Data from: Generic and specific facets of vulnerability for analyzing trade-offs and synergies in natural resource management

<p>1. The concept of vulnerability as the combination of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity to a stressor is gaining traction outside of the climate realm, opening new avenues to address contemporary sustainability issues more holistically. Yet, critical notions that underpin vulnerability have yet to be integrated into its application to natural resource management and non-climatic stressors. In particular, the way generic and stressor-specific facets of vulnerability interact and can inform decision-makers about how interventions combine and/or trade-off remains unexplored.</p> <p>2. Here, we investigate the salience of the generic/specific framing in the context of Chilean artisanal fishing communities engaged in rights-based co-management and experiencing pressures from two stressors: poaching and market volatility. Specifically, we draw on market data combined with socioeconomic surveys conducted with 446 members and leaders from 42 fisher unions to quantitatively investigate potential trade-offs and synergies between facets of vulnerability to poaching and markets.</p> <p>3. Generic adaptive capacity (i.e. flexibility, assets, learning, organization and agency) likely facilitated stressor-specific adaptive capacities to both stressors. High levels of specific adaptive capacity to one stressor neither increased exposure nor undermined specific adaptive capacity to the other stressor. However, adaptive capacity did not translate into exposure reduction as expected, suggesting that adaptation barriers may prevent fishers from mobilizing adaptive capacity into effective adaptive action.</p> <p>4. This study illustrates how breaking down vulnerability into generic and specific facets can help us better anticipate important trade-offs and synergies in management interventions. More generally, it highlights the potential of the climate adaptation and vulnerability literatures in informing place-based management of natural resources.</p>

The synergy of intrinsic ecological mechanisms of leaf nutrient resorption in temperate deciduous trees

<p>Nutrient resorption is a critical process in plant nutrient conservation during leaf senescence. However, the underlying ecological mechanisms on the large variabilities in nitrogen (NRE) and phosphorous (PRE) resorption efficiencies remain poorly understood. We conducted a comprehensive study on NRE and PRE variability using 61 tree individuals of 10 temperate broadleaved tree species. Three potentially interrelated intrinsic ecological mechanisms (i.e., leaf pigments, energy residual and leaf senescence phenology) were verified. We found that delayed leaf senescence date, increased degradation of chlorophyll and carotenoids, biosynthesis of anthocyanins, and reduced nonstructural carbohydrates (particular sugars) coordinately and positively related with NRE and PRE. The intrinsic factors affecting the resorption efficiency were ranked in a decreasing order: leaf pigments &gt; energy residual &gt; senescence phenology. Our findings underscore the synergistic effect of the three ecological mechanisms on leaf nutrient resorption, and hold significant implications for comprehending how nutrient resorption responds to climate change.</p>

The best of both worlds: highlighting the synergies of combining knowledge modelling and automated techniques to improve information search and discovery in oil and gas exploration

<p><span>Research suggests organizations across all sectors waste a significant amount of time looking for information and often fail to leverage the information they have. In response, many organizations have deployed some form of enterprise search to improve the &lsquo;findability&rsquo; of information. Debates persist as to whether thesauri and manual indexing or automated machine learning techniques should be used to enhance discovery of information. In addition, the extent to which a Knowledge Organization System (KOS) enhances discoveries or indeed blinds us to new ones remains a moot point. The oil and gas industry is used as a case study using a representative organization. Drawing on prior research, a theoretical model is presented which aims to overcome the shortcomings of each approach. This synergistic model could help to re-conceptualize the &lsquo;manual&rsquo; versus &lsquo;automatic&rsquo; debate in many enterprises, accommodating a broader range of information needs. This may enable enterprises to develop more effective information and knowledge management strategies and ease the tension between what are often perceived as mutually exclusive competing approaches. Certain aspects of the theoretical model may be transferable to other industries, which is an area for further research.</span></p>

Une &eacute;tude approfondie a &eacute;t&eacute; r&eacute;alis&eacute;e &agrave; partir d'entretiens semi-structur&eacute;s avec des enseignants et des administrateurs utilisant la plateforme digitale .
