and vertical mixing are important for aerosol pollution of megacities, but their roles are often challenging to assess via ground observations. In this study, we measured aerosol chemical composition simultaneously above urban canopy (Shanghai Tower, 609 m), a site representative of aerosols from regional scale, and a nearby ground site and investigated the roles of regional transport and vertical mixing over 2020 COVID-19 lockdown period (Jan.1-Apr. 18), when local emissions were first drastically reduced and then recovered. During the lockdown period, regional transport was the major source of most aerosol species (organics, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>, SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2-</sup>, and NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>) at both heights according to the high correlation coefficients (R=0.81~0.87) between both heights. Correlation coefficients and vertical ratios (609 m/ground) of most aerosol components showed similar diurnal variations with the evolution of planetary boundary layer height, indicating the role of vertical mixing in aerosol pollution. Moreover, the concentrations of aerosol components at 609 m generally preceded those at ground level by 1~2 h, indicating that aerosols were first transported at upper boundary layer, and then were mixed downwards to ground level. At 609 m, highly oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA; a surrogate of secondary organic aerosol (SOA)) dominated in organic aerosol (≥75%). The high correlations (R=0.96) between OOA and hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA; a surrogate of primary organic aerosol (POA)) at 609 m indicated that they originated similarly from regional transport. This study highlights the importance of regional joint prevention and control of pollutant emissions and observation above urban canopy.</p> <p> </p> <p>The data files are provided for readers to evaluate this research.</p>

<p>This online repository offers supplementary datasets supporting the findings in the research article titled "Using explainable machine learning to interpret the effects of policies on air pollution: COVID-19 lockdown in London," published in Environmental Science & Technology. The dataset contains air quality data from different monitoring sites in London between 2016 and 2020 and weather data for the same period. Additionally, the dataset incorporates 136 features relating to London's Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) in the year 2019, which can be used to identify the key factors contributing to the heterogeneous changes in air quality levels at different spatial locations during the pandemic. Please refer to the metadata file for detailed data sources and descriptions. </p>
Recognizing the importance of near-home contact with nature for mental well-being based on the COVID-19 lockdown experience
<p>Several urban landscape planning solutions have been introduced around the world to find a balance between developing urban spaces, maintaining and restoring biodiversity, and enhancing quality of human life. Our global mini-review, combined with analysis of big data collected from Google Trends at global scale, reveals the importance of enjoying day-to-day contact with nature and engaging in such activities as nature observation and identification and gardening for the mental well-being of humans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Home-based activities, such as watching birds from one's window, identifying species of plants and animals, backyard gardening, and collecting information about nature for citizen science projects, were popular during the first lockdown in spring 2020, when people could not easily venture out of their homes. In our mini-review, we found 37 articles from 28 countries with a total sample of 114,466 people. These papers suggest that home-based engagement with nature was an entertaining and pleasant distraction that helped preserve mental well-being during a challenging time. According to Google Trends, interest in such activities increased during lockdown compared to the previous five years. Millions of people worldwide are chronically or temporarily confined to their homes and neighborhoods because of illness, childcare chores, or elderly care responsibility, which makes it difficult for them to travel far to visit such places as national parks, created through land sparing, where people go to enjoy nature and relieve stress. This article posits that for such people, living in an urban landscape designed to facilitate effortless contact with small natural areas is a more effective way to receive the mental health benefits of contact with nature than visiting a sprawling nature park on rare occasions.</p>
