Results of the poll in the study "Information Scientists' Motivations for Research Data Sharing and Reuse"
<p>This is a dataset with results of the poll conducted in the study “Information Scientists’ Motivations for Research Data Sharing and Reuse”.</p> <p>In terms of the Uses and Gratifications Theory (Questions 1 and 2), the most popular uses relate to the categories of research support and information. Researchers share, or would share, their research data in general for any reusability purposes and especially for combination of different datasets to produce new evidence. Also, the vast majority of study participants associate research data sharing with possibilities to accelerate scientific progress and to increase research efficiency. In case of research data reuse, all the researchers indicated that they use, or would use, others’ data first of all for inspiration. Interestingly, study participants put relatively high the category of recognition in case of sharing, but at the same time they do not associate increased recognition among colleagues and other researchers with research data reuse. The remaining categories belonging to the categories of self-esteem and social interaction, i.e. increased citation level and visibility of the research as well as enhanced scientific reputation, possible cooperations and co-authorship, were selected only by few respondents. Also remarkably, data reuse is more frequently linked to entertainment then data sharing. </p> <p>In terms of the Self-Determination Theory (Questions 3 and 4), all but one of the interviewees indicated that they have shared or would share their research data because it can accelerate scientific progress which they consider important and would like to contribute to it (i.e., identified regulation). The second most popular motivation turned out to be the obligation by employer, project funder and/or journals (i.e., external regulation). The third most popular option was social influence, i.e. because many other researchers participate in data sharing and they feel obligated to do the same (i.e., external regulation).This way, the participants demonstrate a mixture of identified motivation and external regulation, both material and social. In the case of data reuse, the participants demonstrate more homogeneous results with identification and intrinsic motivation having most of the votes. The role of external regulation seems to be much less important as in the case with data sharing. So, researchers reuse, or would reuse, research data because it can accelerate scientific progress which is important for them. Additionally, researchers enjoy exploring and using third party research data. Thus, interviewees participate or would participate in data sharing because they consider it important, but also feel or are obliged to do so. At the same time, study participants do not feel pressure from outside when deciding whether to reuse data or not.</p> <p>For more information about the study and its results, please read the article “Information Scientists’ Motivations for Research Data Sharing and Reuse” by Shutsko and Stock (2023).</p>

Data for Say it aloud: Measuring change talk and user perceptions in an automated, technology-delivered adaptation of motivational interviewing delivered by video-counsellor
<p>Two of three datasets from study where participants engaged in a spoken 'dialogue' with a pre-recorded video counsellor asking open questions to promote behaviour change. </p> <p><strong>interview length and change talk results.csv</strong> reports duration of dialogue and number of instances of change talk and sustain talk detected by human coders in each participant's speech. Transcripts of participants' speech are not uploaded because we did not request participants' consent for sharing. When designing the study, we did not know if people would feel comfortable speaking aloud to the computer; we did not want to make them feel more self-conscious by knowing their speech would shared. The data are from 16 of 18 participants; two were excluded for not talking about a goal to increase physical activity, which was a requirement of the study.</p> <p>Version 1.0 contains ratings of the number of instances of change and sustain talk, which required the coder to judge when a complex statement should be scored as containing more than one instance. Version 2.0 was created in response to a reviewer's suggestion that coders should simply score the presence or absence of change and sustain talk. The new dataset presents the agreed scoring of two independent coders who scored whether change or sustain talk were present in each participant's response to each question posed by the video-counsellor. </p> <p><strong>Questionnaire Units of Analysis.docx</strong> contains participants' written responses to an evaluation questionnaire completed one week after the interview. These responses were the raw material for thematic analysis. This dataset contains responses from 18 participants, including participants 7 and 11 who did not talk about a goal of physical activity when interacting with the video-counsellor.</p> <p> </p>
Data from: Priorities and motivations of marine coastal restoration research
<p>Active restoration is becoming an increasingly important conservation intervention to counteract the degradation of marine coastal ecosystems. <a name="_Hlk39173233">Understanding what has motivated the scientific community to research the restoration of marine coastal ecosystems and how restoration research projects are funded is essential if we want to scale-up restoration interventions to meaningful extents.</a><a name="_Hlk39173099">Here, we systematically review and synthesize data to understand the motivations for research on the restoration of coral reefs, seagrass, mangroves, saltmarsh, and oyster reefs. We base this analysis off a published database of marine restoration studies, originally designed to estimate the cost and feasibility of marine coastal restoration, derived from mostly scientific studies published in peer-reviewed and some grey literature. For the present study, the database was updated with fields aimed at assessing the motivations, outcomes, and funding sources for each project. </a>We classify restoration motivations into five categories: biotic, experimental, idealistic, legislative, and pragmatic. Moreover, we evaluate the variables measured and outcomes reported by the researchers and evaluate whether projects adhered to the Society for Ecological Restoration's (SER) standards for the practice of ecological restoration. <a name="_Hlk39174556">The most common motivation of the scientific community to study restoration in marine coastal ecosystems was experimental i.e. to seek experimental data to answer ecological research questions or improve restoration approach, as expected since mostly peer-reviewed literature was evaluated here. There were differences in motivations among the five coastal ecosystems. For instance, biodiversity enhancement was the most common case for a biotic motivation in mangrove restoration projects</a>. The most common metrics evaluated were growth/productivity, survivorship, habitat function, physical attributes and reproduction. For most ecosystems, ecological outcomes were frequently reported, with socio-economic implications of the restoration rarely mentioned, except for mangroves. Projects were largely funded by governmental grants with some investment from private donations, non-governmental organizations, and the involvement of volunteers. Our findings and database provide critical data to align future research of the scientific community with the real social, economic and policy needs required to scale-up marine coastal restoration projects.</p>
Data from: Combining role-play with interactive simulation to motivate informed climate action: evidence from the World Climate simulation
Climate change communication efforts grounded in the information deficit model have largely failed to close the gap between scientific and public understanding of the risks posed by climate change. In response, simulations have been proposed to enable people to learn for themselves about this complex and politically charged topic. Here we assess the impact of a widely-used simulation, World Climate, which combines a socially and emotionally engaging role-play with interactive exploration of climate change science through the C-ROADS climate simulation model. Participants take on the roles of delegates to the UN climate negotiations and are challenged to create an agreement that meets international climate goals. Their decisions are entered into C-ROADS, which provides immediate feedback about expected global climate impacts, enabling them to learn about climate change while experiencing the social dynamics of negotiations. We assess the impact of World Climate by analyzing pre- and post-survey results from >2,000 participants in 39 sessions in eight nations. We find statistically significant gains in three areas: (i) knowledge of climate change causes, dynamics and impacts; (ii) affective engagement including greater feelings of urgency and hope; and (iii) a desire to learn and do more about climate change. Contrary to the deficit model, gains in urgency were associated with gains in participants' desire to learn more and intent to act, while gains in climate knowledge were not. Gains were just as strong among American participants who oppose government regulation of free markets - a political ideology that has been linked to climate change denial in the US - suggesting the simulation's potential to reach across political divides. The results indicate that World Climate offers a climate change communication tool that enables people to learn and feel for themselves, which together have the potential to motivate action informed by science.

Laypeople in Fire Protection: Their Motivation, Their Emotions, Their Value
<p>This online supplement contains a dataset (raw data) collected in a study by the University of Münster, Germany, as well as supplementary study materials, and the online appendix of our paper including additional results. The study is part of a larger research project (<a href="https://www.brawa.ovgu.de/en/">https://www.brawa.ovgu.de/en/</a>) and examined the motivation, emotions, and behavior of laypeople in fire protection.</p><p>Fire events, a specific type of emergency situation, occur regularly and often cost people's lives. Early fire detection and involvement of (trained) laypeople in very early stages is essential, especially in fire-prone historical buildings. In an interview study (N = 25) and a quantification study (N = 238), we examined laypeople's motivation to help, their emotions, and their value – especially regarding behaviors – during fires. In Study 1, based on in-depth interviews using the critical incident technique, we inductively developed three category systems: 1) Key motivators included one's emotional bond to the object, altruism, self-protection, and self-efficacy. 2) Laypeople's emotions, such as stress at first but also calmness, were categorized. 3) We also found that laypeople's primary value during fire incidents was their ability to provide support, e.g., knowledge of the building. In Study 2, we found quantitative support for the findings derived from Study 1. Additionally, we compared laypeople's and experts' assessments and compared reactions depending on fire size. Thus, our research shifts the focus from evacuation to active – and safe – involvement of laypeople. Our results are helpful for executives in emergency management, as they may find value in including laypeople when coping with emergencies.</p><p>The ethics committee of the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science of the University of Münster approved the studies (under ID 2021-30-MT and ID 2021-14-MT) and we preregistered them with aspredicted.org (available at <a href="https://aspredicted.org/dd2p8.pdf">https://aspredicted.org/dd2p8.pdf</a> and <a href="https://aspredicted.org/m6zh5.pdf">https://aspredicted.org/m6zh5.pdf</a>). Relationships between needs satisfaction and the quality of motivation with academic engagement in pre-service physical education teachers
<p><span>Academic engagement has been identified as a key determinant in the learning process. Although research on initial teacher education has focused on understanding the mechanism that can foster strong academic engagement, little is known about the roles that basic psychological need satisfaction and academic motivation may perform. The objective of this research was to examine the predictive relationships between basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness, and novelty) and academic engagement, considering the role of academic motivation. A cross-sectional and non-randomized design was used. A total of 920 students (61.8% male; <em>M</em><sub>age </sub>= 24.73; <em>SD </em><sub>age </sub>=5.34) participated from different universities. The results from structural equation modelling revealed that competence and novelty satisfaction significantly and positively predicted academic engagement. Autonomous motivation significantly mediated the association of competence and autonomy satisfaction with academic engagement. This research underscores the importance of considering competence and autonomy satisfaction as facilitators of autonomous motivation and academic engagement in pre-service teachers. </span></p>
The characteristics, motivations, and experiences of foster caregivers at animal shelters
<p>Foster care programs at animal shelters have emerged as an important tool for promoting animal welfare and supporting shelter life-saving efforts. Preliminary evidence suggests that foster caregiving may also be health-promoting for humans. The goals of this study were to investigate the experiences of foster caregivers at animal shelters based on measures of positive and negative affect, quality of life, and grief, and to describe human-animal attachment among foster populations. Between March 2022 and 2023, 131 foster caregivers from five shelters in the United States completed three online surveys before, during and after providing foster care to a shelter animal. Positive affect decreased significantly from baseline to post-foster (F=5.71, p<0.01), particularly among dog caregivers (F=6.17, p<0.01). Negative affect remained unchanged (F=0.47, p=0.63). Foster caregivers perceived their foster animal provided companionship, affection and emotional support, although dog foster caregivers reported significantly higher emotional (U=313.50, p<0.01) and social/physical quality of life (t=4.42, p<0.01) than cat foster caregivers. Caregivers reported low mean avoidant and anxious attachment, suggesting they were able to develop secure bonds with their foster animals. Retention of fosters was also strong, with 86% of caregivers reporting they were likely to provide foster care in the future. Our findings suggest that fostering at animal shelters may serve as a One Health intervention to offer companionship, affection and emotional support to human caregivers while promoting animal welfare. However, these benefits did not translate to improvements in caregiver mental wellbeing, so caution should be applied when considering foster caregiving as a potential mental health promotion tool.</p>
Wow Nature Motivation Survey
<p>The Wow Nature motivation study was conducted within the ongoing H2020 project named <a href="https://actionproject.eu/">ACTION</a> (pArticipatory sCience Toolkit agaInst pollutiON) on citizen science. Volunteers participate to citizen science initiatives for multiple reasons: personal enjoyment, desire for improvement or achievement, establishment of personal relationships, care for the environment, etc.<br> Studying motivation and investigating the factors influencing people participation to citizen science projects is an essential aspect in the analysis of citizen science communities. Understanding the reasons that foster people to engage can support the successful design and implementation of effective participant involvement tasks, as well as pave the way for long-term engagement.<br> The goal of the study is to analyse the motivation to participate of a specific citizen science community focused on fighting air pollution in the Wow Nature pilot supported by the ACTION project.
