VG1 SAT PLS DERIVED ION MAGNETOSHEATH 96SEC V1.0

This data set contains Voyager 1 plasma fit data from Saturn's magnetosphere. The fit parameters assume a convected isotropic proton Maxwellian distribution. Use of fit parameters is recommended as these are normally more accurate. Since only the first 72 or last 72 energy/charge channels are telemetered to Earth from each M-mode spectra, derived parameters change significantly only every other set of spectra so the effective time resolution is 96 second.

VG2 NEP PLS DERIVED RDR ION INBOUND S-WIND 48SEC V1.0

This data set gives the best available values for ion densities, temperatures, and velocities near Neptune derived from data obtained by the Voyager 2 plasma experiment. All parameters are obtained by fitting the observed spectra (current as a function of energy) with Maxwellian plasma distributions, using a non-linear least squares fitting routine to find the plasma parameters which, when coupled with the full instrument response, best simulate the data.

VG2 NEP PLS DERIVED RDR ION OUTBND MAGSHTH L-MODE 48SEC V1.0

This data set gives the best available values for ion densities, temperatures, and velocities near Neptune derived from data obtained by the Voyager 2 plasma experiment. All parameters are obtained by fitting the observed spectra (current as a function of energy) with Maxwellian plasma distributions, using a non-linear least squares fitting routine to find the plasma parameters which, when coupled with the full instrument response, best simulate the data. The PLS instrument measures energy/charge, so composition is not uniquely determined but can be deduced in some cases by the separation of the observed current peaks in energy (assuming the plasma is co-moving).

Voyager 1 Plasma Spectrometer (PLS) VIPER-Fit Plasma Ion Composition near Jupiter, 96 s Data

These Data are from a Re-Analysis of the Voyager Plasma Spectrometer, PLS, Data at Jupiter by the PLS Group at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, LASP, at the University of Colorado. Density, Temperature, and Flow Velocity Fits for total and individual Ions were done using the Voyager Ion PLS Experiment Response, VIPER, Code and Error Analysis as described at http://lasp.colorado.edu/home.mop/missions/voyager/viper/. Fits are determined from processing of the Ion Currents from the A, B, C, and D Cups of the Instrument. As per the Fit Case Variable, one of five different Constraints were used in the VIPER Fits for each 96 s Time Interval: (1) Free Variation of all Parameters (mainly for the cold Ion Torus), (2) Constraint of the Ion Abundances for the five major Species (O+, O++, S+, S++, S+++) to standard Composition as determined from Delamere et al., (2005), (3) fixed Ion Composition and Flow Speed, (4) Cold Blobs in the Plasmasheet where resolved Peaks can be Fit with allowance for some Variance in Composition, (5) Interpolation between Composition of Cold Torus and standard Abundances at 6 RJ from Delamere et al., (2005). VG2 JUP PLS DERIVED ION OUTBND MAGSHTH M-MODE 96SEC V1.0

This data set contains plasma parameters from Voyager 2 outbound from Jupiter from the magnetotail through the solar wind. Fit and moment parameters are given; the fit parameters assume a single, isotropic convected proton Maxwellian distribution. Although magnetotail data is provided, these data are unreliable; the density can be used as an upper limit to the actual density. Solar wind data are also provided and are reliable. These M mode data are the best data to use in most regions of the magnetosheath. Magnetotail data in this data set are included mainly to put the sheath data in context and show magnetopause.

VG2 JUP PLS DERIVED ION IN/OUTBND MAGSHTH L-MODE 96SEC V1.0

This data set contains plasma parameters from the Voyager 2 inbound magnetosheath and outbound data from the magnetotail through the solar wind. Inbound Voyager 2 passed near noon local time, so it sampled regions of the magnetosheath where flow is generally subsonic. Distribution functions observed were well represented by two convected isotropic proton Maxwellians, so this type of distribution was used to derive the proton velocity, density and temperature. Physically the two populations represent the thermal plasma accelerated at the shock (the colder component) and ions reflected once at the shock before entering the magnetosheath (the hotter component). The PLS experiment could not resolve alpha particles in this region so no alpha parameters are provided; the neglect of alpha made cause an overestimate of the hot proton component of the plasma. One sigma errors are provided for the fit parameters.
