Tree census, demography, and exposed canopy area data at the Coweeta LTER Terrestrial Gradient Sites, Coweeta Hydrological Laboratory, Otto, NC from 1993 to 2016
The five Terrestrial Gradient sites were established in the early 1990s as part of the 1990 Coweeta LTER Renewal. The original terrestrial gradient sites were 20 x 40-m. In the late 1990s the plots were expanded to 80 x 80-m and later (around 1998) they were slope-corrected by Clark's lab using survey equipment. Much of the Coweeta LTER “core” datasets have been collected from the gradient plots. This study is one of the long-term studies that are ongoing with defined sampling intervals. The tree demography and census study consists of trees census every two years and seeds collected ~5 x each year.

Intensive Stream Survey Geomorphology Data from 2010 to 2011 at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, Otto, NC
From June 2010 until February 2011, fifty streams were surveyed to determine the physical characteristics of streams in forested, traditional land use, and developed settings. Cross-sectional measurements were taken at 16 cross-sections on each reach. The distance between each cross-section was twice the average active channel width (which was determined prior to the survey). At one to three locations within each surveyed reach, slope was determined by placing a laser level at a location upstream and then measuring the amount of elevation change at the water surface. Between each cross-section, the instream habitat was recorded. Large woody debris was measured where it was found within the surveyed reach of the stream. Only LWD with diameter >10 cm was measured. At a representative riffle within the reach, a Wolman pebble count (100 randomly selected pieces of sediment) was taken.
Water Level and Water Temperature Measurements from Lower Jones Creek, Macon County, NC.
This data set contains water level and water temperature measurements from Lower Jones Creek, Macon County, NC. Using a pressure transducer, measurements are taken every 60 seconds with the average, minimum, and maximum values for water pressure and water temperature saved to the output data table hourly. Water level is calculated hourly using the hourly average water pressure, and saved to the online data files.
Stream salamander mark-recapture abundance study at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, Otto, NC.
Mark-recapture data of the stream-dwelling plethodontid salamander species located in six streams within the Coweeta LTER site. The data covers the periods of May to August 2007 and 2008. Animals were either captured and given an individual mark using elastomer dye, or simply counted if animals were too small in size to mark. Animals were captured within 10, 1 m^2 plots within each stream using a 40 X 40 cm mesh bag filled with hardwood leaf litter, or by dipnet within each plot. Animals were identified, measured, marked, and released directly following capture.
Stated Choice Experiment to measure willingness to pay for stream health improvements in Macon County, NC, 2012-2013
We ran a survey with a random sample of 3500 residents in Macon County, NC. We drew the sample from a total of 26993 parcels identified in the Macon County tax data. We ran the survey between September 2012 and February 2013 and had a response rate of 40.8%. The survey included a stated choice experiment designed to measure willingness to pay for stream health improvements in the region. The survey also included a set of auxiliary questions to assess general preferences for land management and relevant environmental characteristics.
Weather Measurements from the metro area of Franklin, NC
This data set contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, and rainfall from sites located throughout the metro area of Franklin, North Carolina. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation are measured every 60 seconds with average, minimum, maximum, and discrete top of the hour values saved to the output data hourly. Wind direction is measured every 60 seconds with the average value saved to the output data table every hour. Hourly rainfall is totalized and a continuous 24 hour rainfall value is calculated. Calculations for evapotranspiration, dew point, heat index, wind chill, and wind vector are calculated hourly and saved to the output data table.

This data set contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, and rainfall from a site located above the Cullasaja River near Highlands, North Carolina. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation are measured every 60 seconds with average, minimum, maximum, and discrete top of the hour values saved to the output data hourly. Wind direction is measured every 60 seconds with the average value saved to the output data table every hour. Hourly rainfall is totalized and a continuous 24 hour rainfall value is calculated. Evapotranspiration is also calculated.

These locations and plots were used to collect samples of various matrices for numerous analyses at differing intervals. Clovis (NC-117 a5)
Clovis points are lanceolate shaped projectile points with concave bases that often have pronounced flutes, or channel flakes, removed from one or both sides. Clovis dates to the Early Paleoindian period (13,300-12,700 BP) and are among the oldest artifacts found in North America. While Clovis points were long thought to represent the earliest human presence in North America, a growing body of evidence from multiple sites points to earlier "Pre-Clovis" occupations. This Clovis was found in Harnett County, NC (31HT201) and donated to the Office of State Archaeology (Accession no. 2013.0682a5). It is made out of grey chert and measures 48.2 mm long, 24.0mm wide, and 7mm thick and weighs 9.7 grams. This model was constructed by David Cranford with 53 photos using Agisoft Metashape software. Hardaway Side-Notched (NC-317)
This stone projectile point is known as a Hardaway Side-Notched and it is typically identified by its recurved base and U-shaped side notches that create its distinctive "horned appearance". The Hardaway Side-Notched point type is associated with the transitional Late Paleoindian/Early Archaic Period (c. 8000-7500 BC) and was first described by Joffre Coe from specimens excavated at the famous Hardaway site (31ST4) in Stanly County, NC. This type of artifact was used as a spear or dart point and likely was secondarily used as a knife and/or scraping tool. This particular point is made from a metavolcanic stone commonly called rhyolite and has been re-sharpened many times. It was found at a site (31WA1844) in Wake County, NC and donated to the Office of State Archaeology (Accession no. 2013.0867a1). It measures 30.5 mm long, 27.5 mm wide, and 5.0 mm thick. The structure of a tetrameric septin complex reveals a hydrophobic element essential for NC-interface integrity
<p>The septins of the yeast <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</i> assemble into hetero-octameric rods by alternating interactions between neighboring G-domains or N- and C-termini, respectively. These rods polymerize end to end into apolar filaments, forming a ring beneath the prospective new bud that expands during the cell cycle into an hourglass structure. The hourglass finally splits during cytokinesis into a double ring. Understanding these transitions as well as the plasticity of the higher order assemblies requires a detailed knowledge of the underlying structures.Here we present the first X-ray crystal structure of a tetrameric Shs1-Cdc12-Cdc3-Cdc10 complex at a resolution of 3.2 Å. Close inspection of the NC-interfaces of this and other septin structures reveals a conserved contact motif that is essential for NC-interface integrity of yeast and human septins <i>in</i> <i>vivo</i> and <i>in vitro</i>. Using the tetrameric structure as a template allowed AlphaFold-Multimer to propose a model of the octameric septin rod. </p>
