BRAIN Journal-Novel Detection Features for SSVEP Based BCI: Coefficient of Variation and Variation Speed-Figure 4: Visual stimuli
<p>In order to test the developed features, the SSVEP datasets recorded in (Nakanishi et al. 2014) is used. Flickering boxes had been presented on 24-inch LCD monitor with a refresh rate of 75Hz. 32 visual stimuli had been generated with 8 different frequencies (8 Hz, 9 Hz, …, 15 Hz) and 4 different phases (0<sup>o </sup>, 90<sup>o</sup> , 180<sup>o</sup> , 270<sup>o</sup> ) as shown in Figure 4. Thirteen healthy adults had participated in the experiments. EEG data had been recorded by 16 electrodes (FPz, F3, F4, Fz, C<sub>z</sub>, P1, P2, P<sub>z</sub>, PO3, PO4, PO7, PO8, PO<sub>z</sub>, O1, O2 and Oz). The sampling rate had been 512 Hz. The datasets are grouped into 4 groups. The 0-degree stimuli formed the 1st group, the 90- degree stimuli the 2<sup>nd</sup> group, the 180-degree stimuli the 3<sup>rd</sup> group and the 270-degree stimuli the 4<sup>th</sup> group. Thus, it is made possible to test the developed features in more datasets. </p>
Stimuli examples for Object-based attention in complex, naturalistic auditory streams
<p>This is an example collection of stimuli used to study Object-based attention in complex, naturalistic auditory streams. The stimuli consist of single auditory streams of speech signals and environmental sounds signals that can contain a repetition of 750ms (starting name "target")or not (starting name "clean"). Two sounds stimuli, one with repetition and one without were randomly overlapped to form an auditory scene of two speech streams (starting name "sceneSS") or one speech and one environmental stream (starting name "sceneSE"). </p>
Visual stimuli used in fMRI study on top-down feedback across cortical depths
<p>These videos contain samples of visual stimuli used in an fMRI study on top-down feedback across cortical depths in human early visual cortex [in preparation]. There is one video sample for each of the three experimental conditions in the main experiment: ‘Pac-Man dynamic’, ‘Pac-Man static’, and ‘control dynamic’. In addition, there are videos of stimuli used in a control experiment in which the shape of the stimulus (‘Pac-Man’ or square) and the background (texture or uniform) was varied. Please note that these videos are short sample segments from the experiment, and that in the actual experiment the rest blocks surrounding the stimulus presentations were much longer. Sound improves neuronal encoding of visual stimuli in mouse primary visual cortex
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>In everyday life, we integrate visual and auditory information in routine tasks such as navigation and communication. While concurrent sound can improve visual perception, the neuronal <span>correlates of audiovisual integration are not fully understood. Specifically, it remains unclear whether neuronal firing patters in the primary visual cortex (V1) of awake animals demonstrate similar sound-induced improvement in visual discriminability. Furthermore, presentation of sound is associated with movement in the subjects, but little is understood about whether and how sound-associated movement affects audiovisual integration in V1. Here, we investigated how sound and movement interact </span>to modulate V1 visual responses in awake, head-fixed mice and whether this interaction improves neuronal encoding of the visual stimulus. We presented visual drifting gratings with and without simultaneous auditory white noise to awake mice while recording mouse movement and V1 neuronal activity. Sound modulated activity of 80% of light-responsive neurons, with 95% of neurons increasing activity when the auditory stimulus was present. A generalized linear model revealed that sound and movement had distinct and complementary effects of the neuronal visual responses. Furthermore, decoding of the visual stimulus from the neuronal activity was improved with sound, an effect that persisted even when controlling for movement. These results demonstrate that sound and movement modulate visual responses in complementary ways, improving neuronal representation of the visual stimulus. This study clarifies the role of movement as a potential confound in neuronal audiovisual responses and expands our knowledge of how multimodal processing is mediated at a neuronal level in the awake brain.</span></p> <p></p>
Sound stimuli: Considerations for the perceptual evaluation of steady-state and time-varying sounds using psychoacoustic metrics
<p>The current dataset provides all the sound stimuli (wav files) to recreate the figures from the study with the title "Considerations for the perceptual evaluation of steady-state and time-varying sounds using psychoacoustic metrics" by the same authors. There are three datasets: <strong>dataset 1</strong> for fly-by aircraft sounds (directory <em>1-Aircraft-fly-by</em>), <strong>dataset 2</strong> for pass-by train sounds (directory <em>2-Train-pass-by</em>), and <strong>dataset 3</strong> for sounds from a resonating tube called hummer (directory <em>3-Hummer-resonances</em>). A brief description of the datasets is included. The reproduction of figures requires the installation of the sound quality analysis toolbox (SQAT) for MATLAB.</p> <p><strong>Use these data</strong>:<br> Download all these data, locate them in a local directory of your computer. If you have MATLAB and you downloaded a local copy of the <strong>SQAT toolbox</strong> (open access at: <a href="https://github.com/ggrecow/SQAT">https://github.com/ggrecow/SQAT</a>) you can recreate the figures of our paper. After downloading and initialising the toolbox (type 'startup_SQAT;', without quotation marks in MATLAB), run the script <strong>copy_sounds_for_pub_Osses2023c_to_SQAT.m</strong>. This last step is not required but recommended. Subsequently, you can run the toolbox script pub_Osses2023c_Forum_Acusticum_SQAT.m and follow the instructions on screen.</p>

This dataset contains all information required to recreate figures from the paper. </p>
EEG recordings comprising evoked potentials related to attention to colored laminar stimuli
<p>Here we provide EEG (electroencephalogram) data recorded during BCI (brain-computer interface) control. The BCI was intended for the decoding of binary decisions from a series of colored laminar stimuli. The decoding task is to determine to which of the simultaneously presented items the participant shifted his/her attention. By determining the visual field a subject's attention was shifted to, the intended target color can be determined.<br> 14 participants were presented with 144 sequences of ten visual stimuli in which a red and a green surface was simultaneously illuminated in opposite visual hemifields. Participants associated the green stimulus with the word "yes" and the red with the word "no" while responding to the question whether an auditorily presented number was even or not. They communicated their response only by directing their attention to the respective surface, while fixating their visual gaze on a cross in the center of the stimulus device. The online decoded response was presented as feedback auditorily by a female voice saying the words "yes" or "no".</p>
GENEA Challenge 2023 user-study video stimuli
<p>This Zenodo repository contains video stimuli in mp4 format from the user studies in the GENEA Challenge 2023.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Contents:</strong></p> <p>The file "monadic_videos.zip" contains the video stimuli used in the monadic evaluations of the challenge (human-likeness and speech appropriateness) and the file "dyadic_videos.zip" the video stimuli from the dyadic evaluation (appropriateness for the interlocutor).</p> <p>Video stimuli with mismatched motion are in the corresponding subfolders with the prefix "mismat_".</p> <p>The file "attention_check_examples.zip" contains examples of the attention-check videos used in the challenge.</p> <p> </p> <p>The release contains all videos used for the challenge evaluation, except for the attention-checks, where only a few examples are provided. Except for the attention-check examples for the human-likeness studies, all videos contain speech audio. A Prosthetic Hand with Integrated Sensing Elements for Selective Detection of Mechanical and Thermal Stimuli
<p>Flexible electronics have gained popularity because of their capability to combine softness and functionality. Soft resistive sensors are susceptible to mechanical stimuli and detecting temperature selectively remains a challenge. In this study, soft flexible thermistors are developed for detecting temperature changes based on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, selectively. By thermomechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, it is observed that thermoplastic elastomers with higher thermal expansion and semicrystalline morphology result in a sensitive thermistor response. To achieve a high sensitivity in temperature and low sensitivity in the detection of mechanical stimulus, a low-carbon filler content is required. The opposite trend is seen for the piezoresistive sensors for mechanical strain detection. Both sensory material types are compatible with thermoplastic material extrusion-based additive manufacturing. The method is used for the fabrication of the sensing elements and an open-source prosthetic hand. The strain sensor detects the bending of the fingers and the temperature sensor detects the temperature when in contact with a heated surface, successfully. In addition, the temperature sensor is used as a tactile sensor to detect contact with a non-heated surface. Combining selective multisensory capabilities will significantly affect the future development of sensorized prosthetic devices and wearable electronics.</p>
