Transgenerational effect on sexual reproduction in rotifer populations in relation to the environmental predictability of their habitats
<p>Understanding the processes that enable adaptation of organisms to time-varying environments is critically relevant in evolutionary ecology. A way to cope with environmental fluctuations where predictable conditions affect several generations of individuals is through non-genetic transgenerational effects. The phenotype of ancestors affects the phenotype of their descendants matching it with the expected environment of the latter. Facultatively sexual rotifers inhabiting water bodies that cover a wide gradient of environmental predictability in Eastern Spain are a good study model for this topic. In their life cycle sex is linked to diapausing-egg production that enables survival between growing seasons. In several rotifer species, sexual reproduction is inhibited in several generations after diapausing-egg hatching. We hypothesized that in ponds where the growing season length is more predictable, rotifer clones proliferate asexually longer, hence allowing a fuller exploitation of the growing season and therefore maximize diapausing-egg production by the end of the season. We tested this prediction by estimating the proportion of sexual females produced by eight clones of the rotifer <em>Brachionus plicatilis</em> inhabiting eight ponds (8x8= 64 clones) from our study system. Here, we present the raw data gathered from the experiment. </p>

Most rotifer species have positive responses in abundance caused by the increase in nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll-a in reservoirs using TITAN analysis
<p>Some zooplanktonic species change their abundances according to the primary productivity increases in freshwater lentic environments. Here, we aimed to i) evaluate the concentration threshold of variables related to eutrophication (nitrogen, phosphorus<br> and chlorophyll-a concentrations) that alter the frequency of occurrence and relative abundance of rotifer species, and ii) analyze which Rotifera species are related positively or negatively to the increase in these variables. The rotifer community<br> structure was studied in fifteen reservoirs in La Plata River Basin, the second largest in South America, relating its abundance with nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll-a values using the Threshold Indicator Rate Analysis (TITAN). Seventy-one rotifer<br> species were registered in the reservoirs, and six species were considered as indicators of changes in their frequency of occurrence and relative abundance with points of change of 1.118 µg.L -1 , 22.44 µg.L -1 and 3.89 µg.L -1 of the nitrogen, phosphorus and<br> chlorophyll-a concentrations, respectively. Species with positive responses to the increase in nutrients were Keratella tropica, Plationus patulus, Filinia terminalis and Synchaeta oblonga, and negative responses Conochilus unicornis and Synchaeta stylata,<br> typical of oligotrophic reservoirs. The only species that presented the same response for all variable concentrations was Keratella tropica, which is a very common species in South America. Our results reinforce the assumption that some rotifer species are good<br> indicators to the variables related to the trophic level in reservoirs. Ineffective integration of multiple antipredator defences in a rotifer: a low-cost insurance?
<p><span>To maximize survival, prey often integrates multiple anti-predator defenses. How the defenses interact to reduce predation risk is, however, poorly known. We used the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to investigate how morphological (spines) and behavioral (floating) defenses are integrated against a common predatory rotifer, Asplanchna brightwellii, and if their combined use improves survival. To this end, we assessed the cost of the behavioral defense and the efficiency of both defenses, individually and combined, as well as their mutual dependency. The results show that </span><span>the behavioral defense is costly in reducing foraging activity, and that the two defenses are used simultaneously, with the presence of the morphological defense enhancing the use of the behavioral defense, as does</span><span> the pre-exposure to predator cues</span><span>. However, while t</span><span>he morphological defense reduces predation risk, the behavioral defense does not, thus, adding the costly behavioral defense to the morphological defense does not improve survival. It is likely that the cost of the behavioral defense is low given its reversibility – compared to the cost of misidentifying the predator species – and that this has promoted the adoption of both defenses, as general low-cost insurance rather than as a tailored strategy toward specific predators. Thus, the optimal strategy in the rotifer appears to be to express both morphological and behavioral defenses when confronted with the cues of a potential predator.</span></p>
