Tomographic data for testing, demonstrating, and developing methods of removing ring artifacts

<p>These tomographic data were used for demonstrating our methods of eliminating ring artifacts published in Optics Express, <em>Nghia T. Vo, Robert C. Atwood, and Michael Drakopoulos, &quot;Superior techniques for eliminating ring artifacts in X-ray micro-tomography,&quot;&nbsp;<strong>26</strong>, 28396-28412 (2018)</em><em>. </em>In sinogram, the artifacts appear as straight lines or stripe artifacts. The data have many types&nbsp;of stripe&nbsp;artifacts: full stripes, partial stripes, unresponsive stripes, fluctuating stripes, and blurry stripes. Development of a Standard Test Method for Characterization of Asphalt Modifiers and Aging-Related Degradation Using an Extensional Rheometer

<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17BLSU01. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;An extensional deformation test method using a Sentmanat Extensional Rheometer (SER) fixture inside a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) is developed in this study to investigate the degradation of the polymer due to aging and to investigate the effect of modifier type. A relationship between different percentages of modifier and ductility of the modified binder is also investigated. The sample geometrics used in this study are 1 mm  0.72 mm and 3 mm  0.72 mm. A total of one hundred and sixty-two samples were tested. Three modifiers Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS), Polyphosphoric Acid (PPA) and latex were used. One PG 76-22, one PG 64-22 and one polymer-modified asphalt emulsion (PAME) were used. First peak elongation force, (F1) is the binders&rsquo; stiffness and Second peak elongation force, (F2) is the polymer characteristics. F2 is more visible comparatively at the higher temperature. In most cases, F2 reduces after Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) and Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) aging. To normalize the stiffness effect of F1 on F2, in this study F2/F1 was used to analyze aging susceptibility of modifiers. All the testing temperatures used in this study exhibited a reduction in F2/F1 due to RTFO aging and further reduction due to PAV aging. Therefore, through this study, it is recommended that this parameter can be used to determine aging susceptibility of polymer in a polymer-modified asphalt binder. F2 is only obtained from the SBS and latex modified binders and emulsions. Addition of PPA did not show any F2, making SBS the most effective modifier among SBS, PPA and latex. F2 has a linear correlation with the percent of the polymer in the PMAE, SBS modified PG 64-22, SBS and PPA modified PG 64-22 and latex modified PG 64-22 with R2 values equal to 0.9934, 0.9323, 0.9893 and 0.9535 respectively, indicating extensional deformation test with SER very promising. Ductility analyses using final angular strain values indicate that modifiers increase ductility significantly while aging reduces ductility. Additional research is required for testing ultra-violet (UV) aged sample, and a DSR-based SER test specification will be developed subsequently.&quot;</p>

Development of Environmentally-Friendly Stabilization Methods for Transportation Infrastructure Based on Geopolymers

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;Geopolymers (GPs) have received much attention as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to conventional chemical additives, since they can be processed at room temperatures from aqueous solutions by utilizing waste materials (e.g. fly ash) or abundant natural sources (e.g. clay). A collaborative research study is carried out by teams from Texas A&amp;M University (TAMU) and University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) to investigate the effectiveness of GPs for stabilizing base and subgrade materials by considering the strength and shrink-swell characteristics. Two types of clay, obtained from the North Dallas area, were mixed with a potassium-based GP synthesized from metakaolin and silica fume, at a ratio of 8 wt% of dry geopolymer to dry soil, and cured for a period of 7 days. Moisture-density relationship tests conducted show that treated soils have a higher optimum moisture content and lower maximum dry density as compared to untreated soils. Treated soils exhibited significant reduction in shrinkage and swell properties as compared to untreated soils. Additionally, unconfined compression strength tests also show an increase in strength of treated soils.&quot;</p>

Scots pine log end face images for developing identity matching methods for tree logs

<p>For developing log identification methods, i.e., "face recognition" methods for log individuals, a total of 493 unique Scots pine logs were photographed to create this data set of 4930 log end face images.</p> <p>The photography was completed in two sessions, each lasting one working day. In the first session, each log was photographed from five different perspectives: directly head-on, plus four other imaging angles. In the second session, which took place five days later, the same photography procedure was repeated for each log.</p> <p>The data is structured into directories as &lt;log number&gt;/&lt;imaging day&gt;/&lt;angle index&gt;.jpg, where &lt;log number&gt; is the uniquely identifying number for each individual log, imaging day is either 01 (meaning the first imaging session) or 02 (meaning the second imaging session), and angle index is an integer from 0 (the direct head-shot image) to 4, where indeces from 1 to 4 signify the other imaging angles besides the direct head-on perspective.</p> <p>Please see the publication at&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atech.2023.100201">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atech.2023.100201</a> for more details.</p>

Data from: Novel methods to define invasive procedures at the end-of-life were developed to improve quality of end of life care research: A population-based cohort study in colorectal cancer

<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>Understanding the use of invasive procedures (IPs) at the end-of-life (EoL) is important to avoid under- and overtreatment, but epidemiologic analysis is hampered by limited methods to define treatment intent and EoL phase. This study applied novel methods to report IPs at the EoL using a colorectal cancer (CRC) case study.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong></p> <p>An English population-based cohort of adult patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2015 was used with follow-up to 2018. Procedure intent (curative, non-curative, diagnostic) by cancer site and stage at diagnosis was classified by two surgeons independently. Joinpoint regression modelled weekly rates of IPs for 36 sub-cohorts of patients with incremental survival of 0-36 months. EoL phase was defined by a significant IP rate change before death. Zero-inflated Poisson regression explored associations between IP rates and clinical/sociodemographic variables.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>Of 87,731 patients included, 41,972 (48%) died. 9,492 procedures were classified by intent (interrater agreement 99.8%). Patients received 502,895 IPs (1.39 and 3.36 per person year for survivors and decedents). Joinpoint regression identified significant increases in IPs four weeks before death in those living 3-6 months, and eight weeks before death in those living 7–36 months from diagnosis. 7,908 (18.8%) patients underwent IPs at the EoL, with stoma formation the most common major procedure. Younger age, early-stage disease, men, lower comorbidity, those receiving chemotherapy and living longer from diagnosis were associated with IPs.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p> <p>Methods to identify and classify IPs at the EoL were developed and tested within a CRC population. This approach can be now extended and validated to identify potential under- and overtreatment. </p>

Data from: genetic resources of macroalgae: development of an efficient method using microsatellite markers in non-model organisms

<p><span>Red and brown seaweeds are species with high ecological and economic importance. Here we report the feasibility of cost-effective molecular marker development in 6 species from different clades. Microsatellites markers of two brown seaweed species <em>Alaria esculenta</em>, <em>Pylaiella littoralis</em>, and of four red seaweed species <em>Calliblepharis jubata</em>, <em>Gracilaria gracilis</em>, <em>Gracilaria dura </em>and <em>Palmaria palmata</em> were identified and characterized using genomic sequences of Double-Digest Restriction site Associated DNA (ddRAD). A total of 64,623,186 reads were generated from two runs of multiplexed Illumina Miseq sequencing for which 30,636 reads containing microsatellites and 15,443 microsatellite loci with primers pairs were found. Five hundred seventy-six primers pairs were selected for amplification trials and levels of polymorphism. From the 338 that gave a positive amplification, 142 primers pairs were polymorphic. For genetic analyses two or three populations per species from 13 different geographic locations were used. A total of 28 usable polymorphic markers for <em>A. esculenta</em>, 18 for <em>P. littoralis</em>, 11 for <em>C. jubata</em>, 14 for <em>G. gracilis</em>, 21 for <em>G. dura </em>and 13 for <em>P. palmata </em>were developed. The overall number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 22. These 105 new microsatellite markers will be useful for further studies of population genetics, breeding programs and conservation genetics of these species. Compared with traditional approaches, our study yielded thousands of microsatellite loci in a short tim</span><span>e with affordable costs in six different species. This study based on ddRAD-sequencing for the development of microsatellite markers provides preliminary data u</span><span>sing a few individuals from two distinct populations on the genetic structure and reproduction mode of a non-model species as shown </span>with the detection of clonality for the two red algae, <em>C. jubata </em>and <em>G. dura</em> and the detection of highly genetically divergent populations corresponding probably to different cryptic species under the name of<em> P. littoralis</em>.</p>
