When fear meets anger: Attitudes toward positively versus negatively evaluated pandemic policy proposals when negative emotions are competing in society

<p>Since the outbreak of the COVID‐19 pandemic, citizens of many countries have been faced with health‐related fear, as well as anti‐establishment and anti‐governmental anger. This emotional landscape colored the ongoing efforts by the authorities to convince citizens to accept various public policy proposals. In two studies (total&nbsp;<em>N</em> = 528, one preregistered) conducted in Poland in two different situations, we focused on the role of the simultaneously evoked pandemic fear and anti‐government anger in shaping attitudes toward the pandemic regulations. For negatively evaluated proposals, both of these emotions worked in opposite directions: fear was associated with increasing support, while anger was associated with increasing rejection. However, for positively evaluated policy proposals, fear and anger worked in consonance, and both were associated with increasing acceptance of the proposed regulations. Thus, while fear seems to motivate the acceptance of even negatively evaluated proposals that are seen as protective ones, anger works to amplify or polarize the proposals&rsquo; basic evaluations. Our findings could help plan the implementation of public policies in societies in times of turbulent emotional landscapes.</p>

Research Survey on 'Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Scientific Research'

<p><strong>1. The aim of the research</strong></p><p>The survey aimed to collect opinions on how the pandemic has changed scientific research, especially in regards to the usage of different forms of digital tools. The onset of COVID-19 has had an immediate impact on how scientists were able to use their time and resources to do their work. However, there was a lack of real-time data on how they are responding to this event and how it has had differential impacts across scientific fields.</p><p><strong>2. Research instrument and subject</strong></p><p>A survey questionnaire prepared in English was developed for collecting empirical data from academics in Poland and abroad. We used the same version of the survey questionnaire both in Poland and in other countries in the world. The survey questionnaire consisted of several parts. Its first part included questions on demographic information. The second part of the survey questionnaire contained questions about how respondents' work hours were allocated for different activities during, and after the coronavirus pandemic outbreak and the predicted changes in future publication and funding related to spending on researching, writing during and after the coronavirus pandemic. The last part of the survey questionnaire included questions about scientific works, their quality, and support by ICTs during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the implications of the pandemic for these issues in the future. At the end of the survey questionnaire, we asked respondents about their opinions with regard to the forecast situation in research and education after the coronavirus pandemic. Selecting a sample is a fundamental element of a quantitative study. Stratified sampling was used to obtain the sample, which can be taken to be true for the whole population. The strata were identified based on country, age, gender, position type, and research discipline. To gather a substantial number of respondents, snowball sampling was pursued, which involved daily and routine distribution (social media and e-mail posting) of an introductory e-letter and survey-link requesting participation in the research. To increase response rates, the following methods were used: involving academics (encouraging colleagues), pushing the survey (providing respondents with the survey URL in e-mails sent directly to them), publishing the project with a link for the basic questionnaire on the ResearchGate website and Facebook fan pages and providing frequent reminders.1</p><p><strong>3. Data collection</strong></p><p>Based on several analyses showing that surveys conducted over the internet provide results that are as valid as more "traditional" methods and due to social distancing caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we used the Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) method for recruiting respondents and collecting data. The LimeSurvey tool was employed for recruiting reliable samples. The data were collected during a two-month period of work, between June 11, 2020, and August 18, 2020. This led to 982 responses. After screening the responses and excluding outliers, 476 usable, correct, and complete responses were collected. This uploded dataset is a subset of a larger dataset that the authors collected for their research project titled "The Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Scientific Research and University Teaching". It includes the questionnaire responses related to research during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The questions were designed to gather information about the impact of the pandemic on academic scientists' research.1</p><p><strong>4. Results</strong></p><p>Our results may suggest targeted policies to alleviate the disruptions experienced by specific scientific fields. &nbsp;The findings of the past research were documented in three articles, which can be found below:&nbsp;</p><p>1. Replication Package of Understanding Developers Well-Being and Productivity: a 2-year Longitudinal Analysis during the COVID-19 Pandemic

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant and enduring shifts in various aspects of life, including increased flexibility in work arrangements. In a longitudinal study, spanning 24 months with six measurement points from April 2020 to April 2022, we explore changes in well-being, productivity, social contacts, and needs of software engineers during this time. Our findings indicate systematic changes in various variables. For example, well-being and quality of social contacts increased while emotional loneliness decreased as lockdown measures were relaxed. Conversely, people&#39;s boredom and productivity, remained stable. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation into the future of work at the end of the pandemic revealed a consensus among developers for a preference of hybrid work arrangements. We also discovered that prior job changes and low job satisfaction were consistently linked to intentions to change jobs if current work conditions do not meet developers&#39; needs. This highlights the need for software organizations to adapt to various work arrangements to remain competitive employers. Building upon our findings and the existing literature, we introduce the Integrated Job Demands-Resources and Self-Determination (IJARS) Model as a comprehensive framework to explain the well-being and productivity of software engineers during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

Data from: Maps made with smartphones highlight lower noise pollution during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown at four locations in Boston

<p>Noise pollution in cities has major negative effects on the health of both humans and wildlife. Using iPhones, we collected sound-level data at hundreds of locations in four areas of Boston, Massachusetts (USA) before, during, and after the fall 2020 pandemic lockdown, during which most people were required to remain at home. These spatially dispersed measurements allowed us to make detailed maps of noise pollution that are not possible when using standard fixed sound equipment. The four sites were: the Boston University campus (which sits between two highways), the Fenway/Longwood area (which includes an urban park and several hospitals), Harvard Square (home of Harvard University), and East Boston (a residential area near Logan Airport). Across all four sites, sound levels averaged 6.4 dB lower during the pandemic lockdown than after. Fewer high noise measurements occurred during lockdown as well. The resulting sound maps highlight noisy locations such as traffic intersections and quiet locations such as parks. This project demonstrates that changes in human activity can reduce noise pollution and that simple smartphone technology can be used to make highly detailed maps of noise pollution that identify sources of high sound levels potentially harmful to humans in urban environments.</p>

Viral Communication: Longitudinal Survey Data on the Social Dimensions of the COVID-19 Pandemic

<p>This dataset represents the anonymised data collected as part of the Viral Communication (Understand-ELSED) project, which focussed on the social and ethical dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. It includes the three measurements; Phase I (30 October 2020 and 14 December 2020), Phase II (2 March 2021 and 22 March 2021) and Phase III.</p> <p>The first phase built the foundation for the wider suite of data collection approaches and research methods used in the Viral Communication project by allowing respondents to opt-in to multiple research pathways.</p> <p>Overall sample frame (Phase I): <em>N </em>= 1480</p> <p>Phase II sample frame: <em>N </em>= 482</p> <p>Phase III sample frame: <em>N </em>= 426</p> <p>Computed variables such as weights, groupings (experimental set-ups), and composite scores are included in the dataset.</p>

Data for the Community Pandemic Accounts Project

<p>On March 10, the first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in Michigan. Since then, there have been many changes to everyday life, such as the &quot;Stay Home, Stay Safe&quot; executive order urging Michiganders to limit contact with others. The Western Michigan University Libraries conducted a data collection/history project that serves to understand how our regional community has been coping and adapting to these changes. The University community&rsquo;s personal memories and experiences will provide a more nuanced view into these unprecedented times, while basic demographics will serve to contextualize their experiences. Collected accounts are primarily disseminated as a publicly available de-identified dataset for researchers to better understand pandemic impacts during this time period, and as a historical artifact through the Zhang Archive in 2025 that connects names to accounts.</p> <p>This dataset contains two files, a deidentified csv and a plain text README file with variable descriptions.</p>

The impact of stress and its influencing factors among dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kingdom of Bahrain

<p><strong><span>Background:</span></strong><span> It is well known that all medical professions are linked to work stress, including dentistry, which is seen as facing higher risk due to the nature of the job, especially the working conditions. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Objective:</strong> This study aimed to assess the impact of stress and its influencing factors among dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bahrain.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span><strong>:</strong> A cross-sectional survey was designed to assess the impact of stress and its influencing factors among Bahraini dentists. A total of 306 participants were randomly selected from 1489 registered professionals in the NHRA (National Health Regulatory Authority Bahrain). In addition, an online survey was used to minimise face-to-face communication as well as to accommodate dental practitioners who work in private and government hospitals in Bahrain and a convenient sample of dentists was requested to participate in this study.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span><strong>:</strong> Out of 306 participants invited in the survey, only 253 responded, which was adequate for the study. Overall, the participants have reported moderate stress. All the variables of the study showed different effects, but the highest stressor with a strong correlation was "fear of social isolation "(FI) at the significance level of 0.01 (β= 0.393, t= 5.090, p &lt; 0.05= (0.000) with </span> <span>= 0.201 above 0.15 and less than 0.35 which was considered as a moderate effect size approximately (20%), which strongly supported the hypothesis that researchers have proposed. Overall, the total effect for all stressors were (30 %) which was considered as a moderate effect size. All hypotheses were supported except BCP -&gt; OUTCOME due to insufficient evidence at the insignificant level of 0.01 (β= -0.184, t=1.560, p &gt; 0.05 = (0.060). whereas the R² values of independent variables were above 95% for the variance of dentists' outcome, which is considered an excellent fit to the data as evidenced by the squared multiple correlations (</span> <span>) values for the dependent variables.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions:</strong> </span><span>The study is unique based on its findings that reveal the impact of stress among dentists. Moreover, the results of this study may serve as guidance for future monitoring of dental practitioners' burnout, anxiety, and workload. Furthermore, it may provide supports in different aspects.</span></p>

Household Survey in Nairobi (Kibera & Eastleigh) for the "Urban Waterscapes and the Pandemic" research project

<p><strong>&quot;Urban Waterscapes and the Pandemic&quot; research project:</strong> The Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the fore the importance of water access as an essential service protecting human health. Yet, the prevention of human-to-human transmission of the novel virus may be impacted by uneven geographies of water access. The pandemic presented a dilemma in water-deprived urban areas as residents needed to find ways to adapt to new hygiene standards and local Covid-19 responses. Focusing on Nairobi, Kenya&rsquo;s capital with historically uneven and highly contested geographies of water, we mobilized the concept of waterscapes in order to understand how Nairobi&rsquo;s waterscapes have changed during the pandemic; how these waterscape changes relate to new requirements; and how far they reflect adaptive creativity or re-produce urban fragmentation. Funded by DFG, the project is a 12-month-long collaboration between IPS, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Nairobi, and the British Institute for Eastern Africa.</p> <p><strong>Household survey in Kibera and Eastleigh:</strong> As part of the &quot;Urban Waterscapes and the Pandemic&quot; research project, the project team conducted a household survey in two target areas of Nairobi, namely Kibera and Eastleigh. The survey was conducted in April and May 2022 with the support of 11 enumerators. Spread purposefully over four sub-locations in each target area, the survey included more than 400 respondents per area. The final data set has been quality-checked and cleaned for further analysis;&nbsp; personal details about the respondents and the enumerators that may reveal their identity have been removed.</p>
