Noncentrosymmetric Lanthanide-Based MOF Materials Exhibiting Strong SHG Activity and NIR Luminescence of Er3+: Application in Nonlinear Optical Thermometry

<p>Optically active luminescent materials based on lanthanide ions attract significant attention due to their unique spectroscopic properties, nonlinear optical activity, and the possibility of application as contactless sensors. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) that exhibit strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and are optically active in the NIR region are unexpectedly underrepresented. Moreover, such Ln-MOFs require ligands that are chiral and/or need multistep synthetic procedures. Here, we show that the NIR pulsed laser irradiation of the noncentrosymmetric, isostructural Ln-MOF materials (MOF-Er<sup>3+</sup> (1) and codoped MOF-Yb<sup>3+</sup>/Er<sup>3+</sup> (2)) that are constructed from simple, achiral organic substrates in a one-step procedure results in strong and tunable SHG activity. The SHG signals could be easily collected, exciting the materials in a broad NIR spectral range, from &asymp;800 to 1500 nm, resulting in the intense color of emission, observed in the entire visible spectral region. Moreover, upon excitation in the range of &asymp;900 to 1025 nm, the materials also exhibit the NIR luminescence of Er<sup>3+</sup> ions, centered at &asymp;1550 nm. The use of a 975 nm pulse excitation allows simultaneous observations of the conventional NIR emission of Er<sup>3+</sup> and the SHG signal, altogether tuned by the composition of the Ln-MOF materials. Taking the benefits of different thermal responses of the mentioned effects, we have developed a nonlinear optical thermometer based on lanthanide-MOF materials. In this system, the SHG signal decreases with temperature, whereas the NIR emission band of Er<sup>3+</sup> slightly broadens, allowing ratiometric (Er<sup>3+</sup> NIR 1550 nm/SHG 488 nm) temperature monitoring. Our study provides a groundwork for the rational design of readily available and self-monitoring NLO-active Ln-MOFs with the desired optical and electronic properties.</p>

Data for Technical note: Darkroom lighting for luminescence dating laboratory

<p>An optimal lighting setting for the darkroom laboratory is fundamental for the accuracy of luminescence dating results. Here, we present the lighting setting implemented in the new Luminescence Dating Research Laboratory at Stony Brook University, USA. In this study, we performed spectral measurements on different light sources and filters. Then, we measured the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal of quartz and the infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) at 50 &deg;C (IR50) as well as post-IR IRSL at 290 &deg;C (pIRIR290) signal of potassium (K)-rich feldspar samples exposed to various light sources and durations.</p> <p>Our ambient lighting is provided by ceiling fixtures, each equipped with a single orange light-emitted diode (LED). In addition, our task-oriented lighting, mounted below each wall-mounted cabinet and inside the fume hoods, is equipped with a dimmable orange LED stripline.</p> <p>The ambient lighting, delivering 0.4 lux at the sample position, induced a loss of less than 5 % (on average) in the quartz OSL dose after 24 h of exposure, and up to 5 % (on average) in the IR50 dose for the K-rich feldspar samples, with no measurable effect on their pIRIR290 dose. The fume hood lighting, delivering 1.1 lux at the sample position, induced a dose loss of less than 5 % in quartz OSL and K-rich feldspar IR50 doses after 24 h of exposure, with no measurable effect on their pIRIR290 dose. As light exposure during sample preparation is usually less than 24 h, we conclude that our lighting setting is suitable for luminescence dating darkrooms, it is simple, inexpensive to build, and durable.</p>

In the intimacy of the darkness: genetic polyandry in deep-sea luminescent lanternsharks Etmopterus spinax and Etmopterus molleri (Squaliformes, Etmopteridae)

<p>Multiple paternity seems common within elasmobranchs. Focusing on two deep-sea shark species: the velvet belly lanternshark, <em>Etmopterus spinax</em>, and the slendertail lanternshark, <em>Etmopterus molleri</em>, we inferred the paternity in 31 <em>E.&nbsp;spinax</em> litters from Norway (3-18 embryos per litter) and 6 <em>E.&nbsp;molleri</em> litters from Japan (3-6 embryos), using 21 and 10 specific microsatellites, respectively. At least two <em>E.&nbsp;spinax</em> litters were sired from multiple fathers each, with highly variable paternal skew (1:1 to 9:1). Conversely, no clear signal of genetic polyandry was found in <em>E.&nbsp;molleri</em>.</p> <p>This dataset contains the microsatellite genotypes analysed (281 <em>E. spinax</em>&nbsp;&times; 29 loci; 42 <em>E. molleri</em>&nbsp;&times; 19 loci).</p>

Surface chemistry dictates the enhancement of luminescence and stability of InP QDs upon c-ALD ZnO hybrid shell growth

<p>Indium phosphide quantum dots (InP QDs) are a promising example of RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant light-emitting materials. However, they suffer from low quantum yield and instability upon processing under ambient conditions. Colloidal atomic layer deposition (c-ALD) has been recently proposed as a methodology to grow hybrid materials including QDs and organic/inorganic oxide shells, which possess new functions compared to the as-synthesized QDs. Here, we demonstrate that ZnO shells can be grown on InP QDs obtained via two synthetic routes, which are the classical sylilphosphine-based and the more recently developed aminophosphine-based one. We find that the ZnO shell increases the photoluminescence emission significantly only in the case of aminophosphine-based InP QDs. We rationalize this result with the different chemistry involved in the nucleation step of the shell and the resulting surface defect passivation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the ZnO shell prevents degradation of the InP QD suspension under ambient conditions by avoiding moisture induced ligand displacement from their surface. Overall, this study proposes c-ALD as a methodology for the synthesis of alternative InP-based core@shell QDs and provides insight into the surface chemistry that results in both enhanced photoluminescence and stability required for application in optoelectronic devise and bio-imaging.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
