Rapa Nui fue poblada por navegantes polinésicos alrededor del año 1200 de nuestra era, desarrollando una sociedad que es ampliamente conocida por sus grandes obras monumentales en piedra conocidas como "moai". Más allá de su excepcional trabajo en piedra, los Rapa Nui crearon una serie de figuras talladas en madera, entre las que destacan seres humanos, remos ceremoniales, peces, tortugas marinas y caracoles como este.
