Resolution of the house mouse (Mus musculus) phylogeny by integration over isolation-with-migration histories
The three main subspecies of house mice, Mus musculus castaneus, Mus musculus domesticus , and Mus musculus musculus, are estimated to have diverged ~325-500KYA. Resolution of the details of their evolutionary history is complicated by their relatively recent divergence, ongoing gene flow among the subspecies, and complex demographic histories. Previous studies have been limited to some extent by the number of loci surveyed and/or by the scope of the method used. Here we apply a method (IMa3) that provides an estimate of a population phylogeny while allowing for complex histories of gene exchange. Results strongly support a topology with M. m. domesticus as sister to M. m. castaneus and M. m. musculus . In addition, we find significant evidence of reciprocal gene flow between all pairs of subspecies. Our estimates of another key set of parameters, effective population size ( N e ), support previous results that the N e of M. m. castaneus is larger than that of the other two subspecies.
Data from: Fitness consequences of female alternative reproductive tactics in house mice (Mus musculus domesticus)
Alternative reproductive tactics are defined as discrete differences in morphological, physiological and/or behavioral traits associated with reproduction, which occur within the same sex and population. House mice provide a rare example for alternative reproductive tactics in females, which can either rear their young solitarily, or together with one or several other females in a communal nest. We assessed the fitness consequences of communal and solitary breeding in a wild population to understand how the two tactics can be evolutionarily stable. Females switched between the two tactics (with more than 50% of all females having two or more litters using both tactics), pointing towards communal and solitary breeding being two tactics within a single strategy and not two genetically determined strategies. Communal breeding resulted in reduced pup survival and negatively impacted female reproductive success. Older and likely heavier females more often reared their litters solitarily, indicating that females use a condition dependent strategy. Solitary breeding seems the more successful tactic and only younger and likely less competitive females might opt for communal nursing, even at the cost of increased pup mortality. This study emphasizes the importance of analyzing phenotypic plasticity and its role in cooperation in the context of female ARTs.
Data from: Phylogeography of Chinese house mice (Mus musculus musculus/castaneus): distribution, routes of colonization and geographic regions of hybridization
Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the biogeographic history of Chinese house mice based on data from mtDNA control region sequences and 10 microsatellite loci in 535 individuals sampled from 29 localities. Phylogenetic analyses revealed two distinct evolutionary lineages corresponding to M. m. castaneus in the South and M. m. musculus in the North, with the Yangtze River roughly representing the boundary between these subspecies. More detailed analyses using published sequence data from mice sampled in neighboring countries revealed the migration routes of the two subspecies into China: M. m. castaneus appears to have migrated through a southern route (Yunnan and Guangxi), while M. m. musculus entered China from Kazakhstan through the northwest border (Xinjiang). Bayesian analyses of mitochondrial sequences indicated rapid population expansions in both subspecies, approximately 4,650-9,300 years ago for M. m. castaneus and approximately 7,150-14,300 years ago for M. m. musculus. Interestingly, the migration routes of Chinese house mice coincide with the colonization routes of modern humans into China, and the expansion times of house mice are consistent with the development of agriculture in southern China and northern China respectively. Finally, our study confirmed the existence of a hybrid zone between M. m. castaneus and M. m. musculus near the Yangtze River. Further study of this hybrid zone will provide a useful counterpart to the well-studied hybrid zone between M. m. musculus and M. m. domesticus in central Europe.
Data from: Using the Mus musculus hybrid zone to assess covariation and genetic architecture of limb bone lengths
Two subspecies of the house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus and Mus musculus musculus, meet in a narrow contact zone across Europe. Mice in the hybrid zone are highly admixed, representing the full range of mixed ancestry from the two subspecies. Given the distinct morphologies of these subspecies, these natural hybrids can be used for genome-wide association mapping at sufficiently high resolution to directly infer candidate genes. We focus here on limb bone length differences, which is of special interest for understanding the evolution of developmentally correlated traits. We used 172 first-generation descendants of wild-caught mice from the hybrid zone to measure the length of stylopod (humerus / femur), zeugopod (ulna / tibia) and autopod (metacarpal / metatarsal) elements in skeletal CT scans. We find phenotypic covariation between limb elements in the hybrids similar to patterns previously described in M. m. domesticus inbred strains, suggesting that the hybrid genotypes do not influence the covariation pattern in a major way. Mapping was performed using 143,592 SNPs and identified several genomic regions associated with length differences in each bone. Each candidate region explains only a small proportion of phenotypic variance, suggesting that bone length is highly polygenic. None of the candidate regions includes the canonical genes known to control embryonic limb development. Instead, we are able to identify candidate genes with known roles in osteoblast differentiation and bone structure determination, as well as recently evolved genes of, as yet, unknown function.
