Sentiment Polarity of Programmers in an Open Source Software Project: An Exploratory Study
<p>Context: During the implementation of issues filed in open source software projects, programmers engage and interact in discussions on how to implement them. These discussions provide evidence to investigate emotionally loaded practices embraced by programmers. They interact to explain their point of view regarding the project and the issue under analysis. Objective: Analyze programmers sentiment polarity in an open source software project having releases as a reference for the analysis. Methods: We conducted an exploratory study to characterize the sentiment polarity of comments registered in issues associated with releases of the Moby open source software project. Results: The quantitative analysis identified sentiment polarity variations throughout consecutive releases in line with specific functionalities. Based on a qualitative analysis, we identified these functionalities and specific group of programmers that contributed to those results. Conclusions: We identified initial evidence to contribute for the understanding of the causes underlying the influence of the sentiments of the developers in the context of releases of open source software projects.</p>

<p>The software has become one of the main assets to deliver services today. Thus, software delivery has been dealing with a competitive and dynamic environment where the demand for faster and more assertive deliverables, called here Releases, only increases. Agile development methods emerged helping to accelerate software delivery, embracing industry and open source community. Since then, the software delivery frequency has expanded and improved bringing more adopters of rapid release cycles to reduce their time-to-market. However, using only rapid releases can not be enough as measuring software delivery can answer essential questions, like how software delivery is happening and how it should be. Some approaches for measuring software delivery appeared such as Software Delivery Performance (SDP) where software delivery is measured as a consequence of capabilities evolution. Popularity in Open Source Software Projects (OSSP) means that a project is mature enough in the community to fit the software demand and, therefore, is likely to be ready to be measured through a software delivery approach like SDP. In light of it, this work offers means to analyze SDP behavior in popular Open Source Software Projects on a Release timeline basis through delivery metrics. The results demonstrated that popularity is efficient filtering, as it improves the OSSP delivery, supporting the work's reliability and accuracy. The source code and methodology are published as a replication package to encourage reproducibility and future research.</p> <p> </p>

Kapitsaki, Maria Papoutsoglou, Daniel German and Lefteris Angelis, What do developers talk about open source software licensing?, to appear in the Proceedings of the Euromicro Conference on <a href="https://dsd-seaa2020.um.si/seaa/index.html">Software Engineering and Advanced Applications</a>, SEAA 2020.</p> <p>Free and open source software has gained a lot of momentum in the industry and the research community. Open source<br> licenses determine the rules, under which the open source software can be further used and distributed. Previous works<br> have examined the usage of open source licenses in the framework of specific projects or online social coding platforms, examining developers specific licensing views for specific software. However, the questions practitioners ask about licenses and licensing as captured in Question and Answer websites also constitute an important aspect toward understanding practitioners general licenses and licensing concerns. In this paper, we investigate open source license discussions using data from the Software Engineering, Open Source and Law Stack Exchange sites that contain relevant data. We describe the process used for the data collection and analysis, and discuss the main results. Our results indicate that clarifications about specific licenses and specific license terms are required. The results can be useful for developers, educators and license authors.</p>
