Very high rate GPS observables at Coeneo, Mexico (UCOE) continously operating station: dataset for the case study. Part 3.
<p>Archived data is on a Trimble raw T02 format from a Trimble NetR9 receiver. Parental behavior influence in pediatric dentistry: a randomized observational study
<p>This work examines the influence of parental attitudes on their child's behavior in pediatric dentistry.</p> <p>This prospective randomized observational study was conducted at the pediatric dentistry consultation. All sessions were filmed. Two experts collected data using the modified Venham scale for children and a hetero-rating scale for parents. 20 observers scored with the same tools a randomized selection of recordings of 5 children per group. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.</p> <p>60 children divided into 3 groups of 20: 4 years and under, 5 to 6 years and over 7 years. Internal validation showed a very high correlation (Cronbach's a> 0.920). There is a correlation between parental behavior and that of children in the dental office in the 3 age groups for observers (Cronbach's a> 0.700). </p>
The role of teriflunamide in multiple sclerosis patient: an observational study
<p>Teriflunomide is a drug with immunosuppressive and selective immunomodulatory action, characterized by anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties. Several clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of this drug in Multiple Sclerosis, estimating a significant improvement in cognitive performance.</p> <p>The aim of our study is to evaluate the effects of teriflunomide by analysing the correlation between brain atrophy and the general cognitive profile and evaluating long-term changes. The effect of teriflunomide was studied in 30 patients with multiple sclerosis and 30 control subjects. Patients underwent a full cognitive profile assessment using the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests and a neuroimaging examination with a 3.0 T working scanner.</p> <p>Our results suggested that treatment with teriflunomide could potentially not only slow down the accumulation of microstructural tissue damage in Grey Matter and With Matter, but also better preserve the cognitive profile, particularly by highlighting the benefits in the memory domain. Thanks to drug therapy, brain volume in our patients has remained constant, leading to improvements in memory, indicating teriflunomide as a neuroprotective potential and further strengthening the evidence of a link between loss of brain volume and cognitive impairment.</p>
Case study data of the paper: A methodological guide to observe local-scale geodiversity for biodiversity research and management
<p><span>Current global environmental change calls for comprehensive and complementing approaches for biodiversity conservation. According to recent research, consideration of the diversity of Earth's abiotic features (i.e., geodiversity) could provide new insights and applications into the investigation and management of biodiversity. However, methods to map and quantify geodiversity at local scale have not been developed although this scale is important for conservation planning. </span><span>Here, we introduce a field methodology for observing plot-scale geodiversity, pilot the method in an Arctic-alpine tundra environment, provide empirical evidence on the plot-scale biodiversity-geodiversity relationship and give guidance for practitioners on the implementation of the method</span><span>.</span></p> <p><span>The field method is based on observation of geofeatures, i.e., elements of geology, geomorphology, and hydrology, from a given area surrounding a location of species observations. As a result, the method provides novel information on the variation of abiotic nature for biodiversity research and management. The method was piloted in northern Norway and Finland by observing geofeatures from 76 sites at three scales (5, 10 and 25 m radii). To explore the relationship between measures of biodiversity and geodiversity, the occurrence of vascular plant species was recorded from 2 m x 2 m plots at the same sites.</span></p> <p><span>According to the results, vascular plant species richness was positively correlated with the richness of geofeatures (R<sub>s</sub> = 0.18–0.59). The connection was strongest in habitats characterized by deciduous shrubs. The method has a high potential for observing geofeatures without extensive geological or geomorphological training or field survey experience and </span><span>could be applied by conservation practitioners</span><span>.</span></p> <p><span>Consideration of geodiversity in understanding, analysing and conserving biodiversity could facilitate environmental management and ensure the long-term sustainability of ecosystem functions. With the developed method, it is possible to cost-efficiently observe the elements of geodiversity that are useful in ecology and biodiversity conservation. Our approach can be adapted in different ecosystems and biodiversity investigations. The method can be adjusted depending on the abiotic conditions, expertise of the observer(s), and the equipment available.</span></p>
Kidney transplantation waiting times and risk of cardiovascular events and mortality: a retrospective observational cohort study in Taiwan
<p>Objectives: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at a high risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs), and kidney transplantation (KT) has been reported to improve risk of CVEs and survival. As the association of KT timing on long-term survival and clinical outcomes remains unclear, we investigated the association of different KT waiting times on clinical outcomes.</p> <p>Design: Retrospective observational cohort study.</p> <p>Setting: We conducted an observational cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Adult patients who initiated kidney transplantation therapy from 1997 to 2013 were included.</p> <p>Participants: A total of 3562 adult patients who initiated uncomplicated KT therapy were included and categorized into four groups according to KT waiting times after ESRD: Group 1 (<1 year), Group 2 (1–3 years), Group 3 (3–6 years), and Group 4 (>6 years).</p> <p>Primary outcome measure: The main outcome was a composite of all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke, based on the primary diagnosis in medical records during hospitalization.</p> <p>Results: Compared with Group 1, the adjusted risk of primary outcome events (all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke) increased by 1.67 times in Group 2 (95% CI: 1.40–2.00; P <0.001), 2.17 times in Group 3 (95% CI: 1.73–2.71; P <0.001), and 3.10 times in Group 4 (95% CI: 2.21–4.35; P <0.001). The rates of primary outcome events were 6.7%, 13.4%, and 14.0% within five years, increasing to 19.5%, 26.3%, and 30.8% within 10 years in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that early KT is associated with superior long-term cardiovascular outcomes compared to late KT in selected ESRD patients receiving uncomplicated KT, suggesting that an early KT could be a better treatment option for ESRD patients who are eligible for transplantation.</p>
The MicroRESUS study: An observational study to examine the effects of circulatory shock and resuscitation on microcirculatory function and mitochondrial respiration after cardiovascular surgery.
<p>Post-cardiotomy shock (PCS) occurs in up to 5% of cardiovascular surgeries and has an in-hospital mortality rate as high as 75%. Physiologic derangements are often multifactorial, including ischemic-reperfusion injury leading to low cardiac output, vasoplegia, hemorrhage, or pericardial tamponade. Resuscitation strategies often target the normalization of systemic hemodynamics, however, practices to achieve standard macrocirculatory goals often fail to reverse microcirculation abnormalities or address cytopathic hypoxia. Perioperative shock may be the result of an imbalance between oxygen delivery and oxygen demand or could be the result of impaired oxygen utilization. This study will examine differences in microcirculatory function and mitochondrial respiration in patients with circulatory shock after cardiovascular surgery.</p>
Comprehensive assessment of postoperative mobility during the first days after mini-invasive lung surgery: A prospective observational study
<p><span>Study Objective</span><span>: </span><span>Postoperative physical therapy and early mobilization are major elements of </span><span>enhanced recovery after surgery. In contrast with supervised physical therapy sessions that can be monitored, self-mobilization is not easily quantifiable and has so far been estimated mainly through patient auto-reports. This study aimed to perform a comprehensive and objective evaluation of postoperative mobility.</span></p> <p><span>Design</span><span>: </span><span>Prospective observational study.</span></p> <p><span>Setting</span><span>: </span><span>Postoperative setting.</span></p> <p><span>Patients</span><span>: </span><span>Patients undergoing mini-invasive lung surgery.</span></p> <p><span>Interventions</span><span>: </span><span>Measurement of postoperative mobility during the five first postoperative days using an accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X).</span></p> <p><span>Measurements</span><span>: </span><span>The primary outcome was the number of daily steps. Secondary outcomes included physical activity duration and intensity, sedentary time, number of breaks in sedentary time, sedentary patterns, daily evaluation by physiotherapists, postoperative complications, and acceptability of wearing the accelerometer. </span></p> <p><span>Main Results: </span><span>Sixty patients were included in the study, of whom 56 provided at least one day of valid accelerometry data. There was no significant change during the first four PODs concerning the number of daily steps nor the mean cadence. One-minute cadence peak, total activity counts, and duration of light-intensity physical activity increased over time (P = 0.032, P = 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively). </span><span>Sedentary patterns changed favorably over time, with a decrease in prolonged sedentary bouts (≥ 60 consecutive min), and an increase in shorter bouts (< 10 min) (</span><span>P </span><span>< 0.001). Similar results were observed when analysis was adjusted for the day of the week when the surgery took place except for daily sedentary time (P = 0.055). The median acceptability of wearing the accelerometer was excellent (median 10 [9-10] on a 10-point Likert scale). Three patients had major complications. </span></p> <p><span>Conclusions: </span><span>Our findings suggest that daily steps may not be the most relevant indicator of early mobility following thoracic surgery and that accelerometry is suitable to follow patient's early postoperative activity.</span></p>
Comparative observational study of gastric content in women scheduled for caesarean section or operative hysteroscopy: The ECHOCESAR study
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><em><span>Objective:</span></em><span> There is a large literature concerning the estimation of gastric content in third-trimester pregnant women but their conclusions remain contradictory. Our objective was to compare gastric content in pr</span><span>egnant women and in non-pregnant ones using gastric ultrasound. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Design: </span></em><span>An observational two centres study was designed.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><em><span>Methods:</span></em><span> The antral cross-sectional area (CSA) in the semi-recumbent position (SRP), primary outcome, and in the right lateral position (RLD) were measured in pregnant women scheduled for a caesarean section (CS group) or non-pregnant women who underwent hysteroscopy (HS group) just before surgery. Perlas' score was also evaluated.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><em><span>Results:</span></em><span> One hundred and twenty-six patients were analysed, 61 patients in the CS group and 65 in the HS group. Antral CSA, measured in the SRP, was greater in the CS group than in the HS group (350 mm2 [236 - 415] vs 247 mm2 [180 - 318]; (P=0.001). This difference remained significant when the analysis was adjusted for fasting duration (P<0.001) or anxiety (P=0.001) or both (P<0.001). Among secondary outcomes, Perlas scores did not differ between groups (P=0.860). Concordance between antral CSA, categorised as corresponding to an empty or full stomach, and Perlas score was very poor.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing"><em><span>Conclusions: </span></em><span>Our results bring arguments to consider that individuals among pregnant women could have a delayed gastric emptying and support performing a gastric ultrasound in term pregnant patients prior to general anaesthesia.</span></p>

"COVID toes": a meta-analysis of case and observational studies on clinical, histopathological and laboratory findings.
<p><strong>Background: </strong>Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is related to several extrapulmonary disorders; however, little is known about the clinical, laboratory and histopathological characteristics of pernio-like skin lesions associated with COVID-19 infection. <strong>Objective: </strong>To evaluate and summarize the clinical, laboratory and histopathological characteristics of pernio-like lesions reported in the literature. <strong>Methods: </strong>We conducted a search of the PubMed, SciELO and ScienceDirect databases for articles published between 1 January 2020 and 30 November 2020, following the PRISMA recommendations (PROSPERO registration ID: CRD42020225055). The target population was individuals with suspected or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 with pernio-like lesions. Observational studies, research letters and case/series reports were all eligible for inclusion. Observational studies were evaluated using a random-effects model to calculate the weighted mean prevalence, overall mean and 95% confidence interval. We evaluated case studies using the chi-square test for dichotomous variables and the Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables. <strong>Results:</strong> A total of 187 patients from case reports and 715 patients from 18 observational studies were included. The mean age of patients was 16.6 (14.5–18.8) years. Feet were affected in 91.4% (87.0–94.4%) of patients in observational studies. The proportion of patients with a positive RT-PCR test was less than 15%. Lesion topography and morphology were associated with age. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Lesions mostly occurred in pediatric patients, and the morphological characteristics tended to differ between pediatric and non-pediatric populations. There is a possible multifactorial component in lesion pathophysiology. The non-positivity of laboratory tests does not exclude an association with COVID-19. Chilblain-like lesions may be a late manifestation of COVID-19.</p>
Risk of bias in observational studies using routinely collected data of comparative effectiveness research: a meta-research study
<p>We performed a meta-research study by searching PubMed for comparative effectiveness observational studies evaluating therapeutic interventions using routinely collected data published in high impact factor journals from 01/06/2018 to 30/06/2020. We assessed the reporting of study design (i.e., eligibility, treatment assignment, and the start of follow-up). Risk of selection bias and immortal time bias was determined by assessing if the time of eligibility, treatment assignment and the start of follow-up were synchronised to mimic the randomisation following the target trial emulation framework.</p>
