Statue of the Cloister Mother Mary
3D model of a replica of the statue described below. Legend has it that the statue was found in a barn wall on the farm at Skriðuklaustur. Carved from oak, it is 71 cm tall and was probably carved in Northern Europe in the late 15th century. The Holy Mother Mary is sitting on a chair, wearing a crown, and holding the baby Jesus on her knee. The wood was originally partly painted in blue and red. In 1950 the National Museum of Iceland purchased the statue from the collection of Pike Ward, who collected it sometime around 1900. The statue is believed to have stemmed from the Cloister church because, like the monastery itself, the church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Furthermore, 17th- and 18th-century church audits mention that there was a statue of Mary there. The original is kept at the National Museum of Iceland and the replica is kept at the Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute. Mandrill mothers associate with infants who look like their own offspring using phenotype matching
<p>Behavioral discrimination of kin is a key process structuring social relationships in animals. In this study, we provide a first example of discrimination towards non-kin by third-parties through a mechanism of phenotype matching. In mandrills, we recently demonstrated increased facial resemblance among paternally-related juvenile and adult females indicating adaptive opportunities for paternal kin recognition. Here, we hypothesize that mothers use offspring's facial resemblance with other infants to guide offspring's social opportunities towards similarly-looking ones. Using deep learning for face recognition in 80 wild mandrill infants, we first show that infants born to the same father or conceived during the tenure of the same alpha male resemble each other the most, independently of their age, sex or maternal origin, extending previous results to the youngest age class. Using long-term behavioral observations on association patterns and controlling for matrilineal origin, maternal relatedness and infant age and sex, we then demonstrate that, as hypothesized, mothers are spatially closer to infants that resemble their own offspring more, thereby facilitating associations among similar-looking infants. Using theoretical modeling, we describe a plausible evolutionary process whereby mothers gain fitness benefits by promoting nepotism among paternally related infants. This mechanism, that we call "second order kin selection", may extend beyond mother-infant interactions and has the potential to explain cooperative behaviors among non-kin in social species, including humans.</p>

Distinguishing mutations and null alleles from genotyping errors using mother progeny comparisons in Brazilian pine (Araucaria angustifolia)
The use of microsatellite markers provides a window into the evolutionary processes of a given species. As such, these markers are widely used in scientific and applied research and are praised for their practicality and ease of use, however, the unavoidable incidence of genotyping deviations has been broadly neglected in the literature. Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate the rate of null alleles, mutations and genotyping errors in microsatellite loci, using Araucaria angustifolia, a threatened species, as a case study. We estimated the rates of the different types of genotyping deviations using mother-progeny genotype comparison from 50 seed-trees and their respective progeny (seeds). A total of 2336 A. angustifolia samples were genotyped, and we found that the rate of null alleles was 0.045. From the 1972 mother-progeny comparisons, the overall genotype deviation rate was 1.58%, consisting of 145 inconsistences (mutations), 339 null alleles and 210 genotyping errors. In terms of seed numbers, 128 (6.5%) showed inconsistencies in at least one locus, 118 (6.0%) null alleles, and 321 (16.3%) genotyping errors. This is the first study to describe the inconsistences (mutations) between mother-progeny genotypes for A. angustifolia, and the outcome makes it clear that an understanding of these genotyping deviations must be considered in assessing the accuracy of inferences made based on population genetics analyses.

This averages are performed for each energy chanel of the EPT (6 for electrons and 10 for protons). Differential fluxes are given in [(s cm² sr MeV)^-1].</p> <p>Similar to the EPT files, the POES files contain electrons and proton fluxes from the MEPED instrument on board MetOp3 averaged on the same grid as the EPT fluxes. In this case proton fluxes are differential fluxes in units of [(s cm² sr keV)^-1] whereas electron fluxes are integral fluxes in units of [(s cm² sr)^-1].</p> <p>GOES file contains the integral proton fluxes observed by GOES from May 1st to June 30th 2024. Compiled comparative data and the R code from: "Why do some primate mothers carry their infant's corpse? A cross-species comparative study"
<p>Non-human primates respond to the death of a conspecific in diverse ways, some of which may present phylogenetic continuity with human thanatological responses. Of these responses, infant corpse carrying by mothers (ICC) is the most frequently reported. Despite its prevalence, quantitative analyses of this behaviour are scarce and inconclusive. We compiled a database of 409 published cases across 50 different primate species of mothers' responses to their infants' deaths and used Bayesian phylogenetic regressions with an information-theoretic approach to test hypotheses proposed to explain between- and within-species variation in ICC. We found that ICC was more likely when the infant's death was non-traumatic (e.g. illness) versus traumatic (e.g. infanticide), and when the mother was younger. These results support the death detection hypothesis, which proposes that ICC occurs when there are fewer contextual or sensory cues indicating death. Such an interpretation suggests that primates are able to attain an awareness of death. In addition, when carried, infant age affected ICC duration, with longer ICC observed for younger infants. This result suggests that ICC is a by-product of strong selection on maternal behaviour. The findings are discussed in the context of the evolution of emotion, and implications for evolutionary thanatology are proposed.</p>
Phase-contrast time-lapses of seven bacterial species growing in microfluidic mother machine traps
<p>This dataset and software accompany the article "Rapid label-free identification of seven bacterial species using microfluidics, single-cell time-lapse phase-contrast microscopy, and deep learning-based image and video classification" for reproducing the results.</p> <p>In the study, deep-learning models are trained to classify phase-contrast videos (time-lapses) of bacteria growing in microfluidic chip traps. The dataset consists of lab isolates of the species Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The video clips have around 30 frames each, captured during one hour of growth (2 minutes between each frame). The whole dataset consists of around 620,000 images from 19,500 traps.</p> <p>Additionally, the package contains software to re-run the experiments, generate output metrics, and build the graphs in the article.</p>

A meta-analysis of pre-pregnancy maternal body mass index and placental DNA methylation identifies 27 CpG sites with implications for mother-child health
<p>Higher maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (ppBMI) is associated with increased neonatal morbidity, as well as with pregnancy complications and metabolic outcomes in offspring later in life. Placenta is a key organ in fetal development and has been proposed to act as a mediator between the mother and different health outcomes in children. The overall aim of the present work is to investigate the association of ppBMI with epigenome-wide placental DNA methylation (DNAm) in 10 studies from the PACE consortium, amounting to 2,631 mother-child pairs. We identify 27 CpG sites at which we observe placental DNAm variations of up to 2.0% per 10 ppBMI-unit. The CpGs that are differentially methylated in placenta do not overlap with CpGs identified in previous studies in cord blood DNAm related to ppBMI. Many of the identified CpGs are located in open sea regions, are often close to obesity-related genes such as GPX1 and LGR4 and altogether, are enriched in cancer and oxidative stress pathways. Mother-to-daughter transmission of hygiene in mandrills
<p>Social animals are particularly exposed to infectious diseases. Pathogen-driven selection pressure has thus favoured the evolution of behavioural adaptations to decrease transmission risk, such as "social distancing". Yet, such strategy might deprive individuals from valuable social interactions, generating a cost-benefit trade-off between pathogen avoidance and social opportunities. Recent studies revealed that hosts differ in the expression of these behavioural defences but the determinants driving such inter-individual variation remain poorly understood. Using 5 years of detailed behavioural and parasite data obtained on a large natural population of non-human primates, we show that, during grooming interactions, some female mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) consistently avoid their conspecifics' peri-anal region, where oro-faecally transmitted gastro-intestinal parasites accumulate, while others do not. This hygienic trait is further highly repeatable across the years and hygienic females are less parasitized on average than non-hygienic females. While age, dominance rank and sociality level do not influence hygienic tendencies, close maternal kin exhibit similar levels of hygiene suggesting social inheritance from mothers to daughters. Our study thus emphasizes that social inheritance of hygienic tendencies may structure behavioural resistance to pathogens in host populations, with unforeseen consequences on the dynamics of infectious diseases.</p>
